The Poem Annabel Lee, written by Edgar Allan Poe, told a tale of love. In this romantic poem the narrator emanates feelings of passion, and overwhelming joy when he speaks of his beloved, Annabel Lee. Although the poem expresses the sorrow of Annabel’s demise, it accentuates the bond between the two characters, so much so that death could not break their eternal love for one another (Poe, 494; 495). Many literary devices were apparent in Poe’s poem Annabel lee. One of which being Rhythm, Poe creates reading that flows, one that is constantly reusing similar sounds to interpret the beauty of the love between the two characters. Another literary element that was found in this poem was imagery. By composing a poem that uses words to describe the location and characters, Poe was able to implement imagery in his writing. The final literary element Poe conveyed in the poem was mood. Poe was able to express the element of mood by the words he used. The element of rhythm in Annabel Lee, was perhaps the most apparent. Poe used words that rhymed in the ending of most lines. Some words that rhymed …show more content…
Without the diverse styles of writing, all authors would be identical. The different literary elements used in this poem were, rhyming, imagery, and mood. Rhyming provided a style of reading that flowed and sounded beautiful, possibly to reflect the beauty of the narrator’s love for Annabel. The imagery used in the writing became a crucial part in identifying what characters and locations might look like, doing this allowed readers to imagine the love as being like a fairytale, and beautiful. Finally Poe used mood to convey the feelings of the narrator. Without the use of mood, the poem might allow readers to have no feelings toward situations or characters. The story of everlasting love, a love that death himself could not disintegrate, this was the poem of Annabel
Edgar Allan Poe’s poems The Raven, And Annabel Lee Contrast in many different ways but i'll be highlighting three of them in this paper. The mood of these poems is sad because their true loves die in very different settings and how they handle the grief is different from one going totally insane to the other man being calm and almost a little light hearted about it.
Edgar Allan Poe's view on poetry is that all poems must be a "rhythmical creation of beauty". In his eyes, melancholy and sadness is beautful. He thinks that the death of a young beautiful woman is itself full of beauty. In both "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven", Poe writes about this so-called beauty.
Annnabel Lee is a poem of two lovers, in their own world, living a perfect life. This poem reflects Poe 's own pain, in which Annabel Lee dies, and her lover is heartbroken.
In the poem, ?Annabel Lee?, the narrator (still unnamed) mourns the loss of HIS wife, Annabel Lee. But this poem has no bird. This poem has no living creature that takes away the narrator?s wife. This poem has angels. Jealous angels. Angels that wish to break the young love of the narrator and Annabel Lee. Poe states that their love can never be broken and in death of his wife, the narrator and Annabel Lee are still entwined by the soul. They met by the side of the sea and their Annabel Lee was buried in her tomb.
A mutual understanding towards many of Poe’s works is that the loss of a lover brings about insanity, but the truth is that in Poe’s works the loss of a young lover leads to depression. This is a theme that is played out in more than one of Poe’s works, but it is most prevalent in the depressing poem Annabel Lee. The speaker is conflicted with losing what is his whole world and his childhood lover. While all is well with both him and the girl alive, an insurmountable depression takes hold once the winds blow out to carry her to the grave. This is a theme that plays out often in his works and has been observed as one of his main inspirations. Within Peter Coviello’s research, he comes to the conclusion that “Within [Poe’s] world, only very young girls, who are not yet encumbered by the revulsions of adult femininity, seem capable of providing a site for stable heterosexual male desire in Poe.” Rather than using a full fledged adult as his lover, he engineered a child into his poem so the lover does not harness the potential to mutate into a monstros...
Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic. He made many great literary works such as, “Annabel Lee”, “The Raven” and “The Sphinx”. Poe had a bumpy life which made a huge influence of his literary works. In his many literary works, death, sickness, failure and lost love are the main themes. He is yearning for ideals and myths such as love and good life but the reality is cruel, it destroyed his normal life. Therefore, the author put his attitude and feelings about his life into his works, and he led readers into his story.
Throughout “Alone”, Poe uses various poetic devices to captivate his reader. For instance, Poe uses external rhyme throughout the poem, at the end of each pair of lines. Along with the use of rhyming, Poe also uses descriptive imagery. A m...
Edgar Allan Poe is highly known for his literature, in which he intended to frighten his readers and leave them with chills up their spines by inducing feelings of horror and terror. In one of Poe’s most famous poems “Annabel Lee”, he demonstrates the theme of love being accompanied by jealousy and loneliness, even after death by using repetition, mood and symbolism in a eerie and frightening fashion.
The poem “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allen Poe is a beautiful story that outlines events that happened between the speaker and his love. The story paints a mental picture of a love that is so strong that angels become jealous and take Annabel Lee away from the speaker, but even though she is gone, his love for her never ended. The story is full of imagery that leads to the central message of the story, which is love.
Along with imagery and symbolism, Poe incorporates many poetic elements to express his feeling. These include assonance, alliteration, and rhyme. Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds. For example ?For the race and radiant maiden, whom the angels name Lenore.? This repeats the vowel sound of ?a?. Poe also used a lot of alliteration. For example, ?Doubting dreaming dreams no mortal level, dared to dream before?. Notice the repetition of the ?d? sound. One last element used in ?The Raven? is rhyme.
The diction of “Annabel Lee” helps create the impression of a fairy tale-like love story. With words such as “maiden” (line 3), “kingdom” (line 8), “beautiful” (line 16), “high-born kinsmen” (line 17), Poe paints a picture of a whimsical, fantastic love story when, in reality, Annabel Lee dies in her girlhood. This is wherein lies the irony: the glamorization of the persona’s love of Annabel Lee
Edgar Allan Poe while uses repetition to show his message. The repetition of “ Annabel Lee” is used many times in the poem and Annabel Lee is his late wife who has unfortunately passed away and left him to mourn over her. Poe also repeats “ in the kingdom by the sea” many times. When he says “in a kingdom by the sea” he gives the feeling of majestic romance to the poem itself because he is talking about where they live. Poe uses conventional language in this particular poem but the poem has a melancholic and gloomy tone to it due to the fact
The repetition and rhythm of the poem make the power of his words even stronger. For example, the repetition of “my beautiful Annabel Lee” emphasizes the love he feels for Annabel Lee and helps you feel a stronger connection to their relationship. Some other good examples are the ones I mentioned in the paragraph before, about the narrator continuously has dreams about Annabel Lee and “all the night-tide, I lie down by the side / Of my darling--my darling--my life and my bride” both convey how strong his love for Annabel Lee was and still
Edgar Allan Poe was able to clearly illustrate the theme, the speaker, and the setting of the poem through the use of repetition and imagery. It is unmistakable that the theme of the poem was love. Poe used an extensive amount of repetition of the word “love” throughout the poem, to convey that love is the main theme of his poem. He also used the phrase “in a kingdom by the sea” many times in order to reveal that the setting of the poem was in a kingdom by the sea. Repetition and imagery also gave clues as to who was narrating the poem. The excessive use of the word “I” and “my” indicated that Edgar Allan Poe was the
Romanticism was effective in the poem’s Poe wrote. It became useful to him as he used it to describe what he felt. In Annabel Lee Poe wrote “But we loved with a love that was more than love I and my Annabel Lee.” Also in Annabel Lee Poe wrote “For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.” Poe’s poem “The Raven” is about a man’s lost love. In “The Raven” Poe wrote “But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, and the only word there spoken was the whispered word, Lenore?” Also in the following line of “The Raven” Poe wrote “For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.” As seen Poe used Romanticism in many of his poems and stories.
