It’s so ironic that Harry Jackson and Tony Perkins publish the “Personal Faith, Public Policy” in 2008 when the United States is experiencing such a major shake with the Federal Government. The question was asked, what kind of government do you want (Jackson, Perkins, 2008)? Then the choice was given: honest, efficient government that has security for property, life and personal freedom (Jackson, Perkins,2008). All the above choice is necessary; however, the government is on the Lord shoulder (Isaiah 9:6). God has ordained four institutions of authority: self-government meaning (I Peter1:15-16) the biblical standards of conduct; the institution of family, how it is structure (Ephesians 6:1-4); the institution of civil government meaning
God is requiring man to have a life of holiness (Genesis 9:5-6); and lastly institution of the church (Acts 2) your body as being the church (Jackson, Perskins,2008). A perfect example is this the world need a foundation and supporting pillars that hold the civil society according to Jackson and Perkins. The biblical worldview according the authors concerning the churches who are effective in their teaching is the following: Thirteen percent of nondenominational mostly fundamentalist congregation; Ten percent of Pentecostal membership; and Eight percent of Baptist membership (Jackson, Perkins,2008). Something is wrong with this picture, if people say with their mouth they love God then these percentages should be one hundred percent.

Acts of Faith (2005) is a breathtaking account of civil war and genocide in Sudan penned by Phillip Caputo. The characters veritably dance with life among the pages as they try to help the starving multi-ethnic Sudanese tribes. Set in the mid 1990's, there are no clearly defined protagonists or antagonists as Caputo shows in the novel the full circle of human nature, both evil and good, selfish and selfless.
Washington clearly and strongly asserts that the aspects of religion and morality were important not only for happiness of the people and the county, but also were vital in supporting political growth and well-being for the nation. Accordingly, Washington proclaims, “of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensible supports” (Washington, 1796). Rachel Held Evans in “Faith Unraveled” questions every part of her religion, and is not sure how she should be living her life. Evans struggles to fully believe in faith that Christians are supposed to. She has all these questions and doubts, and is looking for answers but struggles to find the answers. Other Christians think what she is doing is unfaithful and she is not a real Christian. She is curious how people who profess Gods’ holy name, but then do not act in a holy way will be judged. Skeptics exist in almost every aspect of life, but when it comes to religion there seems to be a lot more. She struggles to handle some of the questions the skeptics ask and makes her question her religion. Evans also struggles to understand how this
In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt recognized the place that religion holds in democracy. “Religion, by teaching man his relationship to God, gives the individual a sense of his own dignity and teaches him to respect himself by respecting his neighbor's. Democracy, the practice of self-government, is a covenant among free men to respect the rights and liberties of their fellows. International good faith, a sister of democracy, springs from the will of civilized nations of men to respect the rights and liberties of other nations of men. This statement supported the idea that religion is associated with a well functioning government. However, in the case of Everson v. Board of Education it was stated that, “The First Amendment has erected a wall between church and state. That wall must be kept high and impregnable. This case occurred after Roosevelt’s presidency, and left a significant impact on the American government, as it made clear that religion had no place in the government (Hugo Black). In Dynamics of Faith, Paul Tillich redefines faith as the dynamic state of being ultimately concerned about some object that is perceived as being “ultimate.” An ultimate concern demands everything, even including ones most valuable possessions and their moral values, but in return promises everything including total fulfillment, salvation, etc. He goes on to explain symbols of faith, their meaning and their characteristics.
One of the biggest misconceptions of today’s society is that politics is run by pure fact and argument, with no spiritual aspect. However, Amanda Porterfield verifies in her novel Conceived in Doubt that this statement is pretentious and false. Amanda Porterfield takes us back to the time of early government structure and development. This era in the United States is in a stage of constant change and reformation. The United States could even be argued as blind by their religious views, affecting their morals and well-being for the future of the nation. In her novel, Porterfield stresses that the government is in no way free of the church’s principles and deserts the attempt to break the bond.
With sounds of youthful laughter, conversations about the students’ weekends, and the shuffling of college ruled paper; students file into their classrooms and find their seats on a typical Monday morning. As the announcements travel throughout the school’s intercoms, the usual “Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance” becomes no longer usual but rather puzzling to some students. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, indivisible, with liberty, and justice for all.” Confusion passes through some of the student’s minds. With the reoccurrence of “God” in the backdrop of American life, the relationship between church and state has become of little to no matter for American citizens just as it has with American students. While congress makes no law respecting an establishment of religion, the term “freedom of religion” presents itself to no longer be the definition of “free”, while also having its effects on debates today. According to Burt Rieff, in Conflicting Rights and Religious Liberty, “Parents, school officials, politicians, and religious leaders entered the battle over defining the relationship between church and state, transforming constitutional issues into political, religious, and cultural debates” (Rieff). Throughout the 20th century, many have forgotten the meaning of religion and what its effects are on the people of today. With the nonconformist society in today’s culture, religion has placed itself in a category of insignificance. However, in ‘The Federalist’ James Madison states that Government must have the power to control people, but that the abuses of government must be controlled. He states that ‘in framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the greatest difficulty lies in this; you must first enable the government to control the govern; and in next place oblige it to control itself.’
...By tying the church to the government, people expect the government to behave ethically, but often times, an entirely moral ruler will be overthrown. People expect rulers to act differently than themselves. A ruler cannot show any weakness, or else he will no longer be feared enough to keep him in power, and he will be overthrown. Everybody sees what a ruler seems to be, but few really know who he is. A ruler must seem determined and moral to the people, and show positive results from his leadership. The most important thing for a ruler to do is to avoid being hated or despised by the people, which could occur if a ruler took people's property. For the people, more than the form of power, their perception of power may be the most important for a ruler to maintain his position. “If a ruler wins wars and holds on to power, the means he has employed will always be judged honorable, and everyone will praise him.”(pg.55) Therefore, a ruler should look mainly to winning and to the successful protection of his country. The ways he utilizes for this will always be considered honorable and will be praised by everybody.

Does faith matter in America? Why should it matter? As our America is changing, so can its beliefs. Mitt Romney challenges the subject of faith in America by stating that those who take office should not be judged by their faith, but by their work. Romney believes that in times of faith is fundamental to America’s greatness in his speech “Faith in America.” He draws in the audience by not only speaking about the moralistic qualities of it, but by talking about the constitutional rights and liberty of our nation. He expertly uses the idea of America’s future to trigger pathos, and later has the audience agree with him by using ethos. His speech is compelling to the audience because they all have a personal relationship to the subject of religion.
In many aspects of our lives, the use of faith as a basis for knowledge can be found. Whether it is faith in the advice of your teacher, faith in a God or faith in a scientific theory, it is present. But what is faith? A definition of faith in a theory of knowledge context is the confident belief or trust in a knowledge claim by a knower, without the knower having conclusive evidence. This is because if a knowledge claim is backed up by evidence, then we would use reason rather than faith as a basis for knowledge . If we define knowledge as ‘justified true belief’, it can be seen that faith, being without justification, can never fulfill this definition, and so cannot be used as a reliable basis for knowledge. However, the question arises, what if a certain knowledge claim lies outside of the realm of reason? What if a knowledge claim cannot be justified by empirical evidence and reasoning alone, such as a religious knowledge claim? It is then that faith allows the knower to decide what is knowledge and what is not, when something cannot be definitively proved through the use of evidence. When assessing faith as a basis for knowledge in the natural sciences, the fact arises that without faith in the research done before us, it is impossible to develop further knowledge on top of it. Yet at the same time, if we have unwavering faith in existing theories, they would never be challenged, and so our progress of knowledge in the natural sciences would come to a standstill. Although I intend to approach this essay in a balanced manner, this essay may be subject to a small degree of bias, due to my own non-religious viewpoint.
