Today us Americans have came a long way from the 1900s. There were a lot of people and things that were fighting for our freedom and to stay independent. Some of the people were Malcolm X, Rodolfo Gonzales and Langston Hughes. The document that was fighting for Americans was “The Declaration of Independence”. That is still one of the things that is helping Americans today. Another thing that is helping Americans are the people in the country. Most Americans have qualities to live up to three of those qualities are equality, determination, and caring for the future generation. First of all, Americans think that they should all be treated equally. “The Declaration of Independence” believes that we all were born to be equal. It states, “that no one is born to rule or be ruled” (Jefferson,et.al.). They believed that everyone was in charge of themselves, and no one could tell them what they should and should not do. Years laters, Malcolm X was still pushing for Americans to be equal to one another. When Malcolm X had to go to Mecca he had seen the equality there, and it made him believe it was possible. In the poem “I, Too, Sing America” the writer Langston Hughes shows that they are strong and determined to do better for themselves. It states “Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table/when company comes. Nobody’ll dare/say to me “Eat in the kitchen”(Hughes 8-10). When Langston Hughes had said that in his poem he was basically saying that he is determined for him and his brothers to do better in life to get where they need to be. Another author that was determined to do better for his american dream was Rodolfo Gonzales. In his poem “I AM JOAQUIN,” he states, “I SHALL ENDURE/I WILL ENDURE” (Gonzales 93-94) .
