Chang-Rae Lee the author of the ‘Native Speaker’ novels introduces his audience to a character named Henry who was a Korean but he is trying to absorb the American culture and fit into the society and become a Korean-American. His Korean heritage is easily noticeable and runs through with daily actions even as he tries to fit into the American society which is his new country. Henry was brought up in a Korean way of life and the life skills learnt then are still applicable in his adult life. Lee tries to show his reader how American immigrants such Henry normally found it difficult trying to fit in the foreign nation and find their identity there.
Lee tries to bring up the position of human as a form of capital to his audience. Henry the main character in the ‘Native Speaker’, had mixed reaction of being torn in between two types of worlds; the world that was filled with market desires globally and the political world mainly concerned with the representation of the cultural minority persons in the region. The majority normally have the say any priority when it comes to decisions making but the minority are always left behind since they may not have the relevant support to sustain their decisions or arguments. Due to this reasons politicians rush to represent the minority populations and at times it may be for personal interests and gains.
Henry Park’s life experience as an American immigrant is described further in his work place. He works for the Glimmer and company which deals with information service run by Hoagland who happened to be the senior supervisor and Henry normally worked under him. Chang-Rae Lee’s Native Speaker further dramatizes aspects of the immigrants experience when we find John Kwang going openly and confidently to Henry Park the main character and reveals about the one part that they only need. This party is to advocate mainly for jobs, security and quality education for its people. Lee in this part tries to reveal to his reader about hints of discrimination that the immigrants may be suffering due to their ethnicity. Having a part that represents then with its objectives being to push for jobs security especially safe streets and quality education may provide the reader with hints that such certain factors were not available for immigrants and had to push for them through their representatives who termed as ‘minor politicians’ compared to the US representatives that formed the larger part of the political field in the nation.
