There isn’t much that inspired Rainbow Rowell (Yes that is on her birth certificate, Rainbow) besides wanting to have an outlet to write down jokes. Her writing was more influenced by her life instead. Attachments takes place in Nebraska around the Omaha region. From what activities the characters do such as playing Dungeons and Dragons to what type of job can mostly relate back to her life. The plot of the story; IT dude reading people’s emails to make sure they aren’t using it for personal use actually happen to Rowell. When she was working back in the 1990’s the company she worked for got some computers and had “Big Brother” watching over the emails being sent. This is probably due to his all-around personality. I really enjoyed when Lincoln(28-year-old man) went into the break room and Doris(60-year-old lady) was restocking the vending machines. Lincoln offered her some of his mom’s favourite food when he saw her eating a turkey sandwich. This spiraled into a relationship which would be worth it at the end of the book. Not only do I think this character isn’t flawed but every character was extremely well thought out. The personalities stayed realistic and there wasn’t an action that distracted me from reading. If I could change something about Lincoln it would be courageous, to not procrastinate. I’m saying this because Lincoln almost lost the Beth and Doris had to come and save his little behind. He keeps saying I’m going to talk to her, I’m going to talk to her but he never did and instead wrote a note when he quit. Doris came in like the knight in shining armour, bragged about Lincoln to Beth. One character that reminded me of someone I knew was Dean. If Alan was to grow up Dean’s personality would be extremely similar to Alan’s. I say this because of how is extremely outgoing, a lady’s man, then finally settles down with one lady after being through god knows how many
In my opinion, the flow is very inconsistent. In my opinion some parts where boring, but some parts kept me on the edge of my seat. The only commentary I would have for the characters in “Chasing Lincoln’s Killer” would be on the two men who just hid in the town. John Wilkes Booth and David Herold honestly had the best shot at surviving by running into the countryside. I believe that this book is not for everyone, but I think this book is great for avid biography or American history book readers like myself.
The author chose to do all of these things because they all are crucial to the story, and they help to make the book better. They make it more interesting, less confusing, and more professional. All of these elements were probably well planned and thought out because they are so important. I think that the characters make the story good or bad, and that’s the author’s job - to create the characters and the ideas and things like that, and that’s why we’re doing this project: to evaluate what the author has presented with these characteristics.
Fans of the novel found that the way the novel is written, you never want to put it down and the action keeps things moving and is quite entertaining. The novel pulls you in and makes you love each of the main characters in it. This is a great series for anyone to read, and it is audience friendly for whoever reads them. There is quite a bit of suspense that will make the novel exceed readers 's expectations, and the twists and turns keeps you guessing and lets nothing be predictable. I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. A reader is meant to connect with the characters in emotional ways, understanding and following through their footsteps throughout the story. It is crucial to have sub-characters that create tension along with comfort, so the readers are able to connect with them through simple experiences. I was very moved by Christian’s character, because his decisions were connected with real life happenings. He loved a beautiful woman, but he wasn’t able to truly make her love him because of his lack of intelligence. Stories like these happen in everyday life, making his character even more respected because we’re bound to go through similar experiences. I was very pleased with his character features, even when he is unintelligent; he was able to connect with me, and the story perfectly.
David Berkowitz, otherwise known as the “Son of Sam”, was notorious for his crimes committed between 1976 and 1977 that ended the lives of six innocent victims and wounded several others in New York (“David Berkowitz Biography”, n.d.). At first, police did not make a connection between the murders because there was nothing unusual about them; all the victims were shot with a 40 caliber gun, not fairly unusual during this time or place especially since the killings were over an extended period of time. Each of these characters posses a different personality which contributes to the book as a whole. Throughout the book I felt connected to one character, that character was George. George and I share similar qualities and our lifestyles can relate. One major characteristic I found in George is his ability to take the initiative in whatever he is doing, therefore showing his sense of leadership qualities. This caught my eye automatically since I am the type of person to stand up and demonstrate my leadership to others.
In understanding others, one must first understand our own family background and how it affects our understanding of the world. Conversely, family systems draw on the view of the family as an emotional unit. Under system thinking, one evaluates the parts of the systems in relation to the whole meaning behavior becomes informed by and inseparable from the functioning of one’s family of origin. These ideas show that individuals have a hard time separating from the family and the network of relationships. With a deeper comprehension of the family of origin helps with the challenges and awareness of normalized human behaviors. In regards to TMT, close relationships offer security, protection, and give meaning to life (Mikulincer, Florian, & Hirschberger, 2003).
Erik H. Erikson was a significant psychologist that greatly changed the field of child development. In the 1950’s, Erikson advanced a Freudian approach in development. He viewed that social development as a series of eight challenges that people have to overcome. Each challenge has an outcome that’s either favorable or unfavorable. The outcome drastically affects a person’s personality. For example, in a favorable outcome, the result can leave a positive feeling. With a positive outlook, it’s easier for a person to cope with challenges in life. An unfavorable outcome can leave a person at a disadvantaged for the future. During the first couple challenges, Erikson believed that the caregiver has a great impact on a child’s development (Romero).
Mary Main was Ainssowrth student. She therefore introduced another fourth category of attachment styles with her attachment studies with adults. During her longitudinal research project alongside her colleague Goldwyn on middle class children’s attachment styles, they found that about 79% of the time attachment styles remained constant from 18 months to 6 years of age (in Brandell & Ringel, 2007,). However in their observations about 5%) that did not fit into Ainsworth’s classification of attachment styles, which they called ‘disorganized/disoriented attachment’ (Main & Solomon, 1986, 1990). These children were fearful and engaged in repetitive or aggressive behaviors. Their behaviors at reunion were unpredictable. They displayed contradictory behavior patterns such as approaching and then suddenly avoiding or exhibiting misdirected behavior patterns such as crying when the stranger leaves or stereotypical behaviors such as rocking, hair pulling or freezing. The mothers of these children were either depressed or had unresolved grief due to early loss of own parents (Main & Solomon, 1986). In this type of attachment, there is no or very little organized strategy to cope with stress and to form an attachment relationship with the caregiver, because here, the attachment figure is the direct cause of distress or fear. An abusive, abandoned and frightening caregiver is the source of fear and the protector at the same time. The infant shows signs of distress and displays avoidant and inconsistent reactions in the presence of the caregiver (Bakermans-Kranenburg & van IJzendoorn, 2007; Stams et al, 2002).
Attachment patterns of a child are developed by the use of strange situation protocol where the attachment of a child is assessed between 12 months and 20 months of the child development. This procedure is not clinical and is used only to supplement the clinical diagnosis procedure called Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), which will be discussed at a later stage of this essay. In the strange situation protocol, a child, and the caregiver are put in an environment with varying conditions and the attachment behaviour of the child is observed. Bowlby’s attachment theory has greatly influenced practice. His theory of attachment explains the importance of having a figure that the child shares a strong bond with. Having an attachment can significantly support a child’s development as Barbara Woods suggests that “his theory of attachment proposed that attachment is innate in both infants and mothers, and that the formation of this attachment is crucial for the infants development” Wood, B (2001, p.53). Bowlby believed that forming an attachment will help a child develop in all areas e.g. emotionally, physical and mentally. However if they did not form an attachment in the sensitive period, the child may have issues or problems in their cognitive, emotional and social development. “Attachment is as essential for the child’s psychological well-being as food is for physical health claimed Bowlby” Wood, B (2001, p.54). Bowlby claimed in this statement that attachment is a necessary thing which a child needs in order to develop healthily.
H. Waters and colleagues (Waters, Rodrigues, & Ridgeway, 1998) developed a script-like approach to study the mental representations of attachment, particularly to assess secure base representational knowledge. According to script theory, mental representations of events are formed with repeated experiences. For a specific situation, a script describes an appropriate series of events as well as actors, actions, and props needed to reach a goal. A goal can be something simple such as going to bed or going out for dinner (Nelson, 1986; Schank & Abelson, 1977). Other researchers view scripts as cognitive representations of routines or ways that individuals typically approach errands and problems. In sum, scripts provide a cognitive tool for individuals to help them navigate their complex world (Nelson, 1986).
