With Each Step We Come Closer Disruption is a film by Kelly Nyks and Jared F. Scott (2014). It is based on the march that happened in New York City on September 21, 2014 on climate change. This was one of the largest rallies for climate control held. During the film one will hear from people of different statuses from President Bush, to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, to scientist, college professors, authors, founders of groups, leaders, community organizers, and people from different countries on how climate changes throughout the years have affected the world we live in today. To establish the film’s credibility, it presents different viewpoints from scientist on how the climate is deteriorating. For over 150 years scientist had known …show more content…
Berlin, Germany IPCC present reports it wants to only bring about limitation of temperature increase to no more than 2 degrees Celsius. The need of International Corporation is needed. The IPCC drew a red line in the sand which tied that 2 degree Celsius to the amount of the fossil fuels we can burn. Which was a trillion tons of carbon. Scientist stated (Disruption, 2014), “We are more than halfway there, and we are already approaching 600,000,000,000 million tons already. With that rate, we will completely use the carbon budget within 30 years.” What the Policy making community did was make a dangerous humane interference. In 2009, they agreed on a target of 2 degree Celsius of max warning. That would require emissions worldwide stopping within a matter of decades. As one scientist stated (Disruption, 2014) “That 2 degrees is not a safe level. It still would have substation climate impact.” With having 1 degrees melting the Arctic and Antarctic it would be crazy to find out what 2 degrees would do. The same leaders that did not want the temperatures to go up 2 degrees, put together a series of proposals, when you add them up the temp will raise 6 degree. Most scientist think if it goes past that civilization will not be possible. Some scientist feel we need to leave 80% of fossil fuel in the ground. The fossil fuel industry wants to burn all the reserves and if that happens that is where we got the 6 degrees. Scientist are screaming if we go over the 2 degree mark that climate change could spin out of control we could trigger our tipping
Lindzen begins his piece by asserting that there isn't, and never will be, static, unchanging climates on planets with fluid envelopes. Throughout this article, he ponders why there has been an increase in alarm over climate change in the past few years. At the beginning of the article, he states that the increase in alarm is because the public has become scientifically illiterate, which, in turn, makes them more susceptible to being taken advantage of by people of higher status. He continues on by saying that the panic over climate change is falsely placed and that the climate is and has constantly been changing over time. He gives supportive examples of this through climate changing events that have occurred throughout the centuries. Also, according to Lindzen, findings on climate change are problematic because they are based on computer models. He claims that the data conflicts with the models, and that scientists “correct” the data to agree with the models, which points to some level of corruption in climate science. Although Lindzen does give reasons that he believes climate change may be over exaggerated, he keeps going back to another reason. Throughout the article, he ind...
An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary film in which basis are put long-term researches of changes of climate, level of carbonic gas in the atmosphere, and conditions of polar ices. In this film, El Gore, a presidential candidate of 2000 and former vice president of the United States, explains the scientific and political view of global warming and its serious consequences that we already observe on Earth, and other more tragic consequences that are still to come in the near future if we do not reduce emissions of exhaust gas in the atmosphere. Nothing especially new about the global warning is presented in the film, but what made this film effective is, firs of all, the fact that El Gore, a public and well known figure in the United States, is the main protagonist of the film. Another effective point in the film is that El Gore put all the scientific work together and showed that the problem is real, it is not a myth, and it should not be ignored any longer.
The Interrupters is a 2011 film directed by Steve James that speaks volume on inner city violence. This film accurately portrays urban life and issues that arise from it. With brilliant cinematography, this film describes social problems, social norms, and inner city culture and demonstrates it through a strategically written and shot film. The Interrupters was informative, eye opening, touching, and relevant to today’s time. This is true because there is perhaps an even larger violence epidemic in the United States than when the film came out.
Time and language are both basic constructs for society. Individuals depend on the existence of time to organize their lives and language to have the ability to communicate with those around them. Though the technicalities of time and language have changed over the years, they have, for the most part, remained the same conceptually. However, The Arrival, a science fiction movie released in 2016, took the philosophy behind time and language and altered it completely. The Arrival tells the story of Dr. Louise Banks, a professor of language, as she attempts to decipher the language of the aliens. In doing so, her perceptions of time are completely changed, an experience which causes emotional
Health has always been one of the priorities of the American people. It is a broad topic that encompass the physical, spiritual, and mental health. This research covers the physical health that includes food and exercise. Numerous films provide and inform Americans to look and be healthy, although many have tried, some succeeded and others do not. One such film that provide and inform the American public of health is a documentary titled, Fed Up by Stephanie Soechtig. The controversy in this film centers around the validity of the facts presented, and the claim that added sugar is the leading contributor to obesity. The documentary presented an examination of the rise in American obesity epidemic, the role of the food industry and their
In the article “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math”, written by Bill Mckibben, he firstly opens up by saying that back in 2012, according to the statistics, we surpassed the global record high for climate temperature in our nation, destroying other previous records. Despite the research and the displaying of data, nobody is doing anything to adress the following issue. Mckibben outlines three distinctive numbers that outline the following issue., 2 degrees celsius, 565 gigations, and 2795 gigtons, which he uses to validitate and support his argument. Firstly, the ongoing problem of climate change in society is fundamentally a matter of individual moral responsibility that is inspired by the insight individuals are intentionally harming the environment. Secondly there is yet to be an effective collective state response to the issue of global warming, despite approaching two full decades of ongoing and reoccuring negotiations and the very near universal participation by states in the UNFCCC. Thirdly, because this issue has been put on hold for longer than it was innitially expected, greenhouse gases are being emitted into our atmosphere, polluting our environment. The South-North issue and an ongoing debate comes into effect as all the greenhouse gases that are created and used in the Northern hemisphere are being emmited into the southern hemisphere. Hence, my thesis is; despite the fact that global warming and climate change has been an ongoing problem globally for years, humanity has failed to resolve thiis issue as it quickly begins to escalate.
In the movie there have been several arguments which project that human induced climate change is actually happening. Some of them are listed below:
These are conflict, poverty, instability, migration, unrest, collapse, capacity, and dependency. This film serves as a wakeup call to the audience because climate change is a very critical problem that people should address as soon as possible. It also explicitly shows that climate change is in fact in our midst and is not just a myth or a theory as some would say.
One of the most compelling and difficult environmental problems society is facing today is climate change. People do not realize how much the environment has changed for the worse in the last ten years, until they are told that the last two decades of the 20th century have been the hottest in the last 400 years, according to climate studies (Conserve Energy Future). Today the carbon dioxide levels have reached 396.81 parts per million (ppm). “Carbon dioxide (CO2) has also increased over the last 100 years-- from about 300 ppm to 370 ppm. Interestingly, the majority of these additions have occurred in the last 50 years, when temperature increases have been slowest” (geocraft). There are no known solutions yet to reverse these effects in the environment, however there are many things people can do to prevent it from increasing. By implementing a carbon tax the government can tax corporations on how much carbon they emit into the atmosphere. With the extra money from the tax, scientist can invest in alternative ways to reduce how much carbon is emitted. Reducing climate change is going to take years and so nothing is going to get fixed anytime soon, but meanwhile we can use that extra money to begin cleaning up the atmosphere. There are many ways to explain climate change, some say its due to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, others say it is the burning of the fossils fuels, some even say it’s the greenhouse gases. All of these sayings mean the exact same thing, no matter how one says it. I believe there are more convenient ways to solve climate change; and if the government would to implement a carbon tax on companies they will then be forced to re-evaluate all the carbon they emit to the environment and red...
Furthermore, this analysis must take place amidst serious gaps in the existing research and technology concerning the developing climatic conditions. For these reasons, global warming stands as one of the most daunting policy issues facing our world today. This is compounded by the debate over the very existence of climate change. While countless sources of empirical evidence testify to the very real presence of climate change the world over, considerable denial of the phenomenon still exists. The argument has been made that evidence of climate change is a gross overstatement, or in some cases, a complete fabrication.
To sum up, it is obvious that climate shift is actually happened. Human is considered to be the primary cause of the problem. Activities like burning fossil fuel and deforestation are upsetting the climate by interrupt the natural greenhouse gases balance. Global warming has a long term effects in our life. This is a serious concern that actions should be taken immediately before it is too late.
Climate change has become of the world’s major issue today. The earth’s climate is always changing in a very fast and also in different ways. Climate changes affect our lives psychologically, emotional and also physically. Climate change is defined as a long term change in the earth’s climate, especially a change due to the increase in the average atmospheric temperatures. Due to this change in temperature, a lot of changes has occurred in our environment, these changes include rising sea levels, flooding, melting of polar ice caps, hotter days, colder nights and heat waves. These climate changes plays an important role in shaping our natural ecosystem, our human economics and also the most important, it affects the human race. For
Al Gore also notices that the ten hottest years on record have occurred in the last 14 years. He gives many examples such as the massive heat wave in Europe, the dramatic high temperature in India and a lot of cities in America. The temperature increases are occupied in the whole world, not only the land but also the oceans. When the oceans get warmer, that causes stronger storms. In the last couple years, there are a lot of big hurricanes. These catastrophic disasters did a lot of damages. They lead to more flooding, heavy rain. However, they also lead to more drought. The spring comes earlier and the fall comes later, the temperature keeps on going up. Many explorers found that the ice is less thick than before. Mr. Al Gore uses a lot of scientific and geographic knowledge to explain the cause and the consequence about the global warming. Ecological environment has been influenced and many rare animals are endangered. Many mosquitos change their habitats and expand their range owning to the change of temperature. Also, it causes a lot of vectors for infectious diseases. It is often said that human should save water and water is a necessary. However, most people never notice that many droughts were caused by global warming. The explanation in the movie is very convince and persuasive. When I was a senior high school student, our geography teacher told us global warming not only makes the temperature high, but also makes many potential dangers. As I was a child, there is a catastrophic disease named SARS, my mother told me that the disease was very serious and led a lot of people to die. If we have to go out, we should be well-armed. We need to use masks to keep us from the virus. From this case, SARS is a disaster and from this movie, global warming is also a
I have watched a documentary called “The Truth About Climate Change” which provide great information and evidence about the facts and consequences of climate change. “The Truth About Climate Change” is talking about the effect, fact and solution to the climate change. It is produced by the BBC, which is a famous television channel all over the world. The documentary takes part everywhere, such as the Arctic region, Amazon rainforest or the desert in China. “The Truth About Climate Change” provides very powerful argument and data to persuade the audience about how the climate change affects
The earth is a complex system, which continues to evolve and change. Climate change and global warming are currently popular in the political agenda. But what does “climate” really mean? The difference between weather and climate can be conveyed in a single sentence: “Climate is what you expect; weather is what you get.” Based on research of the geologic record, we know that climate change has happened throughout Earth's history and at present, ever-increasing evidence points to the roles that humans play in altering Earth systems. The Earth and its atmosphere receive heat energy from the sun; the atmospheric heat budget of the Earth depends on the balance between incoming solar radiation and outgoing radiation from the planet; which has been constant over the last few thousand years. However present evidence seems to suggest that the recent increase in temperature has been brought about by pollution of the atmosphere, in particular the release of huge amounts of carbon dioxide, mostly through Anthropogenic Forcing (human activity) and other various internal and external factors. I...
