Sarah Murnen, Claire Greenfield, Abigail Younger, and Hope Boyd wrote the article “Boys Act and Girls Appear: A Content Analysis of Gender Stereotypes Associated with Characters in Children’s Popular Culture.” This article was published in Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, which publishes theoretical papers and research articles that deal with gender roles in society. Conceptualization
Gender stereotypes are a critical factor in this study, and they include hyper-femininity, traditional feminine roles, hyper-masculinity, and traditional masculine roles. Goffman’s macro perspective symbolic interactionism theory basically explains how the interactions between individual’s is based on a set of universally understood symbols. This is also known as dramaturgy or impression management; individuals change how they act depending on the people they are around. For instance, if a male was giving and order to subordinates, they are more likely to follow said order than if a female was giving it. Likewise, if a female is giving instructions on how to bake a cake, they are more likely to be followed than a male in the same position. Due to the fact that as a society individuals are categorized by symbols, or things that one does, helps to explain the results of the study in the article by Murnen et al. (2015). The different defining factors of hyper-femininity, traditional feminine roles, hyper-masculinity, and traditional masculine roles can all be considered symbols. These symbols are interpreted to mean something unique to each individual in a society, and are then gender stereotyped into the categories previously mentioned.
