According to Rene Dubos in his book, So Human an Animal, Dubos defined health as “a quality of life, involving social, emotional, mental, spiritual, and biological fitness on the part of the individual, which results from adaptations to the environment.” This conception of health has changed my overall understanding of how I, therefore, perceive health. Many people when talking about health consider the condition of their physiques and overlook the condition of their minds. However, health is not only about enhancing one’s physical aspects of health, but it also means being healthy in mind as well. An unhealthy mind result in a damaging body. Excellent mental health helps us make the most of life and enjoy it.

In the article “A change of heart about animals” author Jeremy Rifkin uses rhetorical appeals such as ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade humanity in a desperate attempt to at the very least have empathy for “our fellow creatures” on account of the numerous research done in pursuit of animal rights. Rifkin explains here that animals are more like us than we imagined, that we are not the only creatures that experience complex emotions, and that we are not the only ones who deserve empathy.
‘Health’ is the ‘absence of disease’ within the physical and mental entities of the body and mind. This is a definition given in the literal sense of the word, although what it essentially translates to for one individual may not mean the same to another. A person can be unhealthy or lead an unhealthy lifestyle without the affliction of disease. Kathryn Mansfield has a subjective view and her account is relatively holistic and all-encompassing of her potential, as a person in body and mind, “By health, I mean the power to live a full adult, living, breathing life in close contact with what I love. I want to be all that I am capable of becoming.”

Becoming Human is a short book by Jean Vanier, the founder of L’Arche which is a network of communities across the globe for people with physical and intellectual disabilities and those who wish to support them and learn from them. Through this ministry, Vanier has gained insight into what it means to becoming human. Becoming human is the process of setting one’s heart free from chaos and loneliness by accepting the past while being open to growth and change, which allows one to love and respect others and find a sense of belonging. The book is not necessarily about changing society for the better, but changing the lives of individuals in society for the better, which eventually changes and sculpts society for the better. Vanier shares biblical examples and personal stories from some of the people he has met through L’Arche, and further explains the process of becoming human by sharing his wisdom on topics such as loneliness, belonging, and forgiveness.
