Recommended: The effect social media has on teens

In the article “Teenagers Leading Happy, Connected Lives Online” KJ Dell Antonia argues that the online world gives teenagers the opportunity to expand their social circles. While the thesis statement does have hints of truth to it, the author never truly responds to the dangers of online communication and friend making; creating what seems to be a one sided argument bringing no sense of depth to the article. Online bullying is a hot topic trend in the cyber world that surrounds the internet and online gaming with mass amounts of controversy. Ideally in the perfect world the author’s statement would be correct and it would be possible for teenagers all around the globe to build entire communities of friendships online; but at this certain point …show more content…

So making friends online may not be as easy as the author is making it out to be. Dell’Antonia explains in detail the importance of online circles in an average teenager’s life while also gathering using surveyed percentiles from the Pew Foundation. The author states how easy and simple it is to gather with friends online and how it can even easier to do so then in real life. She also addresses the similarities of online friendships and real world friendships. Ms. Lenhart is a consistent figure in this article that has gone as far to say that you may not even be considered an authentic member of today’s generation without a form of internet history. Dell’Antonia brings up many debatable points through the article but fails to expand upon them. “Adults have tended to see time online for teenagers as this frivolous, time wasting thing that’s just entertainment. Basically saying that all of the hateful and offensive words and content you may read or hear online will simply that may or may not be directed to you personally will seize to bother you in time. This statement is offense because entire campaigns are created to stop online bullying; many teens often go to cutting themselves and at most time’s suicide to escape for online bullying. So many households all around the globe are affected daily by online bullying, and just by the author saying that negative contents online will “Fade in time” is just offensive to anyone suffering or had suffered from online bullying. It’s quite evident that the author extracts his understanding of creating social circles over the online world strains from online gaming. “Eighty-four precent of networked-gaming boys and 62 percent of gaming feel more connected to friends when they play online” (Dell’Antonia 2015).
