Every child has a “monster” that follows them around. Some of them have messy hair and sharp teeth, some claw at the bed or hide under it, and some hide in the dark until children go to sleep. In Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein, she creates an image of a monster with scary looks, a lack of love, and a sense of violence. In Oscar Wilde’s, The Picture of Dorian Gray, he creates a monster throughout the progress of his book. He is quite different from Mary Shelley’s in that he is described as attractive, is overwhelmed with attention, although it is negative; however, also has a sense of violence. Because of The Creation’s looks he is shunned and treated horribly by the people around him. This leads to his horrible mistreatment towards him, which is one of the causes of his monstrous ways. In Frankenstein, Shelley writes about Victor Frankenstein running away from The Creation the second upon meeting him. This leaves The Creation with no one that will show him love or will care for him. He is lost and alone. Shelley uses this abandonment to shape the monster into a being that does not understand love, emotions, and feelings. Bond writes, “The consistent complaint of the monster in his narrative is thus that he is excluded from receiving any human affection, and is, instead, in receipt only of human aggression” (Bond). Bond is supporting the argument that The Creation is only the monster he is because he has not been taught to love. The tale of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, focuses on the outcome of one man's idealistic motives and desires of dabbling with nature, which result in the creation of horrific creature. Victor Frankenstein was not doomed to failure from his initial desire to overstep the natural bounds of human knowledge. Rather, it was his poor parenting of his progeny that lead to his creation's thirst for the vindication of his unjust life. In his idealism, Victor is blinded, and so the creation accuses him for delivering him into a world where he could not ever be entirely received by the people who inhabit it. Not only failing to foresee his faulty idealism, nearing the end of the tale, he embarks upon a final journey, consciously choosing to pursue his creation in vengeance, while admitting he himself that it may result in his own doom. The creation of an unloved being and the quest for the elixir of life holds Victor Frankenstein more accountable for his own death than the creation himself.
In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein the protagonist Victor Frankenstein creates a monster. The monster in the novel is deprived of a normal life due to his appearance. Like the creature, some serial killers today are killers due to the same rejection. As Frankenstein is enroute to his pursuit of gaining more knowledge, he states, “I wished, as it were, to procrastinate all that related to my feelings of affection until the great object, which swallowed up every habit of my nature, should be completed” (Shelley 41). Frankenstein’s decision in allowing his intellectual ambitions to overpower everything else in his life leads him to be blinded to the dangers of creating life. Throughout Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein pursues, with a passion lacking in other aspects of his life, his individual quest for knowledge and glory. He accepts the friendships and affections given him without reciprocating. The "creature," on the other hand, seems willing to return affections, bringing wood and clearing snow for the DeLaceys and desiring the love of others, but is unable to form human attachments. Neither the creature nor Victor fully understands the complex relationships between people and the expectations and responsibilities that accompany any relationship. A monster can be characterized by an extreme deviation from the normal standards of society including an internal or external wickedness. What is the definition of a monster, or to be monstrous? Is a monster the classic representation we know, green skin, neck bolts, grunting and groaning? The definition of ‘monstrosity’ and what it means to be ‘monstrous’ can be understood to mean something that is visually unattractive, malformed and/or terrifying. “The Picture of Dorian Gray” is a novel written by Oscar Wilde. The story takes place in England, where the artist Basil Hallward paints a portrait of the young and beautiful Dorian Gray. During his stay at the artist’s studio, he gets introduced to Lord Henry who later becomes one of the most influential people in his life. Dorian Gray becomes aware of his amazing beauty and youthfulness due to the portrait and wishes that the portrait ages instead of him. His wish comes true, Dorian remains beautiful and youthful while the portrait changes. Lord Henry becomes his best friend and motivates him to live in abundance, to sin and always strive for beauty. After a while, Dorian discovers that his portrait doesn’t only age, but also changes face expression as a result of all his sins and evil deeds. Dorian gets anxious by the fact that the portrait shows his evil soul and is scared that somebody will see it, therefore he hides it. The portrait haunts Dorian although it’s hidden. As Dorian’s sins gets worse, he feels that he can’t handle the pressure anymore and decides to destroy the portrait that shows his true self.
The novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde shows the life of three men who are affected by art in the Victorian society. In Victorian times men were expected to provide for himself and his family, accumulate wealth, exemplify good morals and prove his masculinity. That idea pushes both characters past the point of no return. Gray, believing in his own immortality, tests the strength of the magic in the art. The results are disastrous. Gray’s actions deform his soul, the image in the painting, and the image society has for him. Gray’s fear after seeing the painting again mirrors the artists desire to not display it: "the reason [he] will not exhibit th[e] picture is that [he is] afraid that [he has] shown in it the secret of [his] own soul" (Wilde 9). That fear is rightly assumed, because as the painting corrupts itself to mirror Gray’s actions, it further resembles the twisted and monstrous nature of his soul. Victor Frankenstein’s creature similarly reflects Frankenstein’s soul and his sins for others to see. The detest people show toward the creature also reflects the disgust one feels when faced with sin and corruption. These signs both show Frankenstein’s desire to become a god and his inability to complete that wish entirely. He isolates himself and cuts himself off from all human contact, causing a loss of emotion and an obsession for creating life to take over. Dorian says, “I don't wish to know anything about them. I love scandals about other people, but scandals about myself don't interest me.
