How Can We Do Better?
“Our Schools Must Do Better” written by author Bob Herbert attempts to persuade the audience that the public education system is falling behind the times and needs a complete overhaul in order to keep up with the rapidly changing times and technology. He accomplishes this by employing anecdotes and using emotional appeal to capture the audience 's attention as well as an authoritative tone throughout the essay. Although the introduction was eye catching and some might argue persuasive the disorganization and lack of supporting detail left much to be desired.
Herbert begins his essay with a false cause fallacy when he shares an experience he had with a high school aged student. The student could not answer the question “who is the sitting vice president of the United States?” Herbert argued that because the child could not answer this question the public education system is failing. It’s worth noting that Herbert does not reveal how he knows where, and in what manner, this particular child was educated. Furthermore, the author provides no logical relationship between this single student 's response and how it is indicative of every other publicly educated child in the United

Herbert offered an educated and applicable professional opinion. Both the author and Professor Kane used professional language and an authoritative tone. From the student not knowing the vice president 's name to declaring “They need something better than a post-World War II system in a post 9/11 world.” Herbert relied heavily on emotional appeal and fallacies to make key points that ultimately weakened his argument and damaged his credibility. Furthermore, it would have been a beneficial addition to the essay for Herbert to recognize that whilst teachers and administration play an important role in the education system, students are also responsible, and should be held accountable for their
Education is one of the most widely debated issues of our country in this current day and age. Many people feel as though schooling is biased and unfair to certain students; meanwhile, others feel as though the schooling systems are not serious enough in order to properly educate students to prepare them for their futures. The three texts that will be discussed, are all well written controversial essays that use a great deal of rhetorical appeals which help readers relate to the topics being discussed. In the essay “School,” Mori manages to specify her views on how different modern education is in America as to Japan; meanwhile, in “A Talk to Teachers,” Baldwin presents his argument as to how all children, no matter
The article "Let`s Really Reform Our Schools" by Anita Garland discuss the trouble faced by American High Schools. According to her, students are more concerned about their looks than learning, and this results in poor academic performance. She states that there is a need for American High Schools to be completely restructured. The worst students must be kicked out of the schools because they are troublemakers, and they distract others, which includes their fellow students, teachers, and administrators. Troublemakers lack fear of suspension from school, and suspension from school doesn’t improve their behavior. Troublemakers do not care about punishments at all. After all, they don’t want to be in the school, and they are not learning anything
In the article “Against School”, John Taylor Gatto urges Americans to see the school system as it really is: testing facilities for young minds, with teachers who are pounding into student 's brains what society wants. Gatto first explains that he taught for 30 years at the best and worst schools in Manhattan. He claims to have firsthand experience of the boredom that students and teachers struggle with. Gatto believes that schooling is not necessary, and there are many successful people that were self-educated. He then explains the history and importance of mandatory schooling.
Botstein once argued in his book Jefferson’s Children that “the American high school are obsolete”. In detail, the dissemination that the current method of education has entirely strangled the scheme is an important issue which has to be scrutinized critically.
-- Public eduction is one of the most significant and unfinished achievements in American history. The main point of the first video was to show the viewer how far public schools have come and how far they still need to go.
John Taylor Gatto, who was a teacher at the public school for twenty-six years, and the writer of the essay “Against School” that first appeared in Harper’s magazine in 2001, censures and blames the American public school’s educational system in his argumentative essay with various convincible supporting ideas. Gatto argues that the demands of public education system’s schooling are essential problems in “Against School”. Gatto shows some positive examples of the educating without forced schooling and shows models of the ‘success without forced modern schooling’. Indeed, the writer insists that historically forced schooling is not related to intellectual and financial success in American history. James Bryant Conant, who was the twenty-third
In the text, The Death and Life of the Great American School System, author Diane Ravitch explores her ideological shift on school reform and the empirical evidence that caused this shift. Once a proponent and contributor of testing, accountability, choice, and market reforms, Ravitch’s support began to diminish as she realized that these current reforms were not viable options. She came to realize that the new school reforms focused entirely on structural and managerial adjustments and that no focus was given to actual learning.
Within the walls of our educational system lie many adverse problems. Is there a solution to such problems? If so, what is the solution? As we take a look at two different essays by two different authors’ John Gatto and Alfie Kohn, both highlight what’s wrong within our educational system in today’s society. As John Gatto explores the concept if schools are really as necessary as they’re made out to be; Alfie Kohn analyzes the non-importance of letter grades within our schools. Although both essays are fairly different, they still pose some similarities in relation to the educational system in today’s society.
It has never been hard for anyone to find, what they would believe to be, flaws in our educational system. Even the articles “Hirsch’s Desire for a National Curriculum” by Eugene F. Provenzo Jr., “Studies Explore Whether the Internet Makes Students Better Writers,” by Josh Keller, and “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong,” by James W. Loewen are all obviously focused around problems the writers have found with the ways students are being taught. Although every article clearly discusses several concerns for our nations educational system and the way our students are learning, not one of the authors take into serious consideration the opinions, concerns, or feedback from the actual students. Nor do authors acknowledge whether the students are happy or not with their own education and the way they learn.
Many individuals have been affected negatively by trouble makers in school. Troublemakers have either disrupted classes or bullied other students. Yes, trouble makers may harm one’s learning environment, but should they be kicked out of school? Though many individuals argue that troublemakers will not change and hold the class down, they should not be kicked out because they need help. Most of these kids that are disobedient do not know the distinction between right and wrong. We should not withdraw trouble makers from school, rather, we should help these troublemakers and teach them right from wrong. In the article “Let’s Really Reform Our Schools” by Anita Garland, she states that American high schools are disasters because there are troublemakers (694). She asserts that the withdrawal of troublemakers in schools would make the learning environment peaceful for students who want to learn
James Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything your American Text Book Got Wrong, wrote about the grim nature of the American educational system. Loewen spent a couple of years gathering intimate details about twelve American history textbooks. In his search, he found convoluted truths of what it means to be a patriot, and worst of all, the misrepresentation of the truth in the educational system. We must think about why a government would want to mislead its people, like in the case of the 1954 Iranian Coup orchestrated by the CIA. Perhaps it is comfort in knowing that all of the conflicts we’ve been involved in are reasonably sound, to remove our abilities to think critically, or to rightfully be proud of a bloody
How to improve the K-12 education system in the United States of America has been a very discursive issue over the past few decades which have caused many debates and discussions. While researching on this topic I discovered a couple of effective ways to improve this system from various publishers and authors explaining the solutions on how we can improve the educational system as we can clearly see that other countries K-12 systems have improved drastically over the past years such as the Canada, France, Austria and Ireland and that America is below average when it comes to education. The publishers mainly focus on discussing and evaluating the important methods to create a better system in the United States by relating it to the factors and achievements of the current system. My main focus in this essay is to outline the factors on how to improve education by relating it to five different educational sources that I have found within different publishers and websites. By this method we can easily spot how each publisher has a diverse idea on refining this current generation’s schooling. (http://educationnext.org/whystudentsinsomecountriesdobetter/)
The School by Donald Barthelme is a short story that proposes the significance of life in front of its reader in the most absurd way possible. Fiction is a story that is not true whereas non-fiction is a tale based on real time. But what genre would best suit this short story by Donald? A fiction because it seems so unrealistic and depressing or a nonfiction because it conveys the true message of life through unusual occurrences of the deaths and life. The School should be considered a non-fiction because it states death is inevitable, life is unpredictable and love is all we need.
Educators attempt to change that system to make it better, but their change was not that great as an example for the world. Also, did that change qualify education systems to compete with other systems or not? Some examples and reasons have made me agree with some of the points from Gatto’s and Edmunson’s and disagree with them. John Taylor Gatto, in his essay “Against School: How Public Education Cripples our Kids, and why,” argues that the contemporary purpose of education in public schools is to produce “harmless electorate,” “a servile labor force,” and “mindless consumers” (28). According to Gatto, he is blaming public schools for claiming that the purpose of education is to shape students to certain expectations and habits without their interests.
...her ups, and then once their ideas of education update, so can school systems, then teachers themselves. Maiers “Keys to Student Engagement” shows the raw potential that school systems already have. It also shows that students need the drive and ambition to succeed. Tristan’s article on edutopia provides ideas that are already in motion. His ideas and tips have already started to work in public high school in his community. With the guidance and vision of these three authors public school issues could cease to exist. Even though there’s a lot involved getting administrators (and some teachers) on board, it is possible, and in the near future, a reality.
