“Our Native Tongue” is a short article written by Nelson W. Aldrich. Jr, in February 2000. To begin the article Aldrich describes how privileged and grateful he is to know the English language. Aldrich says “I’d been born with a silver tongue in my mouth.” From this statement, readers can assume how amazing the English language is. Silver is an item most people value, Aldrich values English the way some would value silver. Aldrich also says because he knows the English language he has access to many opportunities, that others would have to pay for because they do not know the English language. The article also discusses the first global lingua franca. Lingua franca is “the language of science, business, political, and finical power, and English”. Lingua franca is also a diammoniate language that is accepted between speakers whose languages are different. …show more content…
Next, Aldrich talks about the cost of others who must learn English.
According to Aldrich the cost of learning English is “twofold”. First, someone must teach the language and that is paid by the learner or the school system. However, only few minority’s in the world can afford to be tough the English language. The seconded cost of learning English are the people who never learn English, these are individuals who “stay behind” according to Aldrich. The people who “stay behind” consist of individuals who live in subverted cultures. Last, are people who become “brain drain”. “Brain drain” is the consequence of New technology. Younger generations become “brain drain” because of the many short cuts used in technology. At such a young age these individuals may not see the importance of the English language, they also may not understand how unique English is. Brain drain has caused younger generations to communicate and learn English improperly because they were not taught the right way to use English because of the new
technology. This article is well written. The article taught me a variety of new information. I learned about Lingua Franca before reading this article, I have never heard about Lingua Franca. I learned lingua franca is a dominate language that brings people together as one. I also learned that lingua franca is the langue of science and business, political, and finical power. I also learned many people pay to learn something that I may take for granted at times. Reading this article has also brought to my attention how technology such as texting and social media has ruined the English language for younger generations. Texting and social media has brain drained younger generations because of all the short cuts used in texting and social media. For example, in a text message a person in the younger generation might use the letter u instead of spelling the word you. This is only one consequence of being brain drained. Overall, the article is well written and taught me a variety of new information.
Even though the dominance of a language can allow for the loss of a culture, it can also bring awareness. In schools, local community centers and other various places, foreign languages are taught, not only do non-native speakers take on these languages but native speakers do as well to keep their culture. By doing so it “revitalizes cultures and cultural artifacts through foreign influences, technologies, and markets.” (Gerdes
Most people who grow up with a foreign language spoken in there house grow up with an advantage in society. This advantage can only occur once the individual learning that foreign language also learns the dominant language spoken in that country. Once both of these languages are learned and mastered, the individual has now placed them se...
Today, Amy Tan, author of novels, children’s book, and autobiographies, has become one of America’s favorite novelists. In the essay “Mother Tongue” Amy Tan, the author, gives a different, a more upbeat outlook on the various forms of English that immigrants speak as they adapt to the American culture. Using simple language to develop her argument, she casually communicates to the audience rather than informing which helps the audience understand what is being presented at ease. Her mother plays an important role in her outlook of language, because she helps her realize that language not only allows one to be a part of a culture but create one’s identity in society. Amy Tan shares her real life stories about cultural racism and the struggle to survive in America as an immigrant without showing any emotions, which is a wonderful epiphany for the audience in realizing
The statistics of those not speaking English could lead to the idea that English is diminishing in certain sections of the United States. An example of this is shown in the article “Why the U.S. Needs an Official Languag...
America is a melting pot; it is filled with people with different backgrounds. Many people settled here in America as an immigrant to have more opportunities to start a better life. Many people came here with nothing but their cultures, knowledge, beliefs and behaviors which they shared amongst others in society. In society, starting with the earlier generation there was shared culture of classes, although everyone portrays immigrants as the lowest class. They are always disliked particularly for coming here as an immigrant, even though most people have very similar backgrounds whether they want to admit it or not. It is how one holds themselves in society. People are divided into different classes and are treated
The first, that we currently live in a highly globalized society and importance should be placed both on an appreciation for varying cultures and that children should be provided with as many marketable skills as possible. The second, that in this globalized marketplace the onus is on non-English speakers to learn English due to the subconscious (and in some cases not so subconscious) belief in the superiority of America and thusly English. [Something about xenophobia maybe]
The United States is made up of multiple cultures, race, and languages. Many people come from Mexico or Asian parts of the world, like China in search for a better life. One of the struggles many people have when coming from a different country is the language, in this case English. Everyone has a unique way of communicating. In the United States, after people learn English they realize they use different Englishes without knowing, in order to communicate, whether it be with parents, professors, or your own pets.
Summary - A. Tan: In Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue,” she explains the different Englishes she uses throughout her day. Using anecdotal examples, Tan confronts the disrespect most Americans have for “broken” English speakers and their disregard for language barriers. She questions the education system, through her perspective an immigrant’s child, that pushes Asian-Americans towards STEM. Throughout her work, Tan weaves in her journey as an Asian-American writer.
The article Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan is a personal look into how language, and the dialects of that language, can affect a person 's life. It 's a look into how the people inside the cultural circles who use dialect derivatives of a major language are treated by people who exist outside of those cultural circles. It shows us how society treats a person using a "broken" or "limited" dialect, and how society 's treatment of these people can also affect the children who grow up using these "broken" dialects. Tan wrote this article try and convey to the reader that English is a colorful, and ever-changing language that has many dialects. Tan makes the point, several times throughout the article, that society judges you based on the type of English that you use. Throughout the article, Tan uses both her mother, herself and society 's treatment of them as evidence to support her idea. The purpose of pointing this out is to show the reader that the language a person uses, whether it be taught to them in school or by a parent at home, isn 't indicative of a person 's intelligence or value, and they shouldn 't be judged as less for using it.
Not Only English: Affirming America's Multilingual Heritage. 1990. The. ERIC. Web. The Web.
In today’s society, especially in the United States, most people are monolingual English speakers. As a result, these monolingual speakers are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who speak more than one language fluently. This disadvantage is crucial to realize since it is important to learn how individuals and the nation can be enhanced. Multilingual speakers have an advantage in global affairs that involve countries that speak different languages. Speaking multiple languages makes it easier to communicate with people when involved in foreign affairs. Those who speak multiple languages are also more aware of other cultures in society. Monolingual speakers are not as exposed to other cultures and have difficulty understanding or even recognizing them. Furthermore, being multilingual increases your
It has been adopted by different sectors making it one of the most used languages in the globe. This has been attributed to its effective nature, easy learning and rich history. However, conservative groups exist who argues that there should be global language since it may cause the emergence of superior cultures. Nevertheless, it is evident that different cultures ranging from the early polish immigrants, the African American community, the advertising and media will greatly benefit from the globalization of the English language. This will prove in the end that English is indeed a global
International students may be sent to America to study, speak, write and read in English but the chance of encountering difficulties and struggles is high. According to researchers, learning English in America especially for foreign students is a difficult decision because one may not be able to become accustomed to the environment, behavior of difference culture and the acts of other around. English learners will also encounter reading disability because one cannot read English in a short time; additionally, international students usually struggle with reading English even though one may have the knowledge of the English language. No matter how many disadvantage the English language has, the world most common language will not be extinct because jobs, education and many other parts of the world use English as a primary

It has become the language that is spoken by millions of people all over the world; as the mother tongue, as the language used for international communication and as the language learned in the millions of schools.
