Good morning/ Afternoon Teacher I am Rachel Perkins And I was asked by The Australian Film Institute to be here to today to talk about my musical. My musical One Night The Moon which was the winner of the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Cinematography in a Non-Feature Film in 2001. I am also here to talk about how distinctive voices are used to show the experiences of others. The voices of Albert and Jim are two characters that give us two different perspectives this is due to their views. Albert one of the characters in my film is an Aboriginal character played by Kenton Pell who is hired by the police as a tracker. Albert is a very deeply spiritual person this gave him a spiritual voice throughout the play but when he get 's kick off the land and banned from the search the gets frustrated which gave him this really emotional voice. This event has a greater meaning which I will elaborate on later and now Onto Jim. Jim is your 1930s white Australian that owns a farm and is going through tough times because of the Great depression. Jim does not allow Albert to find his daughter, This is due to his racist and prejudiced views of black Australians. Jim has an authorial voice because he see’s himself as inferior. Near to the end of …show more content…
In the being of the musical, Albert had a spiritual voice we saw this through his link to the land this towards the end of the play he stayed to have more of an emotional voice of frustration and he sees this as his experience of unwantedness by the white Australians. This will hopefully give you an insight on how aboriginals were treated in the
In Australia the Aboriginals face discrimination daily. The film opened with four young Aboriginal girls singing on a makeshift stage facing their community. When the camera panned to show the smiling faces in the crowd it gave a feel of unity and love. Later it showed two sisters who were trying to hitch a ride into the city from the main road. Yet every vehicle passed them by; once they saw who they were, frustrated the older sister. Gale stated it was because they ‘were black’. When in the town playing their song on the stage in a bar, the youngest sister turned up and took
Traditionally film clips are developed to be attached to a song with the aim of emphasising a particular message that is found in the lyrics. The words in the song “black fella, white fella” include a variety of language features that are designed to reinforce the importance of values to the listeners. The first feature that can be seen is the use of repetition. An example from the song is evident in the chorus where the words “are you the one” are repeated four times. This technique is used in conjunction with asking rhetorical questions to the listeners. An example of these questions “are you the one that’s going to stand up and be counted?”. These two techniques are used to provide responsibility to
Throughout the story “Walk Two Moons” written by Sharon Creech, Mrs.Winterbottom is faced with internal and external conflicts that lead her to change.
Though the film mentioned the impact that residential schools had and still has on the aboriginal people, I felt that this issue needed to be stressed further because the legacy of the schools is still extremely prominent in aboriginal communities today. The film refers to the fact that residential schools harmed the aboriginal people because they were not able to learn their culture, which has resulted in the formation of internalized oppression within in the group. “The...
Tribal Voice by Yothu Yindi is a song which incorporates perspective about how aboriginals were treated badly and cast out and that they should all stand up to take back what is theirs . This song is an aboriginal perceptive that they were treated badly though they gave the people of Australia home, even though they get no rewards or thanks. This song represents the aboriginal thinking of colonised Australia saying it wasn’t fair to themselves and their children as they took care of the land and it was just taken away and they were cast out. The indigenous people are still dreaming for a day that they can be fully welcomed back into society, but they now are going to speak for themselves and do whatever it takes so that the future generation of aboriginal culture have a better future.
One Night the Moon (2001), is based on the events that took place in the harsh Australian outback in the early 1930s. The film evolves when a young girl, Emily, goes missing into the mountainous terrain of the Australian outback one night to follow the moon. Her family, European settlers, though desperate to find her, fail to employ the skills of a local Indigenous tracker, Albert Riley, due to their own racism. Perkins uses many literary elements such as camera angles, music, dialogue and editing to shape meaning and to influence her audience. One Night the Moon, introduces song into the Australian landscape, Indigenous people have always used song to talk about the land, and song itself has always been one of the central means of land management. One Night the Moon has been described as “A beautiful, seemless film with the ability to transport the audience.” Perkins endorses the idea that White settlers have failed to learn anything from the original inhabitants of this land and to support this statement, she layers the literary elements to highlight the racism, connection with the land and also contrasts the two male protagonists in the film.
Rachel Perkins hybrid musical drama One Night the Moon set in the 1930’s Australian outback and Malala Yousafzai’s ‘speech to the UN’ in 2013 were composed to raise awareness and reveal truths of multiple perspectives, representing the voice of the unheard and disempowered in juxtaposition to the dominant and powerful. Both Perkins and Yousafzai challenge societal expectations of their context, advocating for all voices to be heard and for the potential unity between cultures and races through education and shifts in paradigm.
... Through the use of story and characterization, Noyce accurately depicts the theme of racism as a prominent element of the film and also shows the audience the deep-seated attitudes towards the Aboriginal culture in Australia in the 1930s.The film convinces us that racism
The story begins in the Middle Kingdom which is what the Chinese people call China. Moon Shadow is afraid of the demons, which is what they call Americans. Moon Shadow is afraid of demons because his mother told him about how the demons lynched his grandfather. Moon Shadow’s mother doesn’t like to answer his questions about America. The Tang people refer America as the Land of the Golden Mountain. Moon Shadow has never met his father and the people in the village call him a maker of marvelous kites. Moon Shadow gets to finally go to America because his cousin, Hand Clap brought a letter from his father. Hand Clap tells Moon Shadow about the demons and how mean they are. Moon Shadow arrives in America and he arrives in the Company building.
Celestial objects have amazed the human race ever since history started being recorded. The moon, the stars and all visible heavenly bodies have been studied for thousands of years, millions of people over the decades have dedicated their lives to researching these wondrous objects. The moon alone has been the subject of not only research but endless discoveries as well, and for many others, the moon was a goddess. According to Donald J. Frederick, ancient civilizations like the Mayans deemed the moon as a feminine entity, they worshipped the moon in order to get pregnant. The Greeks called the goddess of the moon by the name Selene, and also adored it. Copious other ancient civilizations saw the moon with great reverence as well. Others have taken the time to decode what ancient writings say of the heavenly spheres, the Bible specifies that the moon, sun, and the stars are used by God to mark the different seasons. According to Dennis McCarthy from the U.S. Naval Observatory, to be able to distinguish between seasons, one uses the location of the sun with respect to the stars, to be able to tell from day and night, one uses the rising and setting of the sun, and to be able to tell between months, one uses the phases of the moon. In that respect it can be assumed that the Bible, which was written more than two thousand years ago, was indeed, correct. But what about the portions that say that those same celestial bodies are used by God as divine signs?
The Walk Two Moon books is one of my favorite book, and interested story as well. Throughout both ‘Rainbow’s End’ and ‘The Rabbits’, the audience discovers the plights that the Aboriginal Australians faced, due to discrimination and assimilation, in intensely confronting, yet intensely meaningful ways. We see how the discrimination and forced assimilation of cultures was common in the lead up to modern times because of composers like Harrison, Marsden and Tan reminding us of these events, allowing us to discover and rediscover our past wrongs through their works, in order to pave the way for a brighter, harmonious future. Without these documentations and retellings of events such as these, history would repeat itself, conflicts would be more apparent and we as a species would not be able to thrive and prosper due to our prejudices and superiority complexes.
The musical selections and songs that were sung told a story and narrated the almost the entire film, as is expected in...
Title: Phases and Eclipses of the Moon. Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate the different phases of the moon during its revolution around the earth and also to display solar and lunar eclipses. Hypothesis: I think that by following the procedure, I will successfully complete this lab in showing the phases of the moon throughout its revolution and the solar and lunar eclipses because I am moving the moon correctly.
The moon has two sides, the side that is ever illuminated by the sun, and the side we see, and then there is the dark side; forever cast into the shadows, never to see earth, nor be seen by earth. Similar to the moon, humans never merely have one side but are multifaceted. The character Salome has many different sides, and even more that the characters of the play see, though all the characters do see Salome in the moon. Herod originally only sees Salome as a beautiful erotic creature, however when she requests the head of The Prophet, he sees the corruption within her. He then realizes, “Only in mirrors is it well to look, for mirrors do but show us masks.” However, the moon acts as a mirror for Salome, reflecting to each character a different mask.
