In the Short story “Adultery,” author Bonnie Steinbock presents a variety of interesting facts on how women wish their husbands would be faithful. With this being said, Steinbock goes on to talk about trust and deception—is it culturally okay to take part in adultery, and if so is it morally wrong? The author, also, mentions how in some open marriages couples that did not freely choose their partner are at risk of taking part in adultery. She also expressed her own view on the topic. The view that open marriages are not immoral, although they do not follow the ideal marriage value. Steinbock presents a lot of good information on the topic of adultery, similarly, her overall view is completely valid.
A point I would agree with is on traditional culture. Someone’s culture is dependent on whether or not certain ideas are accepted. An example the author used was the traditional Eskimo culture. In their culture, to show courtesy, they share their wife with the visitor; however, in other cultures this wouldn’t be justifiable. For example, here in California it is not traditionally acceptable for people to participate in adultery--even though many are capable of doing it. If one were to participate in any disloyal act then they would have to hide it and not be so open about it. Therefore,

Adultery can happen for many different reasons. With this being said, the way one was raised has a lot to do with the perception of other people’s view. For example, if one was raised in a family where they would see their father or mother cheating all the time, then eventually they might think it’s okay to be doing that; however, if someone comes from a family in which they are told that cheating is bad then the way they see adultery will be completely
In examining and analyzing different theories and reasoning, Is adultery immoral? By Richard Wasserstrom. No, adultery isn’t always immoral by the virtue of having cases where adultery is acceptable and moral. As defined by Wasserstrom, adultery is any case of sexual activity outside of marriage. I agree with Wasserstrom’s approach that you can’t disregard the cases where extramarital sex is moral.
Most American women would shudder at the thought of their husband spending time with another woman. Not Elizabeth Joseph. Joseph chronicles her life in polygamy in an essay that appeared in the New York Times in 1991 entitled “My Husband’s Nine Wives”. Joseph discusses how it is problematic to manipulate her life around her husband Alex, her occupation and her youngster on a daily basis. She argues monogamous relationships are chockfull of “compromises” and “trade-offs”. She mentions how excited the children are when their Father comes to eat once a week. Joseph speaks of making an “appointment” to spend time with him. If it is another wife’s turn, Joseph may interject if she is “longing for intimacy and comfort only he can provide.” (148) Joseph asserts pleural marriage is the only resolution to her problems. Unlike Joseph, most American women are managing a demanding full time job, hyperactive children and their needy husband on a daily basis.

In short story “The Cheater’s Guide to Love,” written by Junot Diaz, we observe infidelity and the negative effects it has on relationships. Anyone who cheats will eventually get caught and will have to deal with the consequences. People tend to overlook the fact that most relationships are unlikely to survive after infidelity. Trust becomes an issue after someone has been unfaithful. Yunior, the main character in this story, encounters conflict as he struggles to move on with his life after his fiancée discovers that he has been unfaithful. Over a six-year period, the author reveals how his unfaithfulness has an effect on his health and his relationships.
In this paper I am writing about marriage and infidelity in modern life and the books we have read in class. Marriage is a mutual bond in which a man and a woman decide to be with each other until they die. Infidelity is basically when the man or woman in a relationship cheat on the other person, without them knowing.
...beral - perhaps amoral - society, adultery can be justified if we are truly in love or somehow deceived in marriage. There are many in our society today that would teach that adultery is not a great sin, but rather the guilt is the sin. They would say, "I am no devil, for there is none." In general, if you declare something not to be a sin, or at least a justifiable sin, you can do away with the guilt. According to Christian theology, however, there is a catch that states, in 1 Corinthians 32:12, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." When we know of our self-deception perfectly, hell has arrived, the day has passed, and we are no longer able to repent. From a Christian's perspective, you can deny or disagree with what God declares to be sin, but only temporarily ...
In today's society, fidelity is something that most people no longer pay mind to. It has become so common to lie or cheat in a relationship that it is not looked at as a loss of moral values for most of today's modern and more liberal society. It is rather unfortunate because I believe that the ability to maintain proper morals and values, or to instill them into those that are our future plays an important role in our lives today.
One of the major conflicts in The Crucible is the fact that John Proctor committed adultery. By dissecting his affair with Abigail Williams it is evident that the witch hunt would have never happened. Did Abigail seductively entice John and lure him to stray or did he do the seducing? Abigail wanted John as her husband and she wanted him so bad she took down a town in the process.
A world that demands perfection is only more likely to create imperfections. In the article “Who’s Cheating Whom?” written by Alfie Kohn, he deconstructs cheating in school from why students cheat to the underlining cause. He sheds light on the fact that cheating could in fact be mainly caused by the environment our culture has created for students. Cheating is most often seen in situations where students find what they’re learning to be boring or something they have no interest in. Many social scientists also believe cheating is a result of both the educational system and society valuing and rewarding the high grades over actual learning and teaching. Due to this competitive environment created in school
Adultery by definition is voluntary having sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than his or her lawful spouse. It is part of the ten commandments and a law that the Puritan village frowns upon. During the Puritan time period, crimes for adultery ended in execution. However Hester is only forced into wearing the scarlet letter due to the unknown information of who her husband and her lover were.
Infidelity is depicted as an extremely negative thing in the United States, and is often blamed for trust issues, psychologically damaging the spouse and their children, tearing apart marriages and families and more. People who commit adultery are often shamed and told how wrong what they did is and what a terrible person they are for doing it. According to the Journal of Martial and Family by the Associated Press, however, 41% of “marriages where one or both spouses admit to infidelity, either physical or emotional.” Clearly, while infidelity is generally viewed negative by society, many people either decide that it is not as negative as it is portrayed, or do not care and do it anyway. “The Lady with the Pet Dog” and “The Storm” both go against the typical view of adultery being a negative thing in a relationship by showing that it can actually have a beneficial outcome and leave some, if not all people happier.
In cultures past and present, families have always had some kind of tradition. Now there are some parents who don’t concern themselves with these traditions, and some that keep them close to heart. The ones that value their family traditions will teach them to their children and hope that their children will value them as much as they do and follow them as well. Some families have heirlooms that will get passed down from generation to generation. When comparing the short stories “Marriage is a Private Affair” by Chinva Achebe and “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, you can see that the both sets of parents have important roles in their children’s lives and they have traditions that they follow, conflicts arise when the family traditions
In order to understand adultery we must understand what it is and how does it start. Adultery-is the breaking of marriage. In the Ten Commandments the seventh commandment states “Thou shall not commit adultery”. Marriage and adultery are choices to be put into consideration before putting it into action. Adultery isn’t always about sex. Adultery in general can be looking at someone with a lustful eye. Usually in a marriage when a partners needs aren’t met they look for someone else outside of the marriage who can meet up to their expectations. It all starts with un-met needs such as money, lack of intimacy or none at all. Women are emotional beings who they are likely to with cheat once they find a man who is on the same emotional level with them. Men are likely to cheat if they feel unappreciated and not valued by their wife.
The first form of adultery is Accidental Infidelity. This can happen to the more careless person, but at the same time, to the person whose values and commitments are tenuous. They lack self-control and respect for both themselves and their spouse. Any situation where they are left alone with the opposite sex is an opportunity for an “accident” to occur. It was shocking to find out that most cases of infidelity occur with couples who are less than twenty -five years old, one would have thought early marriages where happy and care free (figure one).
For instance in the story The Storm illustrated the marriage life of two couples that are passing throughout a difficult phase of their marriage and infidelity is performed by men/women. The women characters represented a devoted wife and mother responsible of her duties. They display the kindness and affection that women should demonstrate to their family. Regarding their values, women can be driven by their emotions and commit infidelity. One of the couples, the wife cheat on her husband, but then she realizes that what she has done is unappropriated. However, she confirms her loved to her husband and she could not image her life without him and want to keep her family united. In society preconception about women cheating on their husband is inconsiderable and unacceptable. On the past is was a sin or even worst the life of women were the punishment of infidelity. On the other hand, the husband cheats on his wife who is in a trip with his sons, after the infidelity he communicates to his wife to stay longer if she wants. His wife Clarisse found appropriate to stay away longer from her husband, because
