First, it all starts with the dried seaweed, known as “Nori”, dried to perfection; crispy, flavorful, and fit to be consumed as a crucial part of sushi. Rice joins in, and is spread out on the seaweed. All the toppings get tossed into the mix, and brought into existence is a bundle of pride and enjoyment: sushi. As a passionate sushi lover, I follow the motto “Sushi is love, sushi is life. If it isn’t sushi, it’s never sushi.” Countless people around in my presence have eaten sushi; I stand by the judgment that it’s simply one of the best foods that exist. It’s not perfect, there are some negligible points that never arrive at the point of being singled out, noticed even, those issues right under your nose. Sure, they call it “imitation crab”, but I construe that “If it isn’t crab, it’s never crab.” Pointing out that fake crab does authentic sushi an unfathomable disservice, people frequently accept that it has a role in the culinary world. Sometimes, restaurants will even attempt to give you fake crab while claiming it actually is a genuine crab. Do not relent to them; keep insisting that you prefer real crab. Not only is fake crab a tool for deception, it is not natural nor is it healthy for you. Millions of people come from across the world to visit Seaworld every day without thinking about the lives of the animals behind the scenes. Why would they have concerns? From Seaworld’s commercials to the website, they convince the general public that Seaworld is the place to go to see the happy sea animals perform. If Seaworld is such an ecstatic place, what excuse does Tilikum, their greatest well known orca whale, have for the three attacks on trainers? The documentary “Blackfish” was created by the director Gabriela Cowperthwaite because she questioned herself after realizing Tilikum's odd behavior over time in captivity, and if there was any indisputable parts to animal captivity?
Personally, I love seafood. I have had the privilege to eat the freshest of fish from both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. I have been able to enjoy many types of fish cooked in many different ways. Blackfish is a 2013 documentary directed and written by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The film regards the effects that captivity has on killer whales, with a focus on a SeaWorld orca named Tilikum. Born in 1981, Tilikum was captured at the age of two off the coast of Iceland and taken to Sealand of the Pacific in British Columbia, Canada. 8 years later, Keltie Byrnes, a marine biology student and part time Sealand trainer, slipped into the pool containing Tilikum and two female whales. The three orcas submerged and dragged Byrnes around the pool, resulting in her death. Shortly thereafter, Tilikum was moved to SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida, where he killed two more people. Charles P. Dukes was found dead, draped over Tilikum’s back, in 1999 after evading security and entering the orca tank. Going to a Japanese restaurant for Bluefin tuna sushi or a fish and chip restaurant for Atlantic cod is a luxury that many people enjoy. However, these consumers may not know that they are eating endangered species. Do consumers put too much trust in the government and fisheries? Should they pay more attention to the source of their food? This essay will address the issue of where the responsibility of conserving ocean-life lies. The responsible parties are national governments, fisheries, and consumers. If these parties have an interest in the future of sea-life, the fishing industry, and seafood, then they all need to take responsibility for protecting endangered species from overfishing.
Frands de Waal is a world leading primatologist, author of The Ape of the Sushi Master, who decided to inform everyday people about his cultural reflections regarding his theory of survival of the kindest. He questions the popular theory of survival of the fittest with his own scientific observations. He allows us to explore the animal kingdom with his observations as he informs his audience on his theory. Overfishing is a harmful practice, that will eventually lead to the collapse of aquatic ecosystems, if it’s not dealt with promptly. Overfishing emerges from the combination of our over consumptive society mixed with the great profits that come from hauling in a good catch. The consumers demand for fish in Japan seems to be at an increasingly high rate due to the enjoyment and cultural values that arise from sushi and other traditional dishes involving seafood.
