Not a Love Song to Me You would know right away that it was going to be a sad song when the video started with James Bay sitting alone in a bleak and somber room, along with the acoustic guitar tune playing. His state of composition was similar to mine when I listened to his song. Emotionless and with eyes shut as I lied on my bed, there was no one around other than myself in a dark empty space with “Let It Go,” by James Bay playing, and the sound of my steady heart beats. I listened to this song not to reminisce about an unfortunate relationship, but rather to hear the words that soothe the soul of a victim who has experienced bullying. Many people had stated that the song is about a heartfelt break up between two lovers, but I say …show more content…
On a website called Slide Share, in which users show their analysis on lyrics of certain songs, user 07adanmu did one on “Let It Go.” Her analysis of the verse, “From throwing clothes across the floor, to teeth and claws and slamming doors at you, if this is all we’re living for, why are we doing it, doing it, doing it, anymore?” was “all of the violence and destruction they created between the two of them has him questioning the basis of their relationship. He’s questioning the point of them even having a relationship if nothing good is coming from it.” And for the chorus, “So come on, let it go, just let it be, why don’t you be you, and I’ll be me,” she stated that “he is asking her to let go of their relationship. He might be doing that, because she still has faith in them, or because she is still trying to work it out. These lines illustrate him making up his mind concerning the continuation of their relationship.” 07adanmu’s analysis of “Let It Go” is very interesting and agreeable if one were to look at the song at the relationship level. Yes, a broken relationship is very tragic and complicated but through the lyrics of “Let It Go,” it would be conveying a relationship in which the male was never able to be true to the other person and show what characteristics and kind of person he was as a whole. Thus, the whole concept of a broken relationship goes against the concept of a relationship in general; a relationship happens when two people are in love with each other for who each person is. The fact that he does not lip-sync every single lyric conveys how bullied victims want to reach out, but have difficulty speaking out for help. They are simply hoping that the little lines that they do mutter will leave hints behind for someone to notice their plea. Therefore, my conviction stands strong that the song is expressing the sorrowful emotions of a bullied victim and James Bay

“Fire away. Take your best shot, show me what you got. Honey I’m not afraid (Chris, Lines 4-5)…” Strength, love, heartache, all words that many people can identify with, but what about mental illness, depression, and suicide. These words are those that humans avoid, pretend they are not there, but in reality those three words effect many more people that was ever thought possible. Over 18.2% of United States citizens suffer from a mental illness (Depression), 6.7% of United States citizens suffer from depression (Depression), and each year in the United States there are on average 42,773 deaths by suicide (American). Now, many people can relate to the words love and heartbreak, but many more can identify with the three words that the world
Rap music has given me personally something to look up to. Not a role model but hope of continuing my dreams because rappers successfully made it. “For what’s money without happiness, or hard times without the people you love” is from a song called “Love Yourz” by J. Cole. He clearly understands how there is “beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success” because he’s lived that life. Other songs such as “2Face” or “The Autograph” were instantly relatable to me because he has been through several struggles from the beginning of his childhood. Cole’s father left when he was six leaving his mother and younger brother alone. Cole became “the man of the house” but becoming a rapper is not as easy as it seems. Cole’s messages in these two songs are relative because I too, have had several issues with my mother and father creating a sense of lonesome. Hearing music like Coles helped me overcome my
The renaissance, or rebirth, was a new beginning for Europe. After the ravages of the Bubonic plague on the continent, which wiped out over half of the European population, Europe entered an era of economic, cultural, and political success that brought new wealth and enlightenment to its devastated population. The renaissance was brought about by trade opportunities found in Asia during the Crusades. Ship builders and merchants in Italy profited from this trade, as Italy in the central trade route between the rest of Europe and the European Crusader states of The Principality of Antioch, The Kingdom of Jerusalem, and the County of Tripoli during the 12th and 13th centuries. Even after Saladin, an Islamic leader from Egypt, had defeated the crusaders, Italian merchant still held their trade connections in Asia Minor and Egypt. After the Bubonic Plague, trade became profitable once again.
The Black Plague, perhaps one of the worst epidemics in history, swept its evil across Europe in the middle of the 14th century, killing an estimated 20 million people. This major population shift, along with other disasters occurring at the time, such as famine and an already existing economic recession, plunged Europe into a dark period of complete turmoil. Anarchy, psychological breakdowns, and the dissipation of church power were some of the results. As time passed, however, society managed to find new ground and began its long path of recovery. The plague, as catastrophic as it was to medieval Europe, had just as many positive effects that came with this recovery as it did negative effects prior. An end to feudalism, increased wages and innovation, the idea of separation of church and state, and an attention to hygiene and medicine are only some of the positive things that came after the plague. It could also be argued that the plague had a significant impact on the start of the Renaissance.
In the video produced on TED “Embrace the Remix” by Kirby Ferguson, he discusses the importance of understanding that “creativity comes from without not from within and that we are not self made but dependent on each other” (Ferguson, 2012). Ferguson discusses how everything is a remix and defines remixing as copying, transforming, and combining. He makes a logical sound argument through the use of logical fallacies to convince his viewers. Ferguson argues how remixing helps creativity through the use of logos by providing cases of Steve Jobs building off ideas, appealing to ethos with poisioning the wall fallacy, and emotionally appeal to the viewers through pathos with appeal to tradition.
The video promotes a realistic portrayal of women while undermining negative societal expectations put to those women. Furthermore, the message behind it, one calling people to accept themselves and to not feel the need to strive towards unreachable goals set by the media, can be applied to the lives of not only women but men as well. While the song was obviously meant for women, it is still holds the important message for people of any gender, age, or race to understand that being true to and learning to accept one’s self can only lead to positive
This song talks a lot about the baggage of the past that people hold onto instead of letting it go. All that baggage is only going to end up hurting you more and more instead of helping you in any way possible. An example is the opening
Although the Renaissance consisted of discovering new and exciting topics, a major outbreak had occurred. This outbreak was known as the Bubonic Plague or the “Black Death” which had arrived in Europe in 1348 (Woodville). The Bubonic Plague impacted Europe and Europeans negatively economically, politically, and socially.
In the beginning of the song, If You Don’t Know, the singer is coming to realization that their partner is going to leave them. In the first stanza the lyrics say, “tonight we’re fading fast, I just want to make this last.”. The singer is saying that they want their relationship to continue and that they believe that it is coming to an end quickly.Later, in that same stanza the singer says, “I’d find a way to make you stay. I’d never let you get away.”. Here, the singer is realizing that the person whom they love is leaving. As
In the song she shoot him because she is sick of his stuff like him with the beating her and taking avenge “He’s drunk again, it’s time to fight same old s***, just on a different night she grabs the gun, she’s had enough Tonight she’ll find out how f***in’ tough is this man pulls the trigger fast as she can, never again “ This is a quote that make sense because he was beating her and she had no power to hit him back because she not as strong as him in any way shape or form. As this girl is going through this it show us how life really is because violence goes on every day because the world is a place no one want to be in. If you look at violence statists it clearly shows you how violence in pacts us. “Fathers a name yet haven’t earned yet you’re just a child with a temper Haven’t you heard don’t hit a woman kicking’ you’re a** would be a pleasure” this is a good one because some people like me take this to heart because if you hit a woman in front of me boy I tell you want and theirs many other people who think the same way. Most people were born and raised not to hit a woman because a lot of people are like this doesn’t mean there not people like (the man who hit her) out there and this what cause violence even more in the world this take it to the highest
The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in European history. The plague first arrived in Sicily, at the port of Messina, on twelve trading ships. (History) Welcoming citizens had no clue of the terror that would soon be unleashed upon their lands. Every sailor aboard each ship was either dying or dead from the vicious disease, and the living were desperate for a helping hand. Unfortunately, the people they saw as their savior were not so generous. Authorities ordered the ships to leave at once, not realizing that it was already too late. As the plague wreaked havoc across Europe, it destroyed everything in its path. People started to lose faith in God and began to wonder why he would let such a horrendous event carry on. Others thought of it as some type of punishment for all of man’s sins, and these individuals had their own way of reaching out for redemption. Europe began to crumble before their very eyes. Eventually, the Black Death led to the fall of Feudalism and serfdom. There was no organization left in society, no power or control. It just didn’t exist anymore. The virulent pestilence took innocent lives, day, after day, with no remorse.
During the Renaissance, or “rebirth”, of Europe wealth increased dramatically. The Crusades which preceded the Renaissance, provided Western Europe with new culture and products, such as silk. Merchants began trading with people from the East, which brought wealth and new kinds of goods to Europe. Slavery became re-introduced into society during the Renaissance and many Muslims worked as slaves in Italy. Money lending and trade contributed to the excessive wealth of city-states in Italy.
The Italian Renaissance is appropriately known as a period of such dynamic change within cultural innovations amongst European civilization that it is seen as a major turning point in European history. This age of rebirth abnormally broke the bonds of earlier cultural restraint and unleashed an outbreak of innovations that would forever change the course of history. Despite the common misunderstanding of the Italian Renaissance being a period of originality or of a reawakening of older cultures, it generated fundamental modernizations that accelerated growth in a vast number of forever impacting ways. Lasting from about 1350-1550, this age of modernized technology conveyed a sense of distinctive themes in art, which globalized the unification of a diverse culture. Within the Italian Renaissance, artistic innovations accelerated a new and centralized life and culture in Western European history.
The song I picked for this homework assignment is called Runaway Love by Ludacris and Mary J. Blige. The song is describing the hardships of three young girls and their struggle to survive. Finally, the girls are fed up with the lives they are forced to live and decide to pack up their things and run away. I think this song can relate to many aspects of sociology that we have learned in class. Some examples shown through the song are poverty, education, healthcare, marriage and family. All three girls’ different stories and struggles they face.
