In "The Story of an Hour," by Kate Chopin setting can be defined in many ways, with many examples. Not only do all these examples of setting go hand-in-hand with each other, but the character's current situation as well. Mrs. Mallard is living in the 1800s as a housewife; she just discovered that her husband divorce been found dead, and her reaction is rather unexpected. Mrs. Mallard should be looked at in respects to her setting in the means of the time period, season, and location. Mrs. Mallard constantly whispers to herself, "free! free! free!" or something along the lines of such.
