The prawn wrapped in crispy rice noodles was a great way to start and for the main course, the Thai Barbecue Curried Chicken and papaya salad was a good option as well. An interesting experience at the restaurant is that they have a Rice Master who helps guests choose the type of rice to have with their main course. Saffron offers four types of rice to accompany the meal and each will bring a complete different fragrance and taste to the dish. The options were the green panadan rice, white jasmine fragrant rice, brown rice, and the restaurant’s namesake, the yellow saffron rice. Overall it was a pleasant dining
One of the most interesting indigenous groups in the world is the Batek of Malaysia, this is a group of people that live in the oldest rain forest of peninsular Malaysia. Orang ASli means “Original people” in the native Malay Language, and they truly are the original people of the land. Being a nomadic group of hunters and gatherers, means that they are at the mercy of the land and the elements for survival. Batek beliefs note that, the rainforest was created by “superhuman” beings for the Batek to use and will destroy the world and everything on it if the Batek were ever to leave the rainforest ( K.M. Endcott 1979a; Lye 2004). The Batek believe that the “superhuman” beings created the forest for the Batek to harvest, build houses in, and provide also to decorations for their ceremonial rituals.
Reading Catfish and Mandala reminded me of my cultural closeness through food. Due to being bi-ethnic I learned how to cook food from both my ethnicities, however there were times when I found myself acting like a foreigner towards certain dishes. A prime example was when I had Chitlins or pig intestines. I had eaten menudo, thanks to my Hispanic mother and this was the first time I had Chitlins, an African American dish via my paternal grandmother. Unlike Menudo, which to me has an appetizing smell and taste, Chitlins were a gray stringy putrid smelling dish. Remembering the utter dislike I obtained from that African American dish, reminded me of Pham’s experience with Vietnamese food. While there are some dishes people can’t stand, most usually embrace a dish from their culture and that helps ease some of the pain or discomfort.

There are specials offered at every meal depending on the season and the catch of the day. Chef Vanzile says that he plans the menu around what fresh fish and produce look the best rather than what is trendy. However, there is still a great deal of ambition evidenced in the menu. Some recent specials included Mahi chowder and blackened salmon with Romesco cream as well as more expected fare such as sautéed crab cakes and a shrimp omelet. Fish and chips were the special on St. Patrick’s Day, an Irish themed-meal for diners to enjoy.

Madagascar’s cuisine can be clearly marked by its sheer simplicity. The food is prepared without too many spices, but the lack of spices does not make the food dull and bland. Cuisines of France, China, India and also East African and Arabian cultures have all made their influence felt in Madagascar. The traditional cuisine of Madagascar consists mainly of rice. The rice is called “Vary” and it is typically eaten with some accompaniment, which is called the “Laoka”. As you move down the country towards the southwest regions, you will get to eat rice that may be supplemented or replaced by ground maize. However rice is the main diet of the natives, and is available in bounty. The native people have become very resourceful in developing huge numbers of scrumptious preparations with this one simple grain.

Just to the northeast of the Australian northern coastline, lies a series of islands that construct what is referred to as the “Melanesia sub-region”. The tropical marine water of the Carol Triangle surrounds the Melanesian sub-region, and it extends from the eastern border of the island of New Guinea in the northeast, stretching to the southeast corner to include Fiji, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. Consequently, the Melanesian sub-region features some of the most enduring-undiscovered landscapes of our modern times. In the heart of the Melanesian sub-region sits the world’s second largest island – New Guinea. The eastern portion of the island of New Guinea along with the islands of Bougainville, New Britain, and New Ireland describe the geographic-borders of the Country of Papua New Guinea (PNG). PNG is located along the tropical geographic region of the Pacific Ring of Fire between 0o and 12o latitudes, where it receives rainfalls that range between 950 and 10,000 mm per annum (map). This equatorial location along with favorable natural and anthropogenic conditions allowed for a great number of astounding diversity of terrestrial vegetations to evolve and dictate PNG’s landscape. PNG’s landscape is dominated by multiple ecological formations, primarily forests that cover 78% of the total land area. Furthermore, the diversity of PNG’s terrestrial vegetations starts with beach grasses, on coastal lines, moving inland towards lowland tropical forest, and ending mountaintops alpine forests (table).
Ever since Sunset Beach has been officially opened to the public, there has been a drastic increase of tourists present. Television programs concluded that at least a thousand people visit the beach everyday. Reasons for their stay are that they feel comfortable with the environment that surrounds the beach front, people who are at the beach are joyous and numerous activities to enjoy, and the fresh scent of the sparkly waters, make the visitors feel calm and pleasurable. So I decided to take a trip there.
