'Sting: A Winter's Night Live from Durham Cathedral'
I had an opportunity to watch Sting perform A Winter's Night Live from Durham Cathedral, at the Durham Cathedral near his hometown of Newcastle in northern England. To be honest I had no idea what to expect from Sting performing a Christmas concert. When I think of Sting I immediately identify him with his group the police. I thought it was a great performance overall with the music spanning from his songs, lullabies, poems, folk, classical, traditional Christmas songs, and carols. I enjoyed the fact that Sting took the time to explain every song he was going to perform, which I found to be extremely helpful in understanding the music. Sting is accustomed to performing in large arenas and for him to change the venue and do it in a more intimate setting was a nice touch. Stings vocals were great and the sounds of the musicians were captivating. The use of the cathedral with the lights and the acoustic sounds made for a very good performance. His choice of using the lunar chamber orchestra, and the Durham Cathedral Boys Choir were a perfect combination for this concert. The music director along with Sting used a variety of musicians from the United States to Morocco. The small setting and the crowd he was able to project his sound without having to use a huge amount of energy. What was really impressive to me was the fact every musician gave it all they had with their performances. I really enjoyed the energy of the musicians and the audience during the Christmas show. As stated before the lights and acoustical sound from the cathedral; made it that much more of a special event.
