I selected an international business article from The Wall Street Journal titled “McDonald’s, Pizza Hut Cook Up New Plans for India” for my article summary assignment. This article is relevant to our course because it covers American fast food companies expanding in India. In order to be successful in foreign markets, it requires adjusting to the foreign country’s culture and customs in order to be successful in a global market. It also requires innovation and adaption to serve the local people in foreign countries, and they need strategies and a vision to address current trends and local competition.
The article discusses how the international fast food chains once blazed the trail in India when they arrived about “15 years ago” (Rana). During this time, the big global brands such as Domino’s Pizza, McDonald’s, and Yum Brands that includes Pizza Hut and KFC built too many stores due to the anticipation of a larger growth. McDonald’s share in India’s fast food market slid from 38% in 2009 to 26% in 2014, and Pizza Hut’s share in the pizza chain market slumped from 31% to 18%” (Rana). In order to address this trend, the original chains are reinventing and restructuring to revive growth in India’s fast food market. They are doing this by overhauling menu items to address the culture and tastes of the people of India, and they are getting facelifts to compete with the new homegrown restaurants. Domino’s and Pizza Hut are both making changes by offering discounts, value items, and various tricks to improve their sales. From a study completed by Chicago-based Research International USA completed a study called “Fast Food Nation 2008. The panel consisted of 1,000 respondents of ages 16-65 who provided their inputs with an online survey which was conducted between March 13 through 2008. Which was based on results on fast food restaurants like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s are gaining popularity even through the economic hardship and recession. Marketing strategy has become more of influence on kids and young American’s. As population grows and the demand increases of fast food restaurants are expanding their stores to capturing more consumers. Fast food chains are also willing to change their menus to continue to gain and retain repeating customers. With each generation that passes, brings fast food chains into more homes and continues impacting lives.
McDonalds also uses diversification in its global marketing. McDonalds recognizes that different countries have different values, customs, and tastes. Therefore, McDonalds satisfies these diverse global tastes by diversifying the menu according to each country’s unique preferences. This added diversification tactic, allows McDonalds to stay competitive in a global market. Examples of McDonalds globally diversified menu would be that McDonalds offers an exclusive beefless menu to its customers who live in India. This is because eating beef in India is sacrilegious. To meet the tastes of customers in India, McDonalds created new offerings such as the “Pizza McPuff” and the “McVeggie.” McDonalds considers the cultural tastes in every country it opens its doors
McDonald’s workforce consist of 73 percent women and people of color making, 43 percent of them are franchise staff and 55 percent are suppliers; additionally, the company has two stores opening everyday in China (Singh, 2010). Domino’s Pizza Company was originally owned by Tom Monaghan and his brother James, first purchased as a mom and pop store in 1960 named Domi-Nick’s. Tom traded his car for the other half of the business in 1961, and changed the name of the store to Domino’s in 1965. Domino’s targets its sales toward middle and lower class customers that are looking to stretch their dollar and feed their family affordably. Although Domino’s has many positive aspects, it also has some downfalls. This essay will identify problems within the business, analyze what has to be done to address each issue, propose alternative solutions, and make recommendations for what Domino’s needs to do next.

Fast food restaurants are popular among the consumers nowadays. Many fast food restaurants are trying to serve the needs in the market as people seek for quick and convenient place to eat. Due to the fact that there are a huge amount of fast food chains available in the global market, fast food companies have to strive for success. Just by providing quick and convenient style of eating for the customers is not sufficient to stay competitive. This is why it is interesting to study and learn about a fast food company that stands out in such a competitive environment. What has KFC China been doing to become successful? What marketing strategies did they use to dominate the market? We shall find out in the following sections.
This particular case is about the implementation of the popular fast-food chain, Burger King, into the Japanese market. Despite its’ strong market position in other countries, Burger King has some difficulties to face within the Japanese market. It is essential to know that to what extend the company should keep the existing business model in emerging markets and to what extend it should be thrown away.
It will provide entrepreneurs with a competitive edge that will prove invaluable in helping them seek the opportunity in this unexplored area of business. Through this research project one can study the opportunities and potential for Fast Food Restaurant Services in India. Since not too much of research is carried on in this area in India, there is a huge scope for this market and it could be useful for any budding entrepreneur who is interested in this industry.

McDonald’s has been one of the biggest fast food chain corporations that has worldwide share in the food market. The company’s appeals were fast service, menu varieties, and affordability, which capture majority of customers’ psychological needs. Furthermore, McDonald successfully builds a relationship with consumer by promoting donation campaigns and vitally involving in societal activities. In recent years, McDonald’s sales decline is affected by food scandals causing public mistrust of its food ingredients, which deviates consumers from fast, cheap and convenient food.
To conclude culture is a very broad term, which can be defined in many ways. India and the USA share some of hofstede’s dimensions in common with each other, Such as masculinity and uncertainty avoidance. But also differ greatly when it comes to power distance and individualism dimensions. Coca-Cola does customize its operations to a certain degree, mainly concerning packaging and marketing in different countries. However this customization is next to nothing when looking at how extensively different fast food menus are in different countries. Coca-Cola has faced issues while operating in India, which they have taken measures to correct and improve.
India's ice cream industry offers a potentially lucrative market for US agricultural and food exporters. Trade liberalization in the country is driving the growth and diversification of the sector, with consumers given a wide range of ice cream flavors such as vanilla, strawberry, butterscotch and chocolate. High tariff rates and inefficient distribution systems continue to hamper the import market, but an increasingly affluent younger generation of consumers will likely boost the ice cream sales.
