Well before I read this book, I actually did think about what the title could mean and why the author wrote it so. Before I read this book I thought the book was about astronauts or something ridiculous. During the book I had some ideas that "The Fault In Our Stars" meant a mistake or something that predestined one's fate. I was kind of close. The title meant that the Fault is not always in the others, but in ourselves. For instance, Hazel Grace has cancer and a chronic illness not because she did something to cause it; It was just fate. I believe the title was just giving us a hint of the main idea of the book. Category 1, #5 “As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.” Even before she admits it to him, Hazel is totally and completely taken up by Augustus Waters. She can hardly control it, just like other people can't stop liking her. Cancer is irrelevant at this moment—and it's pretty amazing. Hazel falls in love with Augustus so quickly i think that it foreshadows carelessness and ignorance to what will happen next. I also believe it foreshadows what Green could be trying to get across to us throughout the book at the climax of the novel. This quote could also represent something in Hazel Grace having to do with "The Fault in Our Stars", the sense of uncontrollable actions - or maybe it was just ignorance. I think the "slowly, and then all at once" describes the whole book. At first it starts out with Hazel bored with life and giving up on herself, and then it accelerates extremely quickly to Augustus Waters being introduced and their love story along with them getting their wish to go to Amsterdam. But in the end, they both are devastated "slowly, and then all at once". Category 2, #... ... middle of paper ... ...nd saw Gus. She smiled and lied down on his chest hoping to wake him so as to get her back to her suite and refresh her oxygen tank. She got up and went slowly but steadily to the bathroom with her tank as a support to take her medicine to help her lungs clear out a little bit until she got back home. Gus mumbled,"Hazel Grace, good morning." "Good morning Gus". Gus got up and checked his leg and put on his shoes and clothes back on. "Hazel, we must get you back to your suite soon or your mom will wonder whats become of you." I nodded and put my meds back in my pocket and slowly walked back to Gus and lay back down, tired, for a little bit. Sleep fights cancer Gus, wait a little bit for me to catch my breath. Gus coaxed me out of my spot with his strong arms and looked deep into my soul with his beautiful blue eyes and we made for my suite which was a few doors down.
Florence is in her headquarters at the hospital, she works at. She is writing a letter to a patient's mother. When all of a sudden, Mary, a fellow nurse, walks in. Mary and Florence talk about how nice it is to work with each other and how happy Mary is here. Mary quotes, “ I’m glad I’m here with you Miss Nightengale. Good Night.” at the end of their discussion. Also, they talk about how both of their families don’t really want them there. They talk for a little and Florence seems very at home and happy. Later, after Mary had left, two gentlemen come to talk to Florence. It is Dr. Goodale and Dr. Hall that have come to speak with her. After talking for a while they both leave and let Florence to her work. In the hospital, Florence seemed like an entire new person, she was much more
Hazel is the main character and narrator of "Gorilla, My Love," by Toni Cade Bambara. She is between the ages of ten or twelve years old and an African American girl living in Harlem, New York with her family. While riding in the car with her grandfather, her uncle Jefferson Winston Vale, aka Hunca Bubba, and her little brother in the beginning of the story story's, she learns that Hunca Bubba, is in love and plans to be married. This angers Hazel, and she thinks back to an Easter Sunday when she and her brothers went to the movies.
In the Pilot episode of Freaks and Geeks, Lindsay underwent many of the relatable choices and struggles high school students endure every day. During this episode, Lindsay was in a rough spot due to the death of her grandmother, and as a result she changed her normal decisions. This includes everything from what she wore to school to the types of people she associated herself with. Though many changes were occurring, one thing remains: her desire to appear unchanged by her parents. I enjoyed the intro to Freaks and Geeks because the conflicts were engaging, and the introduction was easy to follow.
High school can be tough, but when people add traumatic events, life changing situations, and judgemental teenagers to the mix it can get worse. The world may seem like it’s ending, but it's important to remember that this is only a small portion of life. Not only like, but the world. The key to getting through high school is close and important friends. In the novel Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven, the author tells the reader that trust is not given, but earned.
According to Psychological Today,“Psychologists find that human beings have a fundamental need for inclusion in group life and for close relationships.” Without people that others need for fundamental reasons, the effects can change them as a person. In Of Mice and Men, the two main characters, George and Lennie, are working at a new ranch. They meet new people and try not to get into trouble. However, not everyone is included in the group. Some are left out and may become lonely. George and Lennie on the other hand have each other in a compelling friendship. In The Fault in Our Stars, Hazel, a girl with cancer, has been impacted by the one and only Augustus Waters. They are both cancer victims and end up falling for each other. They go on a trip to Amsterdam and meet Peter Van Houten, who is getting a little lonely. Throughout the novel, they are at their strongest and weakest points in life and need each other to get through it. Of Mice and Men and The Fault in Our Stars are similar in how they demonstrate themes such as the negative effects of loneliness and the value of friendship.
Her character shows a relatively normal being who has been so indoctrinated by the thoughts of total equality –the thoughts of the times– that she can do nothing but agree with them. This is shown when Hazel says she thinks society would fall if people were to start cheating at the rules, and that it would be like the “dark ages” again (Vonnegut, 1961). Really, Hazel is the “good” in the rather broad theme of good versus evil of the story. Though Harrison is the main protagonist, Hazel plays an important role in the story. She gives the reader an unfiltered look on the world she lives in, and the thoughts and feelings of the time, and for these reasons she becomes a crucial part–a
In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, space is a pretty messed up place. Visiting planets like Magrathea, the richest planet of all time; nearly being killed by the Vogons, and finding the answer to the universe are all some of the crazy adventures the group goes on. Adams really thinks outside of the box for this book, it is filled with chaos and lunacy, but also some romance. It is evident in this novel that the theme is love, which can be shown through the ridiculous adventures Arthur and Trillian journey on.
Hazel is a fiery little girl. She is strong-willed and openly opinionated, and believes that “when you got something on your mind, speak up and let the chips fall where they may” (Bambara 297). Although she is still very young, she has principles of what she believes to be wrong and right. She believes that her Hunca Bubba is not who he used to be since he has fallen in love and become engaged. Hazel feels betrayed by Hunca Bubba because when she was a little girl, he promised he would marry her. He is no longer Hazel’s Hunca Bubba; now, he is Jefferson Winston Vale. Hazel is befuddled with the entire situation. She is heartbroken that he seems to undermine the importance of his promise, by saying, “I was just teasin’” (298). He seems to be completely unaware that by breaking this promise, he has distorted Hazel’s entire outlook on trustworthiness. Hazel expresses her concrete belief that people should follow through with what they say, when she is commenting on the incident at the movie theater, “ I mean even gangsters in the movies say My word is my bond. So don’t nobody get away with nothing far as...
Growing up is hard and full of tests and changes. As bildungsroman novels, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green address and center on these issues. Lily, the main character in secret life of bees, is a teenager dealing with a hard past that is affecting her present and future. The fault in our stars protagonist, Hazel also faces struggles living an abnormal life battling cancer. Lily and Hazel both have comparable coming-of-age experiences in their epiphanies that change their thinking, the challenges of young love, and maturation from their journeys.
Augustus is a confident seventeen-year-old with osteosarcoma who becomes Hazel's boyfriend. Although Augustus is diagnosed with osteosarcoma, he remains bright and animated. In Chapter 1, Augustus can be remembered saying, “I’m on a rollercoaster that only goes up my friend”. Augustus uses a metaphor in this dialogue in order to emphasise that his life is only improving by the minute although his health suddenly declines throughout the second half of the book. He repeats this metaphorical phrase. Rather than seeing his life as a downward spiral, he somewhat sarcastically creates imagery of his life flourishing. The universe insensitively relapses his osteosarcoma as he was on the verge of getting
This simile shows how the love that she had was so intense, that it was almost a sin. The speaker also states, “Loving him is like trying to change your/ mind once you're already flying through the/ free fall” (lines 5-7). This is the speakers way of saying through figurative language that it is impossible to stop loving the person once she fell in love. She also states, “Like the colors in autumn, so bright just/ before they lose it all” (lines 8-9). The speaker connects how her love was so amazing and bright, like the leaves on the trees, to the leaves dying, like her relationship being over.
He creates a suffocating atmosphere mirroring the characters feeling: “crowding in on her thick and fast”, “The passage of an old woman with ophthalmia and a disease of the skin distracted her from her
Even if Hazel had made friends the ending would of still remained the same. Family gives a sense of purpose, and sense of care for one another and if Hazel had that his fait could of changed. In this quote it shows that after he killed Solace, he felt a sense of guilt, and sin. He has accepted the fact that sin is real. At this time it was a all time low for Hazel and he needed his family, which could of gave him support and rehabilitate him. Hazel had no reason to be alive because he only had himself to accompany. If he had a family then he could maybe have a reason to live, he could think of the people he was hurting. In the end due to his lack of family it lead Hazel to his downfall of suicide.
After she went to the doctors’ she brought us news that her cancer has grown slightly and the surgery will be had when she reaches twenty-two weeks in her pregnancy. The following day I was in choir class, I held back tears all day, but when I walked into Mrs. Chapman’s room I couldn’t hold back anymore. I started crying, so Mrs. Chapman called me into her office and gave me a very comforting hug. We started discussing how she understood what I was going through and how her mother had breast cancer. She explained to me how she was one of the main people who helped her mother while she was sick.
The movie The Fault in our Stars shows the reality of how teenagers that have terminal cancer live differently from other teenagers of their same age that are healthy in terms of cancer. In this movie, the two main characters are Augustus and Hazel; they are two teenagers about 17 years old that have terminal cancer. They cannot escape from their illness, but they can turn it into a positive experience. Death is not a preoccupation to them because even though time is limited for them, they are strong and have a desire to enjoy every moment of their life. This is a good movie to watch because it is very emotional, with efficacious and positive messages, hard truths and true love.
