A father-figure will bring out the best in a son. And doesn’t have to be a biological father either. As long as you respect him, it’ll make you more mature and a better person. A father and mother play a similar role. A father is important in his child's growth and development. An absence of a father in a developing teenager is critical in later development in life, like Nwoye relationship with Okonkwo, This problem stands out in miscommunication with Stephen’s father and Nwoye’s father lead them down the wrong path, but stephen has Matsu to help him, which gets him on the right path again.
In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, father-son relationships are very important. Okonkwo who is very strong, and very wise, and is known throughout the village as a great. Nwoye, Okonkwo’s son, is the exact opposite, very lazy and shy. This created a problem between them. In fact, Nwoye has had a burning hatred for his father throughout the novel.

Having a father-figure in your life will prepare you for life more than an absent father. It’s pretty evident in the case of Nwoye and Okonkwo. Okonkwo being there is guiding him to take a manly more masculine rule which is something he would’ve never inherited from Ikemefuna or his 3 other wives. Same with Stephen and his father and his growing relation with Matsu. Stephens father was controlling, yet loving which could easily get confused and be a critical part in development so then Matsu filled in the role of a father-figure. Teaching him the fundamentals of being a successful man.
