Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz was born on November 12, 1651 to an upper classfamily in colonial New Spain. As a child, she exhibited a lot of curiosity for the world around her and people noticed that she was a child prodigy. She moved to the capital in order explore these intellectual pursuits and eventually joined the Jeronymite religious order to avoid marriage. During the 17th century, the clergy viewed women as the daughters of Eve and associated them with evil and sin. Thus, women needed to remain within the domestic sphere to live a godly and controlled life. Sor Juana entered the covenant to continue her intellectual endeavors because she could study a number of different subjects. However, she felt conflicted about the role of science and religion, women’s place in society, and a number of other issues. The clergy eventually forced Sor Juana into submission and she ended all of her intellectual pursuits. She eventually died of smallpox in 1695. …show more content…

The figures of Sor Juana and Catalina de Erauso are larger than life. They did things no other women (and most men) during the 17th century could have ever dreamed of. Sor Juana was a nun who, through her confined cloister, produced works of literature and theology that are now part of both the Mexican and Catholic Cannon. De Erauso on the hand roamed free, she abandoned her religious life and instead took up the garb of a man and set out for the New World. Both of these women did not do what women were expected to do. Sor Juana’s life in the covenant should have been one of quiet contemplation and De Erauso should have never left the covenant she was a part of. In addition not only did De Erauso abandon her vows but she attempted, and succeeded, at passing herself off as a man which allowed her to do things that, if her true identity was known, every apparatus available in the Empire would have brought her to swift justice. Throughout the time I spent between the covers of The Prince of Los Cocuyos, I was astounded by Richard Blanco’s dynamic relationship with the novel’s sole “antagonist”: his abuela. Castillo first shows the reader her distrust of patriarchy and its vertical structures through La Loca Santa’s death. The first structure under scrutiny here is the Catholic Church. After La Loca awakens she throws herself into the air and lands on the top of the Church, saying that those below her carry the same scent that she had smelled while in hell. With Loca high above the others she can be seen as a “substation” for a new Chicana Christ figure (Delgadillo 895). In her famous The House of the Spirits, Isabel Allende documents the life of several characters during the Chilean reality in the 1930s. Her notorious feminist ideology is, at times, extremely obvious. Elements such as the clash of social classes and the social, political and economical conditions of Chile during this period of high turmoil are also well portrayed. Isabel Allende achieves to give us a good image of what life in Chile was like during those years. Some particular characters specially exemplify all of these elements very clearly.
In reviewing the poem Isla, written in 2000, by Virgil Suarez, I can say that this is the first poem I have reviewed for this class with which I can honestly relate. The fact that the poem was written during a time period when I was living is great. Additionally, the images that the author brings to light are from items that I have seen with my own two eyes. With that said, I do not need to use my imagination to see and, for me, that is a disappointment. What is more, before this course I hated poetry and never read it. Now I feel that I have a better understanding of what and how to read this literature. I have become a fan of poetry. (Not a big fan, but average.)

Women in Latin America were expected to adhere to extreme cultural and social traditions and there were few women who managed to escape the burden of upholding these ridiculous duties, as clearly shown in “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”. First, Latin American women were expected to uphold their honor, as well as their family's honor, through maintaining virtue and purity; secondly, women were expected to be submissive to their parents and especially their husbands; and lastly, women were expected to remain excellent homemakers.
I have a tender spot for Melissa de la Cruz, her books are one of the first YA I’ve read. Her upcoming title, Something in Between will come out on September. It tells the story of a Filipino immigrant, Jasmine who recently discovered they’re in US illegally. This means no full ride scholarship, and a threat of deportation. The premise suggest a somber realitistic fiction but even though that’s the case De la Cruz dubbed it as a Romeo and Juliet story. She promises a big love story. Hello, I am here for this

What I have found to be most interesting about both Deontology and Utilitarianism isn’t their approach to ethics, but rather their end goal. Deontology promotes “good will” as the ultimate good; it claims that each and every person has duties to respect others. On the other hand, Utilitarianism seeks to maximize general happiness. While these may sound rather similar at first glance (both ethical theories essentially center around treating people better), a deeper look reveals different motivations entirely. Deontology focuses on respecting the autonomy and humanity of others, basically preaching equal opportunity. Utilitarianism does not specify any means by which to obtain happiness—happiness is its only mandate. While happiness sounds like a great end goal, it is a rather impractical one and the lack of consideration of motivations and means of utility-increasing actions has some serious negative consequences. I prefer Deontology over Utilitarianism for its focus on individual’s rights, opportunity, and personal autonomy.
