You suddenly awake from a coma in what seems to be an abandoned hospital in downtown Atlanta. As you leave your hospital bed looking for any signs of life, you see a barricaded door that reads “Don’t Open Dead Inside”. As you walk past the door, hands of the undead reach out in attempts to consume you. This is how main character, Rick Grimes, was introduced into the zombie ridden post apocalyptic world of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” If you are a fan of the series and have been watching it since season 1, you absolutely know that the “walkers” are not the only thing that Rick and the other main characters have to protect themselves from. Throughout the series, the characters encounter an abundance of obstacles to conquer. Not only do they have to protect themselves from zombies, but they are also dealing with the internal struggle due to their circumstances. In a world where the dead roam, one may begin to lose their sense of humanity and purpose. Characters such as Rick, Daryl, Michonne, Carl, and Maggie are …show more content…
Rick, a former sheriff, is now forced to break rules and laws that he once used to enforce before all hell broke loose. The Strain and Anomie theory, describes why Rick and his fellow survivors must result to a life of deviance. These theories are concerned with the internal and external pressures that drive people to crime and deviance. There are many external pressures within the show such as walkers and other bands of survivors trying to survive just like them. There are no moral institutions present anymore which results in a lack of moral direction. The institutions that once kept them in line are gone so they are now in a full state of normlessness. The only objective now is to survive, therefore, if that means violating social norms and committing acts such as murder and stealing, the characters will do whatever it
It starts out as finding a safe place from the zombies, but later, as the group is more and more confident in their defense against the zombies, it becomes about protecting themselves from other groups of non-zombies. Paul A. Cantor explains in his story that “this show suggests that its characters must ultimately reply on themselves and their own resources. In various flashbacks, we learn that, prior to the zombie plague, the husband and wives were generally unhappy in their marriages, with soap opera consequences.” (290) The greatest example of survival skills on the Walking Dead, comes from a character named Carol. Watching season 1, you would’ve never imagined Carol being alive in season 7. In the beginning, Carol’s character is a beaten down mousy housewife and mother. Her husband was very emotionally and physically abusive. This vicious cycle of abuse left Carol with little self-worth that left her mentally unprepared for survival skills needed in this zombie apocalypse. Carol quickly realizes that she needs to take matters into her own hands and makes tough decisions that no one in the group will. She eventually becomes so passionate about self-preservation that she starts teaching knife skills to children in their group. Another example of how ruthless her survival skills evolved, she takes a murderess child to the field and tells her “look at the pretty flowers,” and then shoots her in the back of the
While facing death in every direction, whether from walkers, physical or mental illness, other people, or even the idea of suicide, the world in which Rick and his group live within is a hardened and cold one. Even as such is true, these people still crave survival and must do so by having food and water inside them and supplies on their back. But what would these people be able to eat as a constant food source you may ask? Well the answer is not a constant one but why not look inside the diet of such people. With much hunting and gathering to be accomplished, nutrients are needed, thus the day is usually started off with fresh garden vegetables or whatever they can muster up from the trees and dirt around them in their
Although the theme of societal breakdown runs throughout the entire series, Episode 5 (entitled “Wildfire ”) provides several strong examples of the fragility of modern societal structures. The opening of the episode reveals that the camp was set upon by a small group of zombies, with fatal consequences for several of the survivors. Prior to Rick’s arrival, the camp had been looking to Shane as their leader.
Did you know that the word zombies come from African and Haitian people? From the legends regarding voodoo doctors that they believe used to and might still do. Bring back the dead for a short amount of time and turn the to mindless slaves. That will follow their every order with no hesitation. Which is actually like the walkers are doing in the Walking Dead but they weren't raised from the dead. I mean they were but not literally the virus brought them back, not a person. Same goes for Kitchenette Building the speaker is not a zombie or a walker but she might as well be. The fact that she continues to live a life she doesn't want and doesn’t make changes to fix it. She just continues to do the same thing every day that, I bet anybody
There have been numerous claims and allegations surrounding The Walking Dead claiming that it somehow lacks as far as race and diversity are concerned; however, this is completely and utterly false. For one, even if there wasn’t any diversity shown in the main cast, the author has no obligation to do so from a narrative perspective, but that is completely irrelevant because author Robert Kirkman has a very healthy amount of variety in the main cast. Not only having included them, he also gives these several diverse characters important roles and unique attributes in the story. In the first volume of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead graphic novel, there is representation for strong female characters, African Americans, and Asians; additionally, these ethnicities are all portrayed in a unique way, not being devolved into mere stereotypes for the sake of fitting the mold of the narrative and contributing to a diversity quotient.
After all the challenges Rick faced through this story in the end everything came down to empathy. His feelings toward the androids, the feelings about animals, the feelings of others, and even the feeling towards himself. Any human being no matter who they are has empathy of some sort. What Philip K. Dick was trying to posses in this story is a world without empathy is like Earth in this story, damaged, contaminated, worthless, contagious, and sad. Be true to whom you are, have empathy for others, and reach for your goals.
Throughout six seasons of AMC’s ongoing hit show The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes, the main protagonist, has grown from: a tough guy police officer with a soft heart for helping others (almost always coming with a great personal risk) to the ultimate leader and survivor. Rick’s character arc during the first five seasons of the show, were about the ongoing growth/development of Rick, along with little benchmarks along the way in the form of gruesome but necessary murder. During Rick’s character arc, he goes through three major phases that reflect his morals and view of the world. These changes are then highlighted by the various brutal gory kills Rick has achieved. We as viewers get an in depth look at this gradual evolution as he fights to survive
The character of Rick Grimes is awoken from a coma to find that the world has evolved into the apocalypse. Once awoken Rick is desperate to find his family and protect them from the now disastrous world. Through Rick Grimes character the audience empathizes with the underdog. After seeing his horrific odds I was able to not only empathize but also wonder what I would do if confronted with a similar situation. Throughout the progression of the character Rick Grimes, I witnessed a man begin as an underdog and take on a leadership role. Rick is thrust into the new world and before finding his footing he becomes a natural leader. Although some would disagree on the leadership qualities the character exhibits, I find this character to be crucial to The Walking Dead. The character prevails in many deadly situations often risking his own life to ensure the safety of the group. The show creates an outstanding character that is truly captivating to watch. Each episode provides a powerful dynamic between the struggles Rick faces and his ability to protect
What if you could forget all your worries and cease to care? What if you could avoid all the stresses of being a teenager in high school, all the expectations teachers, parents, and society impose on you, and simply be free and careless? Would you decide to take action? Would you risk everything to have a permanent feeling of euphoria and liberty? Would it be worth it? In the fictional world Chuck Palahniuk creates in his short story “Zombie”, there is a way to make this happen. Nonetheless, this fictional world is not impossible, it is improbable.
Rick is one of the main characters shown in the Walking Dead. Rick is an individual who is typically calm. He shows a side of his knowledge and how it pertains to survival, along with the nature of being a good friend. On the other hand, he has created stress within the group due to the morals that he possesses. However one of Rick’s greatest faults may be is his intuition to place
Mass amounts of people will die, families will be separated, and peaceful ways of life will be long gone. Guard your loved ones, board up your windows and keep your gun under your pillow because you’re gonna need it. I have taught the facts, the opinions, and the theories on the possibility of a zombie apocalypse. I have explained with facts and statistics the ramifications of it if it was to happen, the way and speed at which it can spread, and the cruelty that will follow. You can protect yourself and the ones closest to you, but first you have to believe it.
One message the show sends to its viewer’s is survival; one must do anything they can to survive but while trying to survive one can also offer help to others who are trying to do the same. In several scenes Rick and the group are seen hunting animals, and entering abandoned houses to find supplies-- medicine, food and guns. The actions the characters take by entering abandoned homes and hunting animals indicate that since there are nearly no stores close by to grab food or medicine, they must now hunt and find their own medicine . Another example of how this show sends a message of survival is when Rick, Michonne, black young women carrying a katana, and Carl, Rick's son, set out to find food for Judith, R...
A series allows for broader representations, therefore a lot more criticism on the postmodern world. The Walking Dead’s ‘walkers’ as the character refer to them on the show, are fictional terrorists - people killing people, except their aims do not go past this, similar to a lot of terrorists in 2017. The media did not hesitate to call Salman Abedi a terrorist. Abedi was killed in the Manchester massacre, hence his intentions were never revealed. To compare, Stephen Paddock who is responsible for the Las Vegas shooting could not be labelled as a terrorist because “We still do not have a clear motive or reason why.” The definition of terrorist does not apply only to ‘Muslims’ howbeit to anyone. It is merely a stereotype that is rapidly corrupting the world. This is the same reason we enjoy zombie movies without contradiction. Terrorism is the second greatest fear in America while zombies are the least according to a Chapman University extensive survey. Zombies are fictional, as one grows up they can separate the real from the fake. Although we are still scared of them, meaning there has to be some truth. Yes, they are brain-eating monsters but they also embody a real life ordeal that we are facing greatly in reality. In The Walking Dead, an audience sees rotting facial features and thinks inhumane, dead. What we fail to notice is the dress codes. They wear everyday clothing.
Rick is a cartoon character trying to seek redemption. He seeks redemption from his family, friends, past and contiueing sins; through means of alcohol, nerturaring Morty through adolescents, and being present for family situations. The show is about about Rick and Morty who go on wild and crazy adventures trough the galaxy. Through their adventures Rick is trying to reconnect with his family. He is an alcoholic who seem 's to drink to mask his previous failures and current situations. He is 'nt empathetic to others emotions; however, as the show progresses you begin to see him losing this trait and begins to be occasionally respectful or at least be cautious
In Paul Scheuring’s 4 season thriller there is no Gods you need to sacrifice for but rather the bond of family worth doing anything for. In Prison Break, protagonist Michael Scofield would go any extent for his family. Michael had his life together with a masters as a structural engineer while his brother was just a high school dropout. However when Michael finds out that his brother was accused for killing the vice president’s brother and put on death row, Michael gave up that future of his filled with opportunity to save his brother. How far would you go for others? Michael got a full body tattoo and got himself incarcerated in order to break Lincoln, his brother, out. He did this for him because he loves his family. Although Scofield is
