You can use her; you can leave her; she never fights back. Throughout Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Ophelia is repeatedly used like an object. She never tries to defend herself, just stands there and takes what is thrown at her. Ophelia’s obedience has morphed her into a toy, used by her own father, Hamlet, and even nature itself.
After being verbally abused by the man she loves, there is no sympathy from her own father. Polonius just tells his daughter he and the King heard it all, that she should not worry about explaining: "—How now, Ophelia? You need not tell us what Lord Hamlet said, we heard it all—My Lord do as you please..." (3.1.174-176). In act three, he tells her to go to a nunnery because a woman like her should not have children who would just be sinners: "Get thee to a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners?" (3.1.119-120), Hamlet chooses to turn his anger on Ophelia most likely because she returned the gifts he gave her and denied his love. Throughout these accusations, Ophelia simply seems to feel worried towards his way of acting. She chooses to not talk back to Hamlet in a rude manner much, less defend herself.____ Any other girl would say something back if told she is not worthy of having children, but she does not because she is doing what her father ordered her to. Gertrude explained that Ophelia 's heavy clothes pulled her down deep into the stream:"...her garments, heavy with their drink, pulled the poor wretch from her melodious lay to muddy death" (4.7. 178-181). Even in her last moments, Ophelia lets a greater power do as it pleases with herself. Instead of screaming for help and struggling to breath, she just sings a song while she is still floating on the surface. Nature chooses when she can take her last breath. Ophelia is a character in Hamlet that is chronically faithful to everyone else but herself. Ophelia is deeply in love with Hamlet, and she is certain that he loves her as well. This is clear from the assertions she makes in Hamlet’s defense: “My lord, he hath importuned me with love in honest fashion. Just following this passage comes a place in the text where we can see how the character of Ophelia has been manipulated by Polonius. After his "hint" that he might be doing this out of frustrated love, Ophelia says that that is what she truly does fear. (87) Her feelings of pity and concern are shaped by her father in order to fit his case of madness against Hamlet.

In 1600, William Shakespeare composed what is considered the greatest tragedy of all time, Hamlet, the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark. His masterpiece forever redefined what tragedy should be. Critics have analyzed it word for word for nearly four hundred years, with each generation appreciating Hamlet in its own way. While Hamlet conforms, without a doubt, to Aristotle's definition of a tragedy, one question still lingers. Did Shakespeare intend for the reader or viewer of Hamlet to feel greater sympathy for Hamlet, or for Ophelia, Hamlet's lover? Both characters tug at the heartstrings throughout the play, but it is clear that 'the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark' is a misrepresentation of Shakespeare's true intention.
Hamlet treats Ophelia like property and because he does not care for her. This is proven because he insults Ophelia, uses her to get his revenge on Claudius and uses her as a way to get attention. To begin with, Hamlet abuses Ophelia by accusing her of having impure motives. To him she “jig[s]… amble and …lisp” (3.1.145) to seduce other men. He also accuses her of being deceitful because she changes the “one face [that]…God hath given” to her by putting on cosmetics. Hamlet verbally abuses Ophelia because he believes that she is worthless. Hamlet is not concerned about the effect that these insult have on Ophelia’s psyche. In addition to verbally abusing Ophelia, Hamlet uses Ophelia as a pawn. Hamlet uses Ophelia as a way to get to Claudius by also physically abusing her. Ophelia description of Hamlet’s abuse exhibits Hamlet’s unruly behaviour towards her: “He took me by the wrist and held me hard; then goes he to the length of all his arm” (2.1.88-89). Hamlet physically abuses Ophelia because he knows that Ophelia will report it to her father who in turn will tell Claudius. By doing this, Claudius will think Hamlet is insane and will then lower his guard and will not suspect that Hamlet intents to kill him. In Hamlet, Ophelia is unaware of the evil is spreading around her. She is an obedient woman, and is naive in that she takes what people say at face value, which makes her an innocent lady. "You should not have believed me, for virtue/ cannot so inculate our old stock but we shall relish of/ it. I loved you not." (III.ii. 117-119). Hamlet says these lines as a mask of his madness, but Ophelia does not understand his true motives and takes Hamlet's words very seriously to heart. Despite Ophelia’s weak will, the male characters respond dramatically to her actions, proving that women indeed have a large impact in Hamlet. As the daughter of Polonius, she only speaks in the company of several men, or directly to her brother or father. Since we never see her interactions with women, she suppresses her own thoughts in order to please her superiors. This is unhealthy for both of them and Hamlet is very angry after the confrontation and Ophelia is disappointed in herself greatly. In the end the strain is too much for Ophelia, her body is discovered in a shallow pond from an apparent suicide. The final straw that set her off was the fact that hamlet killed her father. At this point she's lost everything.
