Beyonce is known for glamour, makeup, and for dancing around in nearly nothing. She is an extremely prominent pop star, but she’s also known for being a coveted victim of the male ogle. Feminist is not a word normally used to describe Beyonce. Her recent declaration of her feminism has left many wondering if Beyonce really is a feminist. From booty shorts to hair weaves, most argue that Beyonce doesn’t look the part; therefore, she is not a feminist. She may not look the part of a feminist, but Beyonce is a feminist. Primarily, what does a feminist look like? Feminists are envisioned as prude and overly modest. In actuality, feminists can look like anyone. Specifically, she uses ethos to further her credibility as a feminist. Beyonce continually repeats the word “flawless”. By itself “flawless” doesn’t say a lot, but add in, “I woke up like this”, which is also repetitive, she is metaphorically stating that women are perfect the way they are. Women are flawless; they shouldn’t be expected to get up and do all this primping for a man. If a woman wears makeup, she is wearing it for herself, not for a man. Beyonce also establishes her credibility with using an excerpt for Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “We Should All be Feminists” speech. Adichie is a well-known, established Nigerian feminist author. The argument could be made that for Beyonce “Flawless” is just a song, another source of income. If that were the case, would Beyonce have jumped through the multiple, horrendous hoops in the publishing world just to include Adichie in a song that was nothing more than a cradle of wealth to Beyonce? Yes, she could have, but it isn’t likely. Adichie is eminent in the feminism world. She wouldn’t give a part of herself to someone who was just looking for a quick profit. Beyonce is using “Flawless” to tell the world she is a feminist, and she will stand behind other feminists. She uses Adichie to enhance her credibility and to make her song
In today’s society, the dominant ethnic group continues to be the white race, as it has been for the past few centuries. Whites can ignore what is occurring in the world since the majority of the time it does not specifically affect them. The Caucasian race is very privileged, yet they are unaware of this fact, and it is, therefore, invisible to them. There are many reasons as to why this fact is true, some of which is explained in Roxane Gay’s novel “Bad Feminist,” she outlines her views on this subject and writes about what knowledge people should have about their privilege and how they can change their perceptions. People being unable to acknowledge their privilege becomes a worldwide issue and affects the lives of many individuals worldwide.
In this case women are stuck where in no matter how they act or how they dress, they end up put into a label they do not necessarily belong in. The main goal of feminism is to create equality for women and fight against the labels put on them. Though throughout time feminism itself has been given a negative label. In today 's society women do not want to be referred to as feminists from fear of being labeled as a bitter man hating woman. This is definitely amplified in media today. Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist, brings up the idea of the essential feminist and where it suggests,” anger, humorlessness, militancy, unwavering principles, and a prescribed set of rules for how to be a proper feminist woman” (169). This fear of being labeled a feminist not only comes from fear of being thought of as angry or humorless, but from being attacked for not being the “proper feminist woman”.
In modern day society, popular culture has gained equal status to world issues and politics. Music, movies, and literature have started cultural revolutions and challenged the straight-forward thinking many individuals have accepted in the past. But while popular culture can advance new ideas and create movements, it also has the ability to challenge advancements society has made. Imani Perry’s essay, The Venus Hip Hop and the Pink Ghetto, focuses on hip hop and its negative impact on women and body image.

Before, Beyoncé can be perceived as a feminist or not, first a person must ask and understand what a feminist is. Many people may have an image in their head of a feminist, as a reflection of the Miss America Protest of 1968; this was the second wave of feminism, where hundreds of liberal women protested against pageant and what it stood for (Napikoski, n.d.). “The second wave was increasingly theoretical, based on a fusion of neo-Marxism and psycho-analytical theory, and began to associate the subjugation of women with broader critiques of patriarchy, capita...

Feminism includes more than ten types feminists. The three significant and standing out groups are Liberal, Radical, and Post-modern. Liberal feminists believe that unless women have the same opportunities and treatment as men, they will not be able to achieve their full potential. Another type is Radical feminists who believe the world would be so much better without men in it. Because they accept heterosexuality, lesbians are dominant in the radical feminism pool. Lastly, Post-modern feminists believe and fight for the equality for all genders not just only female. The movie The World According to Garp is one of the best examples for showing the characteristics of each type of feminists that has been listed above.

An upcoming artist whose very popular in the music industry, and so happens to be a strong feminist advocate is known by the stage name Grimes. In all of Grimes’s appearances, performances, and music videos, she demonstrates her knowledge of, and her refusal to participate in, self-objectification and being sexualized.
