Humans have been destroying the planet since we were able to stand on two legs. As a society, we need to work to reverse these terrible effects that our existence has on the planet. Sustainability is one way to begin reversing these effects, while still living our daily lives. In 2006, Al Gore presented his documentary, “ An Inconvenient Truth”, as a way to show the world the evidence behind global warming, climate change and the destruction of our planet. This documentary shocked the world. It was clear that changes needed to be made, but the destruction was more intense than previously thought. SInce this revelation in 2006, companies have tried to cut down on their greenhouse emissions, as well as offered sustainable products to their customers. Through a debate of morals and …show more content…
All of these things are happening due to human’s greedy actions and pollution. As a society, we need to band together to save our Earth. My family and I have taken many trips to Catalina Island over my lifetime and I have personally seen the increase of water levels. Caves that were easily accessible are now SCUBA diving locations. This is changing the ecosystems in the oceans, which have a large impact on our lifestyle. There are so many small things people can do to change these detrimental effects, including taking shorter showers, using a broom instead of a hose to clean a driveway, and buying energy efficient appliances and cars to lower carbon dioxide. If everyone made a small change toward sustainability, our environment and atmosphere would have an exponential decrease in global warming and temperature. After watching this film, I realized that I need to pull my weight and work to decrease my carbon footprint. I did not realize how much of an impact my daily habits have on the Earth and how easily I can change
Even though Gore in the film says about the global warning that “this is really not a political issue, so much as a moral issue,” I believe that it is as much a political issue as it is a moral issue. The truth about the global warming is inconvenient to many economically developed countries.
From a logical point of view, also known as logos, the video makes strong claims that are well supported with visuals, facts and statistics. The major claim made in the video was, humans are the cause of climate changes drastic alterations in recent years. This claim is well supported by facts such as the rise of the industrial revolution and the excessive burning of fossil fuels by human beings. These facts are supported by charts, definitions of terms, cited sources and powerful visuals. The video also suggests logical solutions to aid in decreasing the amount of climate change for the years to come.
In “The Day After Tomorrow” a climatologist’s warning of the possibility of massive cataclysmic climate changes caused by global warming go unheeded. His predictions of the consequences of such actions just so happen to occur sooner than anyone had ever expected. This movie served as the ultimate example what could happen if as a world community we do not clean up our acts. Continued consumption of nonrenewable resources, increased carbon dioxide emissions and further depletion of the Ozone layer could though most likely not on the scale illustrated occur in one form or another. The moral of this film is summed up by Dennis Quaid’s character in the last scene when he mutters his last few lines stating that hopefully humani...
In my opinion you get sucked into the movie and you start to actively think about each image that comes up onto the screen and the music is playing in the background, intersects with your emotions and makes you critically think about the world that you live in.The environment is one of the most important topics to me as not only does it affect my life, but many generations in the future, It encompasses all of the topics because it is affected by the other two so much. With overpopulation comes stripping of the resources and clear cutting which causes a violent effect on the environment not only damaging the ozone layer but, the creation of pollutants into our air and even our ground water. With more population comes more manufacturing and some countries would rather make a product more inexpensive than environmentally friendly. In the case of religion, some people or countries for that matter believe that their faith is telling them to go to war over their beliefs. When war ensues again the environment is damaged. With bombings, fires and even terrorist attacks comes runoff of chemicals into the ground as well as pollutants into the air. I fear that the generations after mine will be left without enough resources or have an impossible job of trying to correct what this generation has
The most interesting part about the movie “Disruption” was the turn out of the march. It was very interesting seeing how the outcome of the march would be all because of how it was well advertised. They advertised the march in a way that everyone could see how it can affect their lives. They also showed those who have already been affected to talk about how they felt. This was a way that people could understand how their future would look in a few years. They added important people in the video such as President Obama; to show how much he cares about others along with his life. This was another way to catch the audiences attention, but to also inform those who do not know. Another part of the movie that I thought was very interesting was where they showed the effects of climate change. They should pictures of how bad these climate changes actually affected the world. Such as, damaged houses, roads and rubble everywhere. It was interesting to be able to actually see what these disasters actually look like and how bad they changed that part of the world. Another thing I believe is very interesting about climate change is that, if it affects one place it affects many other places as well. Therefore if you want to help the climate change around where you live, you also have to help change the climate around the
This movie demonstrated the effects of global warming by setting a scenario where a second ice age had occured because of societies poor protection of the earth. One way this movie proved itself to be influential to society so they can learn from their mistakes, is through the box office earnings. The movie made major sales on opening weekend with over $68,000,000 earned in ticket sales. The movies domestic total gross was $186,740,799 (“The Day After Tomorrow”, boxofficemojo.com). The fact that the movie made so many sales, shows that it had quite a good reputation during the time period which means people enjoyed it. This proves that this left an impact in people’s lives which eventually led others to watch it also. Another reason is that Yale researchers, explained how The Day After Tomorrow also helped increase awareness on climate change, and encouraged people to consider how their actions could help create a similar environmental crisis as described in the movie. A survey was taken and people who did and did not watch the movie, were asked how likely do they think that certain events in the movie will occur in the next 50 years due to global warming. 80% of the people who watched it agreed there would be more intense storms. 40-66% of the people who watched the movie believed in food shortages, flooding, disease, and a new ice age. The percentages of the people who didn’t watch the movie were almost 10% lower in all the categories (“The Day After Tomorrow”, weforum.org). This itself compares people who were influenced by the movie, versus people who were not because they did not see it. People had a stronger feeling and thought that if the environment is not properly taken care of, scenarios created in the movie would come true. This shows how a simple film was able to allow the audience to learn from mistakes they are
These are conflict, poverty, instability, migration, unrest, collapse, capacity, and dependency. This film serves as a wakeup call to the audience because climate change is a very critical problem that people should address as soon as possible. It also explicitly shows that climate change is in fact in our midst and is not just a myth or a theory as some would say.
Once the damage is done, it cannot be reversed. This is important because it acts as wake up call to those watching the movie. If we don’t begin to stop the destruction of the world, we could end up like the characters in the movie. To add to that, Steve Cutts’ piece on “Man” acknowledges the way that humans act toward issues on the environment. In the video, a middle-aged, slightly overweight, white man appears on Earth in an arrogant fashion.
The short film by Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis’s 2015 film, “This Changes Everything”, talks about bringing change among the climate change and we need to start acting. The film focuses mainly on capitalism vs climate. The film takes us on a journey throughout the world, but mainly concentrate on Alberta-Canada, Halkidhiki – Greece, India, Beijing China, Washington – DC, and Germany. The film shows what can happens when the capitalism address the serious issues on climate change and how they hand the situation. It shows us how capitalism has the upper hand over the people for environment issues. Throughout the film the people said” the government is willing to destroy the environment for industrial product”. It is proven that plays the biggest
In reference to the beginning of his speech, he does not plan on reaching out to average citizens to take action, but instead people with higher positions who have the power to make a change as he gives “thanks to the distinguished climate leaders assembled [there] who are ready to take action” (2). In addition, he says that “after 21 years of debates and conferences it is time to declare no more talk” (3-4). His use of candid tone touches the viewers logical thinking, informing them that his audience withhold a position where they have given speeches and made comments on global warming but have yet to take action; something most political leaders do. Furthermore to the fact that his audience carries a higher political position, Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech gives the reader an understanding that these world leaders have knowledge about global warming as he states “I do not need to throw statistics at you, you know them better than I do, and more importantly, you know what will happen if this scourge is left unchecked” (2). In this statement, he creates more of a critical tone by using the word “scourge”.
The video makes it sound like even if we change our lifestyles it will still not be enough to save the planet. In the video it explains how people are using way too much stuff and that this is particularly due to the fact that our economy is set up in a way that makes it more desirable to buy things. During the video Annie Leonard was very opinionated. Her video makes it sound like there is no hope for saving the planet earth. The only thing she talked about in the video is the negative aspects and did not provide her listeners with any hope or an alternative way to help the planet.
The video is more about what people need to do in order to protect the environment. The social issue that is presented in the video is that people are not protecting oceans though oceans are source of their life. This is a social issue because it is a problem that is preventing the community from developing. In fact, people need oxygen so as to breathe so if they are destructing oceans, they are reducing oxygen in the earth. This is a significant social problem because if there is a reduction of oxygen on earth many people will die.
The movie entitled “An Inconvenient Truth” is based on a cosmopolitan problem about global warming. Mr. Al Gore uses a lot of catastrophic videos to remind us the harm and damage of global warming. At the end of the movie, he illustrates some misconceptions and appeals to everyone to pay more attention to the current environment phenomenon. He thinks everyone has responsibility to protect our planet.
Preview of Main Points: First of all, I will share with you what the film “Inconvenient truth” is all about. Secondly, I will discuss why people ignore the big picture and how we can help our planet.
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
