Dianne Baumrind’s Three Parenting Styles Lena Logie Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Introduction: Baumrind felt that there were four parts of parent-child interactions: parental control, maturity demands, and clarity of communication and nurturance. “Parental Control” is linked to matters like applying rules. “Maturity demand” is the parental expectancy that children preform up to their potential. “Clarity of communication” mirrors the parents’ willingness to communicate with their children, implore their views and use reasoning to gain The desired behavior. “Nurturance” is most closely associated to parental expressions of warmth and approval, and safety of children’s physical and emotional well-being. Using these four parts, Baumrind is well known for four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive-indulgent and permissive involved (Greenwood, 2014). These parental styles are recognizable patterns of parental caretaking and communication with children (Coon & Mittterer, 2013). Authoritative: The authoritative style is known as the “ideal” parenting style and it seems to make more children come out with high ranks of self-reliance and self-esteem, who are socially accountable, liberated, and achievement-oriented according to Education .com. Authoritative parents set clear expectations and have high principles. They keep an eye on their children’s behavior, use discipline grounded on reasoning, and inspire their children to make choices and learn from their mistakes. They are also warm and nurturing parents, giving their children kindness, respect, and affection (Greenwood, 2014).
