The Woman That Outwitted Holmes
“A Scandal in Bohemia” the first of many Sherlock Holmes short stories. It was written by Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle and was first published in 1891. Its a story that involves the beautiful Ms. Irene
Adler, an extremely cunning and smart woman as Sherlock Holmes adversary and The King of
Bohemia a foolish ex-lover of Ms. Irene Adler as Sherlock Holmes client. Dr. Watson said it better
when he described how Sherlock Holmes sees and feels about Ms. Irene Adler:
“To Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman. I have seldom heard him mention her
under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex”
(Doyle 1). Sir Arthur Conan Doyle probably wanted to showcase a woman as a strong

When women are placed in a story they are normally under the domination or control of the
men. “When Conan Doyle does place a female subject actively and vocally in the forefront of a
narrative, the woman is nevertheless subjugated to male characters by her potentially harmful or
morally bankrupt nature” ( Favor). In British detective stories, and Sherlock Holmes ' tales, the
women are normally almost always portrayed as weak compared to their male counterparts. Men in a
Sherlock Holmes tale are almost always seen as strong opponents for Sherlock Holmes. This strays
from the traditional standards of British detective stories and of the Sherlock Holmes format as in
other Sherlock Holmes stories women are never seen or pro traded as a strong cunning opponent for
great detective Sherlock Holmes. Normally, men are always pro trade as strong opponents for

The Sherlock Holmes short story “A Scandal in Bohemia” strays from the standard British
detective stories and Sherlock Holmes stories with the use of character disguises such as the King
of Bohemia 's use of a black mask to hide his identity from Sherlock Holmes and the King of
Bohemia 's giving of a false name. Ms. Irene Adler disguises herself as a man after
(The adventure of the speckled band) The two also differ in other ways, for example although Holmes is intellectually gifted he lacks the contact of friends, this shows him as a loner. On the other hand, Watson, being the average man, has friends and later in... ... middle of paper ... ... olmes gives us the information that Watson didn’t see and tells us the rest of the case. In my opinion, the best of the Sherlock Holmes stories is The Last
With all of the women in Holmes’ life it would seem Holmes had every opportunity given to him to settle down and live a normal life. So why would he continue down the path he was? Out of all the women in Holmes’ life it was his second wife, Myrtle Z. Bellman’s father Holmes tried to swindle and kill, he was unsuccessful (America’s Serial Killers).
A detective is vital in an effective detective story because arguably there would not be a story and a detective to restore law and order and the villain/criminal would not be caught. Whereas it there was a detective it would have been a different story. A typical detective should be smart, observant, manipulative, and analytic and should have a good sense of justice. Sherlock Holmes has all of these elements to fight crime. Sherlock Holmes has the typical elements as a normal detective in classical detective fiction for example he is observant “Sherlock Holmes’s quick ...
...he met the detective, fell victim to Moriarty’s games. “Moriarty is playing with your mind too. Can’t you see what’s going on!” (Sherlock). During Holmes’ last days before his faked suicide, he pleads with John to see reason through Jim’s manipulations, as does Desdemona with Othello’s accusations. Even Sherlock’s oldest friend Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade was doubting Holmes’ credibility.
Throughout most of literature and history, the notion of ‘the woman’ has been little more than a caricature of the actual female identity. Most works of literature rely on only a handful of tropes for their female characters and often use women to prop up the male characters: female characters are sacrificed for plot development. It may be that the author actually sacrifices a female character by killing her off, like Mary Shelly did in Frankenstein in order to get Victor Frankenstein to confront the monster he had created, or by reducing a character to just a childish girl who only fulfills a trope, as Oscar Wilde did with Cecily and Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest. Using female characters in order to further the male characters’
Without his career, Conan Doyle had much spare time and decided to write stories as a pass time. These stories he wrote were detective stories with Sherlock Holmes as the main character. Sherlock Holmes had many different skills and abilities. Some of the characteristics he had reflected on the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This pass time, which became partially of a career for him,
The Sherlock Holmes series, has, like most enduring literary works, both challenged and conformed to the ideals of its age. Today, more than a hundred years after his first adventure, Sherlock Holmes remains one of the most beloved fictional characters of the Victorian era.

Sherlock Holmes, one of the most famous fictional characters in literary history is a detective capable of solving the most complex mysteries. The author behind the character, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a very successful British writer. The majority of his literary success is due to his crime-fiction tales such as the Sherlock Holmes series. However, Mr. Doyle and Mr. Holmes himself must not take all the credit because there is another character that plays a major role in the stories success. He goes by the name of Dr. Watson, Holmes’ sidekick. The importance of Dr. Watson is evident in many of Doyle’s stories such as A Scandal in Bohemia and A Study in Scarlett.
An examination of Sherlock Holmes' abilities and techniques. allied to his personal characteristics, enable him to solve crimes. There are many reasons to explain why Sherlock Holmes is one of the world's most famous fictional detectives. However, the main reason for This is that not only are the stories complex, but the actual character of Sherlock Holmes has extreme depth, with some subtle. elements of his character only becoming apparent when he is in certain situations.
In 1887, Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but only in 1891, in A Scandal in Bohemia that Holmes’ stories became very famous, and eventually, Holmes’ adventures got adapted for film. Lately, in 2010 BBC made a series called “Sherlock”, and the first episode is called “A Study in Pink” referring to the first book where Sherlock Holmes was introduced. The TV adaptation is significantly more effective in showing the relationship between Holmes and Watson with changes made to the plot and characters.
Holmes likes attention and never tells anyone his methods, so he appears to be psychic. Dr. Watson is a medical doctor who met Holmes in a previous case, and they have been friends ever since. With his knowledge of medicine, he helps Holmes solve cases that have anything to do with drugs or lunacy, especially since “doctors make the best criminals”. They have ways to make undetected poison and can easily leave their patients to die.” I can relate to Holmes the most because he always likes to solve mysteries, just like the time when I wanted to solve my Secret Santa clue immediately.
The great part of Irene Adler outsmarting Holmes is that it is very ironic, and goes against the beginning of the story. The very first paragraph of the first story in this collection, A Scandal in Bohemia, includes the following line: "He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen."(405 Pickering). Part of Sherlock Holmes's attraction, both for Watson as his narrator and for the readers, is the guy's superbly disciplined mind. Conan Doyle emphasizes Holmes's magnificent brain in many ways: he uses Watson's admiration to reinforce the reader's own. Which is why the story being told from Watsons point of view gives it a completely different feel. He gives Holmes lots of foils, including foolish officers and the criminals he's hunting. And perhaps the best trick of all, Holmes frequently gets to show off his smarts by wowing
The Influence of Sherlock Holmes Every once in a while, a fictional character is created whose name will live on forever. There’s King Arthur, Scarlett O’Hara, Batman; the list goes on and on. However, there is one character in particular that not only became famous in literature and movies, but also shaped modern detective techniques. This character is Sherlock Holmes.
