Gilgamesh, without Enkidu, is like fire without oxygen. Enkidu is needed by Gilgamesh in order to flourish; not being able to survive long without his sidekick. Both men were created, by the God’s, for each other. They were built to be together and work off each other’s strengths, being able to accomplish great things together. Without Godly intervention, the two may have gone unmatched and never met their other half. The question is: would the story, The Epic of Gilgamesh, have the same outcome without Enkidu and what would become of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk, one who is macho, irresponsible, and simply not fit to be in the position that his blood status has put him in. He needed to have this emotional intimacy with someone in order to grow in a way that was previously unimagined. He needed to go to the Cedar Forest to gain a heroic reputation. He also needed to give and take on that journey with Enkidu to grow emotionally. He needed to face his weaknesses and then be built up and reassured by someone he loved and trusted. Gilgamesh needed to work together with someone to kill this monstrous beast to show that he is not almighty. It would’ve been impossible for him to do alone, he wouldn’t have had the physical or emotional capacity. Enkidu was also needed to convince him to kill Humbaba. We now know that Gilgamesh may never have gone on the journeys and created the relationships that he needed to grow to a better king. But what if there was something else? If the God’s had just gone to Gilgamesh themselves, they may have had the chance to change parts of him, but not in the same way that someone like Enkidu was able to. They may have also been able to give him some sort of medicine, like the eternal life plant, to change him. However, the God’s didn’t do either of these options. They chose to create someone like Enkidu to create a bond with Gilgamesh that would’ve been entirely different if it was someone
