At the heart of Desi Hoop Dreams lies an interpretation based upon how important intersectional processes are in the making of identities. Three specific intersectional identities deserve emphasis in making this argument from racism, masculinity, and discrimination. These identities can create a tough environment for people trying to fit in with different cultures and backgrounds. In Desi Hoop Dreams, characters Sanjeet and Krush show the difficulties of trying to fit into Atlanta, Georgia with a South Asian background.

There South Asian background makes people view them as terrorists, geeky, and even computer geniuses. The views that the African Americans have of Sanjeet and Krush does not make it easy to for them to fit in. Sanjeet and Krush have to pick up different hobbies that might help them making friends and developing relationships with more people. In Desi Hoop Dream, Sanjeet and Krush pick up the game of basketball to try and fit in because they realize how big it is and the way people are able to connect through it in Georgia. Sanjeet and Krush have a hard time fitting in with basketball due to the feminine aspects of their basketball game. Feminine parts of Sanjeet and Krush’s game were not being tough and not being a threat on the court. They were looked upon as easy targets that did not know what was going on. As Sanjeet and Krush continue playing basketball they are soon able to gain respect and understand what is viewed as good and bad qualities. Edward Said said “No one today is purely one thing.” (Week One, Slide 14) Although Sanjeet and Krush are viewed upon as South Asian they try to then turn more diverse and pick up African American Cultures based upon where they live and what is necessary to fit in.
Intersectional processes have a huge part in the making of identities and is shown very well how in Desi Hoop Dreams. The three most shown intersectional identities in Desi Hoop Dream popular culture, masculinity, and discrimination developed a way to understand how people are looked upon because of the race they are in a different culture but can change that by the way you act and portray yourself to others. As he makes life changing decisions, adapts to an unfamiliar culture, and finds himself amongst misery and heartbreak, Junior demonstrates resilience to overcome adversity and struggles.
The history of racial and class stratification in Los Angeles has created tension amongst and within groups of people. Southland, by Nina Revoyr, reveals how stratification influences a young Asian woman to abandon her past in order to try and fully integrate herself into society. The group divisions are presented as being personal divisions through the portrayal of a generational gap between the protagonist, Jackie, and her grandfather. Jackie speaks of her relationship with Rebecca explaining her reasons why she could never go for her. Jackie claims that “she looked Asian enough to turn Jackie off” (Revoyr, 2003, p. 105). Unlike her grandfather who had a good sense of where he came from and embraced it, Jackie rejected her racial background completely. Jackie has been detached from her past and ethnicity. In the world of sociology and the studies of human interaction, the term intersectionality has been defined as, “the idea that various biological, social, and cultural categories – including gender, race, class, and ethnicity – interact and contribute towards systematic social inequality” (“Definition of Intersectionality – Sociology”). However, as Dr. White defined the term on the Spring 2014 Final Writing Assignment sheet, these categories that make up one’s identity can “intersect or interact in ways that can either advantage or disadvantage the person’s well-being and development” (White). In regards to the text, David M. Newman’s Identities & Inequalities: Exploring the Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality, Newman progressively explores the concept of intersectionality throughout the entirety of the text, but he does not ever actually define the term itself. Although an exact, clear-cut definition of the term “intersectionality” has not been officially established, the concept of the term is fairly simple to understand. Every person has different social identities that they carry to their name. Intersectionality is simply an analysis of how those different identities play off of each other and how they affect the person they are describing.
The RMMDI is based on the fundamental concept of intersectionality, or the theory that multiple social identities (e.g. race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, etc.) interact to shape the lived experience of social issues, especially marginalization and oppression (Crenshaw, 1991). The RMMDI helps to illuminate the intersectional nature of the effects of the graffiti incident, as well as the advantages of using an intersectional approach for creating the case resolution. In the RMMDI, individuals hold self-perceptions of their own identities (e.g. race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.) that influence their cognitive appraisal of the self; in essence, these self-perceptions help individuals answer the critical question of “Who am I?” that is necessary for the development of self-authorship (Baxter Magolda, 2001, as cited in Patton, et al., 2016). Since people who have different identities view the American Dream in a variety of perspectives, individuals need to find identities in order to have a deep understanding of obstacles they will face and voices they want. In The Woman Warrior, Maxing Hong Kingston, a Chinese American, struggles to find her identity which both the traditional Chinese culture and the American culture have effects on. However, in The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros clearly identifies herself as a Hispanic woman, and pivots to move up economically and socially to speak for her race. Even though both Kingston and Cisneros look for meanings of their identities, they have different approaches of reaching the full understanding.

In Dionne Brand’s What We All Long For (WWALF), we view and contrast the lives of four different but very similar characters in which they negotiate different aspects of their lives in order to find their own unique and comfortable place in the powerful and diverse city of Toronto. The following essay examines the depiction of global spaces and the effects on diasporic identity through characters Tuyen and Carla from WWALF. I will analyze and contrast the adaptation of the characters to the city, the influence from the characters’ homes, and the connection to the emotional spaces; illustrating the effects on identification.

Establishing an identity has been called one of the most important milestones of adolescent development (Ruffin, 2009). Additionally, a central part of identity development includes ethnic identity (ACT for Youth, 2002). While some teens search for cultural identity within a smaller community, others are trying to find their place in the majority culture. (Bucher and Hinton, 2010)The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian chronicles Junior’s journey to discovery of self. As with many developing teens, he finds himself spanning multiple identities and trying to figure out where he belongs. “Traveling between Reardan and Wellpinit, between the little white town and the reservation, I always felt like a stranger. I was half Indian in one place and half white in the other” (p.118). On the reservation, he was shunned for leaving to go to a white school. At Reardon, the only other Indian was the school mascot, leaving Junior to question his decision to attend school he felt he didn’t deserve. Teens grappling with bicultural identities can relate to Junior’s questions of belonging. The average person wants one thing more than anything else, and that thing is to belong. Usha, a young girl from Calcutta, is no different. Already trying the find her place in the world, Usha must now assimilate into cultural society within the United States. Usha’s uncle, Pranab Kaku, came from Calcutta as well having first come to America, his experiences start off worse than Usha’s, which causes him to join the family in an act of social grouping. With the Old World trying to pull them back and the New World just out of reach, both must overcome tradition and develop their own personal values.

In other words, the different determinant factors of the individuality have been considered separately, and these components have been regarded as a unrelated simple category. Racism, stereotypes, and white privilege are all concepts that affect all of us, whether we believe it or not. If an adolescent of a minority can distinguish these concepts in his society, then we all should be aware of them. These concepts are all clearly demonstrated in “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian”. Anyone and everyone could clearly understand this novel, but the intended audience is middle school to college level students. The novel’s goal is to help white students understand the effects of white privilege in an easier, more understandable way.
