As civilization has evolved, expanded, and changed over the course of human history, there has always been conflict between the proverbial “us and them.” So long as there has been social interactions between groups of humans, there have been differences in features, cultures, religions, and many other aspects that have been used as the justification and fuel for bias and conflict. Since early in our species existence we have relied heavily on violence as a reaction to difference and change, and as we travel through history towards present day, we see that groups have always sought to expand their control over others in a belief that they were dominant or superior. In this particular society, race is still a prevalent issue, as blacks are almost universally looked down upon and discriminated against while the whites sit atop the hierarchy of the social world. Even as thousands upon thousands of blacks rush to receive their treatment from Dr. Crookman, hoping to be “cured” of their blackness, the problem of race does not and will not disappear through methods such as these. While an issue might become obsolete, it does not mean that anything has been solved or improved. In Number 12 Looks Just Like You, the entire society functions by creating carbon copies of people with no outward flaws, and entirely similar personalities. By making everyone’s needs and wants coincide, the society works in unison perfectly, thus creating a type of Utopia. While all social problems have been solved, having body autonomy and the right to choose your own future is something that is an ingrained desire for most humans. Eliminating difference does not fix those issues, and a society devoid of difference and personal opinion would not be an ideal world at all. With the advances in technology that have come and will continue to come, it will always be easier to destroy rather than take the time to repair any conflicts that arise. Temporary inequality exists as a means of “improving” a subordinate to the level of a dominant. After the period of inequality is over, the two view each other as equals. The other form of inequality, permanent inequality, exists solely because of an ascription of inferiority to a subordinate that is inherent and unchangeable. Unlike temporary inequality, there is no possibility of improvement for the subordinate; they are, in the eyes of the dominant, inferior and impossible to “fix.” The dominants, who view themselves naturally superior to the subordinates, begin to take advantage of the subordinates. “Out of the total range of human possibilities, the activities most highly valued in any particular culture will tend to be enclosed within the domain of the dominant group; less valued functions are relegated to the subordinates” (Rothenberg, 112). Moreover, the subordinates, who by this point are under the total control of the dominant group, may begin to internalize the value of the dominants. “[Subordinates’] incapacities are ascribed to innate defects or deficiencies of mind or body…More importantly, subordinates themselves can come to find it difficult to believe in their own ability” (112). This theory of domination and subordination are clearly mirrored in race relations in the United States. Whites, who are the dominant group, make all of the fallacious errors involved in race-based thinking; they are prone to, like Miller describes, hoarding superior roles in society and practicing systematic cruelty towards the subordinates due to their sincere belief that the subordinates are inherently incapable of rising to the level of the dominant. Every person has unalienable rights that cannot be deprived from them. This is includes people of any race and any gender. Humans would fight to their last breath to keep these rights; for the reason that it is their right to do as such. They depict themselves as noble knights who protect everyone’s rights from the evil claws of their enemies. However, are we really fighting for others’ needs? Will we actually protect the rights of others to death even if we disagree? We take a self-righteous stance to convince that we are “magnanimous, noble, and unselfish,” when in fact we are only acting so that the views and thoughts of others can better ourselves. Dorothy Roberts makes a compelling argument, at first glance, against race-based medicine. She stated many facts in her lecture which gave her argument legitimacy, but under further investigation it was discovered that many of her statistics were manipulated. The strongest part of her argument was when she incorporated ethos and pathos to convince the reader that race-based medicine was in fact racist. The world is filled with many different types of societies and cultures. This is due to the fact that many people share dissimilar beliefs and ideas, as well as diverse ways of life. People lived under different circumstances and stipulations, therefore forming cultures and societies with ideas they formulated, themselves. These two factors, society and culture, are what motivate people to execute the things that they do. Social equality is the concept in which all individuals possess the same fundamental basic liberties, opportunities, moral value/respect, and social benefits. The concept of ‘equality’ has a multiplicity of meanings and definitions, and with the rise of liberalization and democratization around the world ‘social equality’ has become the most predominant. As economic openness creates greater wealth disparities, the parallel rise of democratization has enabled citizens to demand more accountability measures and public welfare services from their governments in order to manage such disparities. Although the movement towards greater social equality has made significant strides with the establishment of equal rights (especially in the 1960s following the civil rights and women rights movement), inequality is still widespread in society among different ethnicities, social classes, and even religions. Inequality is not, however, a characteristic that only encompasses/embodies developing countries, but also embodies developed countries as well.
Equality is about an individual’s rights, giving people choices and respect. It is about ‘creating a fairer society, where everyone can participate and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential’ (DoH, 2004).
Some people define race as if it is something solid or concrete, but what they don’t see is that it is a “social fabrication”(Mathew Desmond, Mustafa Emibayer,2009;2). Race is based on the difference in physical appearance which is determined, for example, by the most apparent trait; skin color. Inequality emerges when people living, whether on the same sovereign terrain or across continents, are not treated with the same amount of respect and not given the chance to engage their rights in a free and fair manner. Race and inequality are often linked together because of the “issues that began in the 1800s”(NFB;Journey to Justice;2000) such as racial segregation. Over the years issues of race and inequality have decreased dramatically. How did racial inequality decrease and through what? To study this case, two theories need to be put in practice, “resource mobilisation theory and new social movement”(Tremblay;2013).
Everyone has the ability to be a functioning member of society, despite any dissimilarity or obstacles in their life; diverse individuals who stand out are often taken advantage of and targeted. Equality is a right that everyone should be entitled to on all levels, despite gender or any mental, physical or developmental differences.

The Association of Black Psychologist (ABP) (2013) defines colorism as skin-color stratification. Colorism is described as “internalized racism” that is perceived to be a way of life for the group that it is accepted by (ABP 2013). Moreover, colorism is classified as a persistent problem within Black American. Colorism in the process of discriminatory privileges given to lighter-skinned individuals of color over their darker- skinned counterparts (Margret Hunter 2007). From a historical standpoint, colorism was a white constructed policy in order to create dissention among their slaves as to maintain order or obedience. Over the centuries, it seems that the original purpose of colorism remains. Why has this issue persisted? Blacks have been able to dismantle the barriers faced within the larger society of the United States. Yet, Blacks have failed to properly address the sins of the past within the ethnic group. As a consequence of this failure, colorism prevails. Through my research, I developed many questions: Is it right that this view remain? How does valuing an individual over another cause distribution to the mental health of the victims of colorism? More importantly, what are the solutions for colorism? Colorism, unfortunately, has had a persisted effect on the lives of Black Americans. It has become so internalized that one cannot differentiate between the view of ourselves that Black Americans adopted from slavery or a more personalized view developed from within the ethnicity. The consequences of this internalized view heightens the already exorbitant mental health concerns within the Black community, but the most unfortunate aspect of colorism is that there is contention on how the issue should be solved.
Equality is a concept mankind never is able to grasp correctly. Of course humans will always search for different solutions to create fairness, but factors such as human greed, ignorance of mass populations, and even biological aspects stagnates the process of equality. The oldest and most relevant discussion on equality lies with the difference of sex; man versus woman. Initially, men, because of their physical superiority, were given the prospects many women never even dreamt to have. Conversely, as time has progressed, women have fought this unfair treatment with demands of suffrage and similar rights to those of their male equivalents. Greatly enough, this generation has done an exceptional job in the challenge of overcoming sexism and inequality. However, will this search for equality ever end? When can we say we have created an equal race of men and women? The fact of the matter is that it is truly impossible to have equality between the sexes because of predisposed circumstances that are not easily controllable in the slightest bit.
