On 17 February 2017, the English singer-songwriter Mike Rosenberg, better known as Passenger, released a short song which lyrics concerned Donald Trump’s recently acquired presidency. Despite the fact that he had never before felt the need to write such a political song, Rosenburg argues on his website, he does feel that it is everyone’s responsibility - as well as basic right - to speak about the things that they believe in (Rosenberg, 2017). He requests his audience, however, to take the song with a pinch of salt, as there is of course message behind it, but at the same time it is meant as a bit of fun and light relief (Rosenberg, 2017). In his song, called A Kindly Reminder, however, he clearly expresses his opinion about Trump’s acts through …show more content…
The chorus lines, saying ‘And if I could offer a kindly reminder / It’s not okay to grab women by the vagina’ refers to the offensive comments that Trump made about women during a recording for a television show in 2005. On a leaked tape, he said: ‘Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.’ The use of the word ‘vagina’ instead of ‘pussy’ - like Trump did - emphasises the vulgarity of Trump’s …show more content…
As a response to Trump’s apparent tendency to call him little Marco, Rubio said: ‘He is taller than me, he's like 6' 2", which is why I don't understand why his hands are the size of someone who is 5' 2”. Have you seen his hands? And you know what they say about men with small hands —‘. The insult soon started to lead its own life in the media, and, as an opponent of Trump, Passenger has adopted this presently famous insult to use against the president. Furthermore, the song addresses Trump’s desire for a great wall between Mexico and the United States, which he expects the Mexicans to
In the United States, the government has been run as a “representative” democracy. With every presidency comes change, however, one thing does not change and that is the State of the Union Address. Every President is tasked with giving a speech to address the state of the country specifically on the economy and the current budget. The speech is supposed to give American citizens a sense of hope, comradery, and belief that the leader of the free world is making every effort to make this country better for all who are apart of it. However, with the newly elected President, during his State of the Union Address he promoted division and intentional attacks towards immigrant in the United States.
The very title of the song endorses the use of the expression “bad b*tches”. In the music industry, the used of the word “b*tch” is not uncommon. It is most commonly used by men as a means of degrading women. Female rappers, like Trina, try to change what is a degrading word and turn it into a compliment. Female rappers like herself use this “bad b*tch” persona as a defense mechanism. They call themselves these distasteful words before a man has the chance to do it. They see it as strength and rejoice in beating them to the punch. It is a dangerous game they are playing. Throughout Trina’s song “Da baddest b*tch” she referred to herself as a bad b*tch multiple times. “I'm representin' for the bitches/All eyes on your riches” Trina’s depiction of a “bad b*tch” in this song is a woman that is concerned with money and the possession of money; A woman that would do anything to make money no matter the cost. This message is a harmful one. The word “b*tch” is not empowering; it is demeaning. Women give men an excuse to refer to them as “b*tches” because women call themselves’ and other women “b*tches” and “bad b*tches”. Women need to wake up and really that they will not be respected by men or either other women with such behavior. Calling yourself a “b*tch” or “bad b*tch” is a welcome mat to disrespect. Women should resist the catchy lyrics and clever hooks of the songs both me...
Rhetorical analysis assignment: President’s Address to the Nation. Since the 9/11 attacks, the Bush administration has been calling on all citizens and all nations to support his Middle East policy. Nonetheless, the U.S. has been involved in the Middle East struggle for more than half of the century, wars were waged and citizens were killed.
Gaining recognition through Food & Liquor, Fiasco’s popularity has grown tremendously. Much of the reason was due to his approach to rap. While he does rap about mainstream themes such as sex, money, and drugs, Fiasco also shares his concerns about the American government and politics, foreign affairs, and racism in our culture, capturing a more mature audience’s attention. Through his music, Lupe Fiasco represents the voice of Modern America by informing his listeners about the modern corrupt practices in the United States and asserting his opinions on them through his music. In his song “Bitch Bad”, Fiasco describes how the vulgar word “bitch” is used throughout American society carelessly and in ways it shouldn’t be due it's degrading denotation. His song “Strange Fruition” reiterates the message in Billie Holiday’s largely popular song “Strange Fruit” and incorporates the modern take on racism in the United States. The messages in both these songs portray the depravity in present American culture.
In his opening lines Obama shows his grief for the victims of the shooting stating: ‘I have come here tonight as an American who, like all Americans, kneels to pray with you today, and will stand by you tomorrow.’ In this quote Obama position himself with his people, showing his sympathy and comforts them by saying ‘I will be here for you.’
Social media has changed the game of politics. In today’s world, with the public looking to smartphones and tablets as their primary source of news, politicians have been forced to adapt the tone and content of their message to fit this new, more connected audience. Perhaps no politician understands this more than notorious billionaire, real estate tycoon, and now presidential candidate, Donald Trump. Through utilization of social media, more specifically Twitter, combined with his disregard for sounding too extreme or politically incorrect, Trump has gained a massive web audience - over four million followers and
Michael Cooper’s work in his NYT article “Tenor Will Sing Anthem at N.F.L. Game but Supports Athletes’ Kneeling Protest” explains the moral dilemma Lawrence Brownlee experienced when asked to sing the national anthem at a NY Jets and Baltimore Ravens football game. Brownlee is a tenor in the Metropolitan Opera, felt torn when asked to sing the anthem at the football game (Cooper). He understands the power the flag and anthem has on people like his father who was in military, as well as others who fought and love this country (Cooper). Brownlee expresses his gratitude for the opportunities he has being a man of color, comparing to the ones of his ancestors had during the time the anthem was written (Cooper). But since he is part of the minority,
“The beauty of me is that I am very rich” according to Donald Trump. His ignorance has lead him to do things that he shouldn’t being doing or has done. In the past few months he has been racist man that would insult people that are from a different race. When Trump started running for president he would insult and bully everybody in general not knowing the people’s stories. He made people seem like they are poor and have nothing to live for, Trump’s inability to see past his greed. He wants to separate the United States and wants people to think he is the best of the best; Trump should not be President.
Misogyny, objectification of women, and sexual assault, defined as “unwanted sexual contact, which includes sexual touching as well as rape” (Matlin, 2012, pg. 1). 294) is all included in this song. These themes are evident in the lyrics that read “Baby I’m preying on you tonight, hunt you down, eat you alive” and “maybe you think that you can hide, I can smell your scent for miles.” These lines imply that the stalker will not stop tracking her down until she is found, no matter what the woman does to hide or protect herself, because of this expression of an active and determined pursuit.
Before the debate began, I knew what to expect for the most part from both candidates, Donald Trump would bring his intensity and Hillary Clinton would show her political knowledge. I was very much on the side of Clinton before, during, and after the debate. Therefore, I will be slightly biased towards Donald Trump. Nevertheless, it is crucial for politicians to use persuasive techniques to enhance their speech to a wide audience, in this case the American people. Trump and Clinton differ tremendously in terms of what they believe is right for the United States. However, both candidates used persuasive techniques in the debate to try to influence the public of their legitimacy to be President of the United States. In the debate Donald Trump
sexual references. The song says, “ Whoa, rub you! Whoa, get with it now, Git it, git it,
Donald J. Trump, whose presidential campaign has doused the Republican Party with the verbal equivalent of napalm, has escalated his rhetoric to new levels of intensity before the crucial South Carolina primary this week. It is a vote that, if he wins, could erode the prospects of Republican leaders’ stopping his candidacy.
The Washington Post recently published an article that brought to light many of the degrading comments that Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, said about women in a conversation with Billy Bush. According to the article, Trump was recorded making inappropriate comments and bragging about how he kisses, gropes, and has sex with many women. After the recording of Trump was leaked to the media, he made a public statement apologizing for the comments that were made; however, according to the news article, instead of giving a genuine apology for his comments Trump pointed out the Bill Clinton had said and done far worse things than the comments that were made in that recording. Trump also used the term “locker-room banter” to describe
The song is basically singing about a girl that was a gold digger. Kanye West doesn’t know how to use language that is PG because in multiple lyrics, he uses the N word, the F word and other swear words. This song was originally to be sung by a female rapper, Shawnna, but she decided against it in her album. Kanye West decided that he could use it and he believed it would be a hit. Judging from the charts, it was. One of the lyrics says, “Now I ain't sayin she a gold digger, But she ain't messin with no broke n****s,” (Gold Digger, Kanye West) which is saying that she basically is a gold digger but Kanye isn’t just going out and saying it. Since this song was originally to be sung by a girl, we can infer that she was saying “I’m not a gold digger but I don’t date poor guys,” therefore she is avoiding the topic to some
Donald Trump is very effective in the article because of his easy to understand language, tone, use of parallelism, and style. As a politician running for office, he has to make sure the terms he uses can be understood by the audience without a fail. If he throws in an professional word, the audience could get caught on its definition rather than the content of his speech. Throughout the whole article, there is not one word or phrase that would require prior knowledge to comprehend. Even if the content is clear, a politician must speak the words appropriately to be taken seriously by the audience. If Trump were to be comedic about the severity of guns, the public would disapprove of him and his ratings would decline. Donald Trump’s tone is serious, caring, and a mixture between angry and passionate. He has to be serious about guns, since they are a deadly weapon. In addition, there have been numerous violent school shootings and riots that have occurred recently making the subject grimmer. He adds in a sense of compassion when he brings up the idea of fixing the mental
