Taking grounded theory in perspective, I have chosen to do president Obama’s speech on gun safety reform, which was given in the East Room of the White House. According to Glaser and Strauss (1967), grounded theory is when researchers go into a field with no knowledge of theory on the topic that they are going to do a research on (Tierney 2016). After reading and listening to President Obama’s speech on guns safety, I have come to known that gun violence has increased in The United States and it has reached to a point where strong actions must be taken on gun laws before any other gun relates incident arises again. There are many American in the United States that believe that changing any gun laws will violate their second amendment, but as …show more content…
What he meant by Americans in his speech was referring to all the citizen who have lost their loved ones and the victims of gun violence and was referring to the citizens to take a step. American also refers to the struggles or how the citizen cope with the aftermath of gun violence. This brings to the second theme and that was gun violence. The entire speech was on gun violence, but it was not just focusing on the mass gun shootings that had taken place throughout the Unites States. When President Obama talked or referred to gun violence he meant the lives that are lost through the use of guns, such as suicide, domestic violence, or even accidental shooting. As stated before, Obama talked how 300,000 American died each year by guns. By using these numerical examples, he was trying to explain how these innocent lives could have been saved. In his speech he also included that the United States of America was prone to violence compared to the other countries and gun related incited came along so frequently that we as a whole are not doing anything to change …show more content…
As stated above that it is easy for anyone to buy a gun without any sort of background checks. And keeping this in mind, we just do not have to worry about the criminals but we have to remember that there are mentally ill people as well who can do anything once they have a gun in their hands. President Obama had a great example in his speech. He said that after the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting incident, a man in china attacked children in a school with a knife. There was not much damage done because the Chinese man did not have a gun. If he did have a gun he could have done a lot of damage, both physical and emotional. From this incident, we could think about what the outcomes could
In his article “Gun debate? What gun debate?” Mark O 'Mara discuses the controversial issue of gun control. O’Mara takes the tragic school shooting in Oregon as an opportunity to voice his opinion on the debate of guns. He clearly states his position and explains that gun violence has increased enormously because of the lack of command by the government and support from the public to speak out against it. O’Mara claims the issue is no longer a debate because it is so evident that guns have become a significant problem in this country and therefore actions must be taken to control and govern gun laws. In his article he attempts to raise awareness to the severity of the issue and tries to persuade his readers to take a stance against gun violence
In the Obama Sandy Hook School Shooting speech, the exigence that Obama talked about was the tragedy of the school shooting. In the speech, he talks about how he is reacting as a parent and not as a president. Obama also talks about how the children had their life ahead of them. He basically said the children were going to become something in life; some were going to get married, and some were going t...
Right now, the U.S. has a National Instant Background Check System; however, it contains many flaws. This system is meant to act as a filter to stop the wrong people from having guns. In 2007, the Bipartisan legislation was passed to strengthen this system. It relies on data supplied by the states, but the data is often incomplete and inadequate (Merino 104). Unlicensed gun sellers have also created a dangerous loophole. The law makes an exception for gun sellers who aren’t federally licensed gun dealers. These sellers sell guns informally through venues such as gun shows, and are not required to run background checks. This is a dangerous loophole where people who should not have guns can get them (“Gun”). Senator Frank R. Lautenberg once stated, commenting on the gun sh...
In his opening lines Obama shows his compassion for the victims and mourners of the shooting stating: “I have come here tonight as an American who, like all Americans, kneels to pray with you today, and will stand by you tomorrow.” With just this short statement Obama aligns himself with the American people, showing his empathy and comforting the people by saying “I will be here for you.” This allows him to form a connection with his audience, which he further reinforces though his use of the term “we” when addressing the American population: “We mourn with you for the fallen. “We join you in your grief.” He also draws parallels between the nation’s mourning following the shooting and the mourning that comes with losing a family member...
A growing number of publicized tragedies caused by gun violence have caused a great stir in the American community. Recently, President Barack Obama has made proposals to tighten the regulation of and the restrictions on the possession of weapons in America to lessen these tragedies. Should the legislative branch decide in favor of his proposals, all American citizens who do or wish to own the type of weapons in question or who use current loopholes in existing policy would be directly affected. His proposals, which are to “require background checks for all gun sales, strengthen the background check system for gun sales, pass a new, stronger ban on assault weapons, limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, finish the job of getting armor-piercing bullets off the streets, give law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime, end the freeze on gun violence research, make our schools safer with new resource officers and counselors, better emergency response plans, and more nurturing school climates, [and] ensure quality coverage of mental health treatment, particularly for young people,” have been cause for a large amount of recent debate (whitehouse.gov).
A. According to the Brady Foundation, one of the leading campaigns to end gun violence. 36% of the nation, 18 of 50 states, impose a waiting period.. (prevent crimes of passion, no background check, not able to check if buyer is prohibited or not to purchase.)
McMahan, 3) So, McMahan’s main premises come into play, either everyone has guns, including criminals, or nobody has guns. “Gun advocates prefer for both rather than neither to have them” McMahan remarks, but ultimately that will just leave the country open to more violence and tragedies. “As more private individuals acquire guns, the power of the police declines, personal security becomes a matter of self help, and the unarmed have an incentive to get guns.” (McMahan, 2) Now everyone is armed, and everyone has the ability to kill anyone in an instant, making everyone less secure. Just as all the states would be safer if nobody were to possess the nuclear weapons, our country would be safer if guns were banned from private individuals and criminals.
“I don’t believe people should be able to own guns. (Obama)” This said prior to Obama’s presidency, in the 1990’s, is still a topic that is constantly questioned today. Many American’s feel the need to seek ownership of weapons as a source of protection; While others believe that private ownership of guns will do nothing more but heighten the rate of violence due to people taking matters into his or her own hands. Philosophy professor Jeff McMahan agrees with Obama’s statement in regard to the ownership of guns. In his New York Times editorial titled “When Gun ‘Control’ Is Not Enough,” McMahan provides evidence to support his theory of the dangers that quickly follow when allowing the community to own guns legally. McMahan, throughout the text, shows responsible reasoning and allows the reader the opportunity to obtain full understanding and justifies his beliefs properly.
Today in the United States many people argue over the fact of guns being legal or illegal. There are people using guns for personal safety and there are others who use them for crimes, as well as for other situations. Firearm deaths in the United States have slowly been decreasing from year to year with all these bills getting passed to promote a safer country than ever before. Guns are the main weapon for youth suicide, school shootings, and for committing murder. In 2010 there were 2,711 infants, child, and teenage firearm deaths. As in school shootings and in committing murder, studies show shooters often had multiple, non-automatic guns, shootings were planned, most youth tell before shooting, shooters have a history of being bullied or threatened, shooters have mental issues, and shooters have done suicidal gestures before (Gun Control with School Shootings). Although there are people who use guns for murdering, there are also those who oppose guns being used without the proper requirements. 85% of all respondents to the survey supporting requiring states to report people to national background-checks systems who are prohibited from owning gu...
The conversation of gun control and gun regulation has been a great debate over the decades. NRA Executive vice president Wayne LaPierre, in his speech on Newtown Shooting that occurred on December 21st, 2012, addresses the topic of gun control and argues that guns are not the cause of gun violence. LaPierre's project is to instead of gun control and decreasing the numbers of guns, increase the numbers of guns to solve the problem of gun violence. On the other side of debate, an American journalist, Nicholas Kristof, in his journal, "Do We Have the Courage to Stop This?" argues that guns are the cause of gun violence, but they should not be banned. Kristof's project is to regulate guns with many cautions. While these two authors have different arguments and projects, they use similar strategies to advance their claims. This paper will focus on the way each author strategically uses compare and contrast, cause and effect, and problem-solution to advance their claims and how effective these strategies are used.
President Obama’s Address to the nation was presented on January 5, 2016. His speech was shown on all of the major network stations. The main goal of his speech was to get the point across to the nation about the increasing problem of gun use. His speech really focused on the issue of gun control and if it would benefit the country. Overall, the biggest idea of his Address was that gun control is a large issue in the United States. The way to prevent deaths caused by firearms can be prevented in other ways than taking peoples guns away. The examples brought up in this Address really stood out to me. The use of personal, national, and global examples really made his speech stronger on the topic of effectiveness.
The Orlando Shooting, the tragic event when an ISIS member shot and killed many people at a gay nightclub. A security guard named Omar Mateen, who had pledged allegiance to a terrorist group called ISIS, had entered the night club and opened fired on the people in the club. By the end of the shooting, forty-nine people had lost their lives and fifty-three people were injured. The whole country was shocked and upset about the event that took place on June 12th, 2016. As our nation 's President, Barack Obama had to reassure the country that they would do everything in their power to help the victims, the families of the victims and everyone else. He would do everything in his power to make sure
Eighty-nine people die from gun violence in the United States every day according to the Brady Campaign , from school children to victims of domestic violence to people going about their daily lives. As we mourn the lives of those killed in incidents of gun violence across the country, we need to take action. We should all do everything in our power to keep tragedies like this from happening again. When it comes to addressing mass shootings, we need new answers
One of the main issues today is gun control and gun violence; there are many Americans who are opposed and many who are for the control of
...s in such a brutal world is not a good idea. It is a known fact that criminals will always find ways to gain illegal possession of weapons because for them the law means nothing. With regard to Federal laws and policies, it is crucial for them to be upheld effectively and help law makers curb illegal purchase of firearms. Both sides have pleaded their case openly, defending their claims of gun control and, which is better for the American public. At this current junction it is not clear if a compromise over the issue will be reached anytime soon. Current measures proposed by the US President, such as increased funding for patients with mental illness and background checks will go a long way in addressing events of senseless shooting. If the rights of owning a gun are taken away, this will only make firearms more valuable and people more vulnerable against attackers.
