The topic of outliers for scatter plots can be a confusing and a topic that is specific to a person’s interpretation. The point of (1300, 20), is not considered an outlier due to the point being part of the overall pattern. Outliers are considered “striking deviation from the overall pattern” (Gerstman, 2015, p. 334). The point (1300, 20), is an element of the positive association of the scatter plot. Different people may interpret a scatter plot in different ways. An excellent example is how you interpreted the point to be an outlier. However, the textbook stated that there was no outlier to the data set. This is a confusing component of interpreting a scatter plot; it is up to the reader’s interpretation. Excellent question, I hope this clarified
Every single person on earth has gone through the stage of middle childhood in their lives; it is inevitable. This stage is an important time in an individual’s life as it provides them the opportunity to experience new challenges and to make new friends and relationships. Middle childhood is a time of slow yet steady growth of a person in the aspects of physical, mental, and emotional development. In the movie The Sandlot, the young boys show visible signs of school-age development which include the concept of self-esteem, showing interests in the opposite sex, and overcoming challenges. While there are many other things that imply development in school-age children, these three topics are the most prominent in the film.
“A statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the others of the sample” (Gladwell 3) or in other words an outlier. In the novel Outliers: The Story of Success, author Malcolm Gladwell holds one of the many secrets to life, the secret to success. Gladwell takes one’s thoughts on an astonishing journey to reveal the keys to success, their patterns, and how to achieve it.
Much of society mistakenly interchanges the two concepts of crime and deviance, assuming that they are one in the same. "A crime is what the law proclaims it to be, and is an act punishable by law" (Winterdyk 9). Deviance, on the other hand, is a contested concept; it can be defined as differing from a norm or accepted standard of society (dictionary.com). Deviance involves acts that fluctuate from social norms; although such actions can be, they are not necessarily against the law (Winterdyk 9).
The definition of success varies around the world, but according to Malcolm Gladwell its achievement can be broken down into a few components. Although Gladwell never truly establishes credibility in his book Outliers, he still backs up his proposed theories with reputable studies and sources which intrigue the audience to keep reading. The purpose of Outliers was to enlighten people about the different elements of success while also informing them of real life situations where seemingly less than likely people beat the odds and became the powerful figures that they are today. The intended audience is anyone who is looking to become successful or who is perhaps interested in the idea of success itself and wishes to learn more about it. Understandably, a secondary audience could be high school students who are about to venture out into the world on their own because with this book they will hopefully start paying attention to different factors of their lives and seizing opportunities that they may have otherwise passed up. Malcolm Gladwell talks about the 10,000 Hour Rule and also how I.Q. does not amount to much without creativity. He also speaks of how chance opportunity comes into play and that the distant background of a person still reflects how they handle situations in their present day life. Gladwell’s Outliers successfully informs the reader about the different components that add up to success with probable theories and credible studies to make for an interesting and motivational read.
An Outlier is considered to be an individual that stands out in society because they do things out of the ordinary or norm. They are considered to be successful or different in a positive way in society. For example, people with high IQs like Albert Einstein, famous musicians like Mozart, and etc. are considered to be Outliers
Scatter plots are similar to line graphs in that they both use horizontal and vertical axes to plot data points. The closer the data aims to making a straight line, the higher the correlation between the two variables, or the stronger the relationship(MSTE,n.d) The scatter plot above does not have a straight line formation, so that showing that there is not a strong relationship between the two variables of GPA and final.
What the students discovered from the histogram from this year was that firstly the score was noticeably higher than the ones seen in the previous year. And that the scores though not having as many replicates did have a much high percentage of people in the high end of the spectrum.
Societies are founded on various social norms. Norms can best be defined as a set of acceptable attitudes and practices by a given society. These norms however are found to vary from one society or cultural setting o the other. Deviance on the other hand is simply when one does something that goes against the set societal norms. Deviance is gauged on a scale of attitudes and behavior contradicting to acceptable social standards (Samuels, 2012).
Stephen Steinberg makes a good point, when having been at the right place, right time, to gain an investment opportunity. In the book, Outliers, Steinberg says that “There is no doubt that those Jewish immigrants arrived at the perfect time, with the perfect skills,” says sociologist Stephen Steinberg. “To exploit that opportunity, you had to have certain and those immigrants worked hard. They sacrificed. They scrimped and saved and invested wisely. But still, you have to remember that the garment industry in those years was growing by leaps and bounds. The economy was desperate for the skills that they possessed.”(145). I agree. I agree the being there at the right place and time can lead to possible unique opportunities. For example a man
The ideas presented in Outliers are surprisingly aligned with my own. It makes sense to me that a person’s success isn’t all about ability and his or her individual merit. In the past I have reflected upon my successes to find that I was not alone while achieving them. I have been given tremendous opportunities in life. I have always challenged my own definitions, and I like the spin Malcolm Gladwell puts on his.
Then, a scatterplot was formed with the data (Figure 3). It was a crucial graph as it helped determine the outliers in the information (see Appendix D for the outlier chart). Some of these outliers were located in towns with really low population numbers (the average population for an American city or town is around 20000)
Abnormal behavior is behavior that is dissimilar from what we call normal or a behavior that is not united by the preponderance of the population. Mental illness such as bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia are form of abnormal behavior. Abnormal behavior is of doing things differently from others in which other might think of as “weird”. For example, if someone tries to act in certain way like being funny some people would think of it as being abnormal. It’s the societies that have drawn a line between what is normal and what is abnormal? Even though some behaviors aren’t abnormal but people would still consider it on abnormal behavior. According the people some behaviors they perform might not see as abnormal but for some people the same behavior might seen as abnormal behavior. There was a student in one of my class whenever he would come to class he would properly clean his desk before he sit on it. For some people this kind of behavior would be normal and for some people it might be abnormal behavior. However, due to that sometimes it gets hard to describe what is abnormal behavior? The same way people think about abnormal behavior due to the way some people are behaving however, if we put our attention toward culture. There are different cultures presenting all around the world. Some people would find other people culture odd or the way it being performed are not accepted by different
The class had to use scatter plots in this assignment. We needed these plots to find the coefficient of correlation which was represented by R2. The rating percentage index was used along with another set of data to find the correlation coefficient which was represent by R. The correlation coefficient had to be a moderate correlation to use the unit as your main unit in your calculations. When you used the unit in your equation, you had to fill out a bracket after your calculations of all 64 teams in March Madness. I ended up doing the three point field goal attempts as my unit to match up with the RPI.
The scattergram is like a graph or a bar chart, having a x and y at right angles to one another. In this case, the x axis represents one variable, while the y axis represents the second variable. The points on the scattergram are obtained by taking related measurements of the two variables. They might be related by being taken at the same time, or by coming from the same research participant, or in some other way; but they always represent a pair of scores. Each of these paired measurements is plotted on the scattergram, using a cross or an asterisk. It is not necessary to join up the points with lines, because t...
... should care about outliers. They are the ones whose achievements create opportunities for other people. The society may not have these chances, if not for them. As a society, people should encourage others to do their best and work hard to accomplish their goals. They should study and gain intellect on the world around them. Society should provide more opportunities to kids today that will help them become an outlier. When they see a potential outlier they can create special programs to influence them to use their talent. They should encourage kids to try their best, to strive to succeed and not to give up on the first trial. Parents can set up special awards for kids who try hard like going to an amusement park or eating at their favorite restaurant as an incentive to work hard. Working hard with the right incentive will create successful, high achieving outliers.
