Queen Victoria Aimee Wilkinson Queen Victoria was a strong female figure of the 18th century, leading into the 19th. She was born to rule and was the longest serving British monarch and ruled for almost 64 years. She created the Victorian period, led battles, created her own rules, and lived a family life. Princess Alexandrina Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819 in London. She was the only child of Edward, (Duke of Kent, 4th son of George III), and his wife Victoria Maria Louisa of Saxe-Coburg. Her father died when she was just eight months old. She became heir to the throne, as her three uncles, George IV, Frederick Duke of York, and William IV), did not have any living children. She lived a quiet, secluded childhood in Kensington Palace with her mother and a large amount of German-speaking residents. German was Victoria's first language, though she soon mastered the English language. On June 20, 1837, Princess Victoria became Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. Many said that she was too young and immature for the throne. Over the next few years the young queen faced many problems, She faced epidemics (cholera, typhus), crop failures and economic collapses, riots over enfranchisement and the repelling of the Corn Law. But, she overcame all of it and created a golden age for England. The Victorians invented the modern idea of "invention". They created the concept that humans can create solutions to their problems. Science also progressed greatly during the heydeys in the Victorian period. Hospitals were established and began to utilize surgical treatments due to the breakthroughs in anesthetics and antiseptics. Politics were very important to the people. She died on Tuesday, January 22nd, 1901, at half past six in the evening. She was 81 years old. Victoria had written instructions on how she wanted her funeral to go. Once again, she wore white instead of black, and had her wedding veil on. Little things that hold memories were placed in the casket with her. One of Albert’s dressing gowns was placed at her side, along with a plaster cast of his hand, and a lock of John Browns hair and a photo of him covered in flowers in her left hand. Also, she had on the wedding ring of John Brown’s mother, given to her by him in 1883. She was laid to rest in the mausoleum beside Prince Albert. Queen Victoria led a dramatic and stressful life. Many of things happened to her and she will always be a major part in history.
