Modern youth is trying to keep up with the latest technology and trends. They want to have as many gadgets and various toys as possible, obviously, such things as cell phones, computers, tablets, clothes, and it’s not cheap. The manufacturers every year produce newer and improved products, so the prices never fall. Most of them start looking for jobs. They are learning how to become an adult and prepare for their future. They also get good experience by working hard and understanding how life is actually hard. They realize if you want something, you need to earn it by doing something. They require to have intuition as well as knowledge and sometimes personal skills. The author of Blue-Collar Brilliance, Mike Rose, uses the story of his mother and uncle. He disagrees with the statement, “Intelligence is closely associated with formal education.” To support his disagreement he talks about how skilled his mother and uncle are, without continuing their education. Mike uses rhetorical questioning in his mother’s point of view at her job in the fast paced job. The assumption of the quote “work requiring less schooling requires less intelligence”. Mike Rose argues with that by saying ” intelligence is closely associated with formal education– the type of schooling a person has, how much and how long –and most people seem to move comfortably from that notion to a belief that work requiring less schooling requires less intelligence”. In another words, Mike Rose saying that most people think that blue-collar jobs are for “stupid” people. Reasoning with that quote he can justify why he is disagreeing with such a statement. He telling his audience how his uncle dropped out of high school, and continued his life, until he became supervisor of General Motors. He is trying to tell us that his uncle has authority without advanced education. Mike supports this by saying his uncle had more hands-on experience and knowledge in his field than anyone would learn in a college. I agree and disagree at the same time, because I believe that people learn way more when they learning by doing with their hands than in a classroom. But when you start your career without education it takes more years and tough moments, because in our world there’s so much new technologies coming up. Mike Rose, a professor at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Informational studies, is well known for his writing on issues of literacy. The article Blue-Collar Brilliance, written by Mike Rose, originally appeared in 2009 in the American Scholar magazine. The article not only presents a strong claim, but it also includes personal narratives, which increases the author 's credibility. In addition, connections between the opposing side and sufficient visuals strengthen Rose’s argument as a whole.
He contributes personal examples and results of clinical tests that argue the misconception of unintelligent blue-collar workers. Rose witnessed the skill and intellect his mother, Rose Meraglio Rose or “Rosie” supplied in order to provide for her family. Especially when Rosie was working in the 50’s of crowded family restaurants, he saw her struggle. Rose observed his mother mastering memory skills to deliver the correct orders and maneuver around her workplace in the most efficient ways. Rosie had to balance many problems on her shoulders, all of which required both mental and physical fortitude. Nonetheless, he still disagrees with the assumption that “Intelligence is closely associated with formal education” (281). Although, this assumption has been implemented throughout history, there are plenty of more social interaction, planning, and problem solving that blue-collars are not credited for. Joe began his journey as a blue-collar after dropping out of the ninth grade to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Blue Collar workers today are looked down upon by most of society. People think that if you have a blue collar job you aren’t smart and not successful. But in my opinion, blue collar workers are the backbone of our society, and deserve the same amount of respect as white collar workers. “Blue Collar Brilliance by Mike Rose” explains how blue collar workers are very smart and use a lot of brainpower to get their jobs done. Both his Uncle and mother were blue collar workers and that’s where he got his inspiration to stand up for blue collar workers around the world. He gives us examples of how his own family members were blue collar workers and how they were smart and how they excelled at their jobs. He uses his own experiences to show us that blue collar workers are in fact smart, able to adapt to many different situations, and deserve respect.

In the essay ”Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff, he discusses different types of intellect, more specifically the ways they can apply to us in our lives. He discusses the different types of “smarts” referred to in his paper as street smarts, and school smarts. Graff hints upon the missed opportunities by colleges to embrace the form of intellect called “street smarts” because of a preconceived idea that there is no way to use this form of knowledge in an academic setting. The author responds back to the naysayers by saying that people only look at the test scores earned in school, but not the actual talent. He says, “Our culture- in Cartesian fashion- separates the body from the mind, so that, for example we assume that the use of tool does not involve abstraction. A blue-collar worker’s job is primarily physical labor, and with it comes demands not only on the body but also the mind. In “Blue-Collar Brilliance” author Mike Rose explains how these workers overcome problems, physical demands and develop important skills necessary to perform to the best of their abilities without a formal education. I agree with Rose that with experience through observation, trial and error and applying quick thinking strategies, a blue-collar worker can excel and be very successful in life.
There has been an increase in high paying jobs that require young people to have a higher education in developing countries that are enhancing and integrating to global economy. Technology is another factor that is becoming more prevalent in these under developed countries. It’s becoming less common for young people to go out and do agricultural work to support the family financially, as many parents rather support and make it easier for their children to go to school. These entire factors can eventually open up all the possibilities for more and more emerging adults to experience life and explore their independence, as countries become wealthier chances are that more young people can go to school and move in to a dorm and have a semi independent lifestyle until they reach adulthood. This can benefit our future generations to come and potentially increase the life expectancy and become achievable adults that live a longer and prosperous life. Intelligent students may or may not need a bachelor’s degree to achieve success. Even a two year diploma is enough for them to earn money or achieve success. If we analyze the mindset of an intelligent student they tend to focus on a particular subject of interest which they find most intriguing. This results in less focus on other subjects. An intelligent student may not be able to concentrate on other subjects that extend to failure, and the student might not want to complete a four year degree. He would rather concentrate on his subject of interest and master it. Consider a real life example, Bill Gates, he was a college dropout, he was so focused on operating systems concept that he decided not to study anything other than that. He is successful even though he did not complete a four year degree.
Everyone has an opinion concerning what type of education is most useful. We all know that a college education is important in the competitive world we live in today. For instance, if you want a career in engineering, medicine, chemistry or law, a bachelor's degree or higher is mandatory. We often see people who have made it really big, and yet have little or no formal education. My opinion is, in order to get and keep a good paying job, you need both “street smarts” and “book smarts.” The combination of practical knowledge and explicit knowledge is the key to a successful career. Both types of knowledge have distinct advantages.

Additionally, it has been demonstrated that formal education isn’t the only place of learning, but rather blue-collar jobs could serve as a substitute for a learning environment too, sometimes even teaching knowledge which could surpass white-collar intelligence. Additively, through Rose’s paragraph composition, a person could see and feel the amount of labor and thought that went behind each blue-collar worker’s tasks allowing the audience to understand the tediousness of a blue-collar job. As such, it is once again shown that blue-collar careers do not fall behind white-collar careers in terms of skills and intelligence because for each career there is a requirement for different skill sets and knowledge.
