On April 3, 1964, Malcolm X made a powerful speech called The Ballot or The Bullet that probably changed the way how African Americans saw themselves in 1964. African Americans didn’t have much to say when it came to elections during 1964. The caucasian politicians would come into black neighborhoods to force African Americans to put them in office. Throughout his speech, Malcolm X’s uses ethos, pathos, logos and tone to get his point across. He used rhetorical appeals to explain that all humans should be treated equally and given equal rights. Since his speech took place in the 60’s, most of the crowd that came to hear his speech were African Americans. African Americans wanted to hear how they could be motivated to bring equality to society. Malcolm X used great examples of rhetorical appeals to make his speech inspiring. Speeches are a method of persuading people to do something. For Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, their speeches were to bring equality for the people of color. However, their approaches are different. Consequently, the effects may be different. An example of their contrasting differences is a speech from each, King’s “I Have a Dream” and X’s “The Black Revolution”. Their speeches used pathos, a central metaphor, and a warning, but was presented differently.

As one of the most proficient civil rights activist of the 1960's, Malcolm X and his speeches were very influential but particularly one speech was highly esteemed, that being the Ballot or the Bullet speech. A speech that was given after the "I have A Dream speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. Despite, Dr. Martin Luther King being a pacifist and also a civil rights activist as well; Malcolm X was more tyrannical and advocated the use of violence. During this era, the democrats were in control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, therefore both the Senate and the House of Representatives were leaning towards providing more civil rights to African-Americans. The purpose of Malcolm X’s speech was to convince African Americans to become more politically aware and to vote members of their own race into office. The year 1964 is known for civil rights activists, racist groups, and political strife. In order to achieve this goal and increase the speeches effectiveness, X utilizes a variety of rhetorical strategies within his speech.
In his speech, “The Ballot or the Bullet,” Malcolm X’s tone is objective, yet motivating and optimistic, as he describes the theory of black nationalism, which he thinks all blacks must embrace in order to unite as a community under a single goal, to achieve equality. Through the use of factual evidence, schemes, and personal pronouns, Malcolm X builds on his ethos as he makes himself a more credible, trustworthy speaker about the dire situation of blacks. In the beginning of the speech, Malcolm X builds a personal profile of himself, as he mentions that he is a Muslim. However, after doing so, he disregards religion, claiming it does not matter. He states, “Whether we are Christians or Muslims or nationalists or agnostics, or atheists, we must first learn to forget our differences.” His authoritative and didactic tone here contributes to his ethos as it makes him sound credible.
“I’m for the truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole” (X). This quote by Malcolm X represented his attitude towards equality and self-empowerment. Even though the Declaration of Independence was exclusively signed by white men, Martin Luther King clarifies that it doesn’t change the fact, through signing the Emancipation Proclamation; black people are part of America as well. The year after his speech, Malcolm X adds in his own words with an accusatory tone and the subtle implication that his fellow people are not Americans but living in the United States and their end goal is to return to their “homeland” (Malcolm X 72). Nonetheless, like Martin Luther King, he criticizes the government about the lack of funds and the clear disparity between black people and white people through financial status. Not using a historical context to explain his cause, he instead incites people to stand with him for the injustice faced by the government now. Malcolm X was convinced that voting was the way to change racial prejudice in America. Malcolm X was always called an extremist when it came to black rights, and he was fed up with the nonviolent message coming from other civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. The goal Malcolm X had in this speech was to convince the black masses to not be content with the pace of change or the way change is going about.
