Introduction
Academic achievement is a major issue among students , teachers, parents and administrators in Pakistan. Attempts have been made to unravel the difference factors that affect the academic performance. many psychologists attempted to explain the different predictors of academic achievement .factors such as gender(Weis, Heikamp, & Trommsdorff, 2013) , study habits(Rana, 2011), self-concept(Yousuf, 2010), home background(Brecko, 2004) and personality traits(Dunne, 2015) have been extensively explored. In other words it means those qualities the individual is noted for. Traits on the other hand are "enduring dimensions of personality characteristics which differentiates people from one another" (Colman, 2003 in Daminabo 2008).
These traits, popularly known as the 'Big Five’ include conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness to experience, extraversion and neuroticism. These personality traits affect academic achievement in students, either positively like agreeableness and conscientiousness(Ikpi et al., 2014) or negatively like neuroticism and extraversion (Chamorro-Premuzic & Furnham, 2003)

It is what sets us all apart from one another. Personality psychologist has coined five different traits into the Big Five. It consists of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience.

These scales are commonly alternatively represented by the OCEAN acronym Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion/Introversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. The Big Five structure captures, at a broad level of abstraction, commonalities among most of the existing systems of personality description, and provides an integrative descriptive model for personality research. Personality can be defined as an individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting. Many personality theorists have put forward claims as to where personality is derived from and how it develops throughout an individual’s life. The two main personality theories this essay will be focusing on is the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) (Bandura, 1986) and the Trait Theory – Five Factor Theory (FFT) (McCrae and Costa, 1995). The SCT allocates a central role to cognitive, observational learning and self-regulatory processes (Bandura, 1986). An individual’s personality develops through experiences with their sociocultural environment. Whereas the Trait Theory proposes that all individuals are predisposed with five traits (Extraversion, Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Neuroticism) which determines our personality. This theory also puts forward that personality is stable and cannot change as it’s biologically determined.
“The Big Five Trait Theory” is based on the five broad dimensions of one’s personality which according to Jason Rentfrow (PH. D) was “uncovered” after “decades of research on personality.”

Discussed below are different researchers’ arguments and explanations on how personality predicts employee performance. This essay will explore both negative and positive ways in which personality can predict the performance, as well as explaining what personality is. Past research has “demonstrated that personality constructs are associated with work performance, with some traits like conscientiousness predicting success around jobs. Other linked with specific occupations e.g. extraversion correlates with success in sales and management as well as training performance supporting”, (Barrick et al., 2002, 87: p.43).

Finally, it is a general opinion among many that academic performance is a manner of will and determination of an individual rather than their socioeconomic status.
