Recommended: The concept of pain
From the beginning of birth until death we may experience all forms of suffering. As we grow older, we learn that certain things that we want may involve some pain. For example, goals need some type of action in order to be attained. Schopenhauer says that humans experience pain in everything, such as performing routines, we become enslaved to them. Schopenhauer view of life is constructed in an optimistic way. He believes that human life is not a wonderful thing because it brings pain into our lives. He emphasizes this reality by pointing out that it does not benefit humans to suffer.
I understand that Schopenhauer chooses life to be meaningless for the sole reasons that he states there is pain in attaining happiness. We have to put effort to accomplish what we want. Schopenhauer makes a distinction between humans and animals’ place in life. They differ in the way their nature is supposed to behave. For instance, humans fear death because it terminates life; they do not what happens after death. On the other hand, animals do not think of death like humans do; their only

I agree with Schopenhauer that suffering is a part of human and animal life. If we are realistic, life is not all sunshine and rainbows. There are times where we feel disconnected with other people and with our spirit. I believe it is the reason why we sometimes feel miserable at times, because we dwell on the past and look forward to the future; we spend too much time thinking about it that it brings pain. Another reason I support Schopenhauer’s belief is when he states that “our existence is to pay a price of our sin” (p 51). Perhaps the author meant that as humans purpose in life is to realize our sin and our pains. We have to learn how to deal with suffering because it is a part of life because even though we avoid pain, it already comes with our everyday actions and
suffering hurts man spirit is does more good then constant happiness and power. We have to beat
There is a old time saying that “you will never know what true happiness feels like until you have felt pain”. In order to reach where you are going in life you have to go through hardship and pain to find your inner contentment. Often times, people who have too much in life always takes it for granted ,because all they have is pleasure and not knowing the feelings of pain and being without. Martha C. Nussbaum author of “who is the happy warrior” states that you have to go through pain to find the true meaning of happiness while Daniel M.Haybron author of “Happiness and Its Discontents” states that pain doesn 't bring happiness, happiness is just a thing you feel when you think you may have enough. To find happiness you have to go through the unbearable process of life.
Thinkers and philosophers have been pondering misery since the dawn of civilization. At the dawn of humanity, humans existed to survive and reproduce; every day was a struggle. However, with the advent of civilization, humanity has moved further and further away from its original evolutionary drives, and it can be argued by secular thinkers that humans exist now to find happiness. Therefore, misery can be seen as the biggest obstacle to human happiness, yet misery itself is a mystery to many. Karl Marx’s The Communist Manifesto and Sigmund Freud’s Civilization and its Discontents put forth the authors’ opinions on the origins of mortal misery, and suggest methods to solve the problem of misery. Although the two have differing views, both see
Siddhartha learns that existence is suffering many times in the first and second chapters. On page 11 Siddhartha says, ¨… and all were not worth a passing glance, everything lied, stank of lies; they were all illusions of sense, happiness and beauty. All were doomed to decay. The world tasted bitter. Life was pain¨(11). While Siddhartha lives with the Samanas he realizes that by simply existing, life is pain. When you live and deceive yourself, rather than denying yourself you cannot be at peace and you will suffer. Another example to note is on page 3 where it says, “Siddhartha had begun to feel the seeds of discontent within him. He had begun to feel that the love of his father and mother, and also the love of his friend govinda, would not
In order to understand Schopenhauer’s philosophy, one must understand the concept of the will. Schopenhauer seems to describe the will as a blind force of our feelings, our thoughts, and our perception. The only way we see the world is through the will. We are limited because we only see our representation of it through the will, not the actual reality, the thing in of itself. For this reason the world is will, our will, and it has desires. These desires are insatiable, so life becomes defined by suffering. Suffering, however, is only our representation. The world in of itself, aside from our representation, has no suffering. Schopenhauer says the only way to escape the will, which is suffering, is through knowledge and art. There is a distinction between ordinary knowledge and pure knowledge, however. Ordinary knowledge, according to Schopenhauer, was a result of the will. Pure knowledge is actual contemplation of the world in of itself without influence from the will. This can only be attained through art that is able to separate us from our perceptions of reality and reach a state of pure knowledge. In the Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche responds to this by agreeing with Schopenhauer’s philosophy in that art is the way to avoid suffering. He argues that the art capable of ending suffering is tragedy, which is a fusion of the Apollonian and the Dionysian.
Based on the readings “Schopenhauer as educator” by Nietzsche, Schopenhauer’s “thinking of one self” and personal higher education experience I believe college level education obstruct the pursuit of true education. As humans, we enjoy patterns and repetition. The issue with uniformity is the fact we become experts at fulfilling expectations and not discover the true self. Schopenhauer embraced his uniqueness. Although it let him into a pessimistic mid set he accomplished his true self. Overcoming expectations is difficult and the fact that Schopenhauer was able to accomplish what was expected, he inspired people like Nietzsche to do the same. It is difficult to stay within the lines and follow directions blindfolded. It is actually more difficult
Susan Wolf tries to show the exact character of the motives and reasons that give meaning to our lives, she claims that meaningfulness is an attribute that cannot be lessened or included under either happiness or morality. According to modern philosophical accounts of meaning of life, personal happiness is the motivation on why people do or should act. Wolf rebukes these theories. Instead she provides sort of a wider understanding of what adds to the aspect of our lives. When meaning is seen as a third sort of value, our understanding of happiness and morality also changes.
Suffering is an individual's basic affective experience of pain or distress, often as a result of one’s physical, emotional or spiritual circumstance (Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy 2006). Suffering can be classified as physical; for example pain caused by a dislocated knee, emotional; for example one’s grief over the death of a loved one, or spiritual; which is described as the state of being separated from the blissful nature of your divine self (soul). To suffer physically or emotionally is often unavoidable; however it can be argued that spiritual liberation...
Many people around the world are speculating about the idea that suffering makes you who you are. American thinker Richard Niebuhr states, “It is in the response to suffering that many and perhaps all men individually, and in their groups, define themselves, take on character, develop their ethos.” I agree with his thoughts on this subject completely. I support his thoughts because I have witnessed a change in personality and have personally had my mindset altered in result to suffering. Not only do I agree for these reasons, but I also agree because no matter the situation, everyone is affected by suffering.
Suffering can be defined as an experience of discomfort suffered by a person during his life. The New York Times published an article entitled what suffering does, by David Brooks (2014). In this article, Brooks explains how suffering plays an important role in our pursuit of happiness. He explains firstly that happiness is found through experiences and then, suffering can also be a motivation in our pursuit of happiness. In other words, suffering is a fearful but necessary gift to acquire happiness. This paper is related to motivation and emotion, two keys words to the pursuit of happiness (King, 2010).
Arthur Schopenhauer’s meaning of life includes ideas that attempt to identify factors that constitute happiness. According to Schopenhauer, the three factors are what one is, what one has, and how one is regarded by others. ( Pigliucci, 2006 ) What one has and how one is regarded appear to be the two deciding factors that determine an individual’s happiness. Not much consideration is given to what one is. These ideas led to the philosophy that “personality is the greatest factor in happiness.” ( Pigliucci, 2006 ) Schopenhauer believed that personal attributes that are possessed need to be utilized to their maximum potential. The relationship between wealth and happiness is positively recognized by Schopenhauer however, once needs are meet, the relationship ceases to exist. Schopenhauer believes that our life existence is based on the fleeting present. ( The Meaning of Life, 2015 )
Suffering and hardship are a part of life. You can look at any culture, any country, any family, and see that, at any point in time, there is something that can seem absurd or hopeless. The Myth of Sisyphus is a prime example in having experience absurd suffering with no end in sight, where Sisyphus is punished by the gods to push a bolder up to the top of a hill, only to have it roll back down and start all over again. Albert Camus, however, says that in any absurd situation, happiness is present. To Camus, Sisyphus is an absurd man, yet he has the ability to find small moments of happiness during his eternal punishment. Sisyphus finds happiness at the top of the hill, almost celebrating his small, redundant accomplishment of reaching
I think suffering should be expected in life because it would allow people to adjust their unrealistic expectations about living a happy and healthy life. Life is constantly changing, and sometimes shit hits the fan, so you have to learn to accept and deal with it. I have been so much happier with my life once I realized that people are not supposed to be happy or content twenty-four seven. I also learned firsthand that our suffering ends or gets better when we lose our attachments and/or cravings. The Eight Fold Path is a set of recommendations for how to reach Nirvana and I follow all of them except for ‘Right Contemplation’. According to Buddhism, one must abstain from mild altering substances to maintain a clear mind. I believe we should be able to drink Jack Daniels (in moderation) because it allows a congested mind to breathe. It would be absolutely incredible to reach Nirvana. Like Confucianism, I believe the relationships we have with people are extremely important. I almost feel like my relationships are part of my identity because of the role I play. I am a mother, daughter, older sister, ‘super longtime girlfriend’ and those roles make up who I am and guide my life’s purposes. I also believe that people are born somewhat bad and selfish and need guidance to live a virtuous
After reading Salvifici Doloris and Power of the Powerless, my personal philosophy regarding the role of suffering is that it can generally be used as a tool to strengthen individuals or large groups of people through solidarity and empathy in the community; however, while suffering can bring solidarity, it can also break those undergoing the stress of suffering as well as people around the person in pain as they are shut out from the lives of the sufferer; moreover, the physical and spiritual suffering will most likely stem from the result of physical and/or moral misconduct, but that does not make the suffering bad because it is a consequence that results in the sufferer growing a reluctance to commit the same error again. Suffering requires
Now someone might think that life is meaningless only if they think life is absurd. There 's a difference between an absurd and a meaningless life. An absurd life is meaningless, but a meaningless life is no absurd. How can a life be meaningless but not absurd you ask? Suppose everyone 's life including yourself is objectively meaningless, without purpose or any point to it at all, some people might take life more seriously than others. To take your life seriously Nagel says to aim for more than comfort and survival. You should dedicate yourself to something important, not important to you but in a larger scale. The problem is the seriousness of the issue because when viewing life from the outside it tends to lose
