Psychoanalysis is a science that deals with the interaction between conscious and unconscious processes and laws of mental functions of an individual. Psychoanalysis is used to understand subjects of semiotics. Psychoanalysis is also used to understand the unconscious development that comes into play in society and how that shapes us as humans and as a society. Sigmund Freud did not discover the unconscious mind set, rather he developed the concept the most thorough. Structural hypothesis is part of Freud 's mental functioning of id, ego, and superego. Id is the psychic drive, impulsive, that is the source of energy, yet lacks direction. Ego consists of functions that relate to an individuals environment, the mediator between id and superego, the reality checker. The superego consists of moral perceptions and aspirations of an individual. The superego is mostly an unconscious psyche. Foxy Brown is a 1974 blaxploitation movie that deals with revenge and power. In Foxy Brown the stereotypes were nothing new. Foxy Brown was the protagonist of the movie, yet she also portrayed a servant for the mafia when she infiltrated the organization as a sex slave. Link Brown represented the “ghetto”, he was a street hustler, he represented an uneducated black men, who was looking for a way out in the wrong areas. Stereotypes are used to validate the perceptions that have been held in society. It is a form of control and repression of the unconscious desires of a subject. The Breakfast Club is a movie about five high school students who are forced to serve a Saturday detention, as well as write a lengthy essay about who they think they really are. I chose to psychoanalyze this particular film due to the sheer pleasure i receive when i watch it. The Breakfast Club epitomizes high school cliques and dramatizes each of the respective student’s need to belong. All of the main characters in the movie, Brian, Claire, Bender, Andrew, and Allison, have very distinct psychological issues that they are dealing with internally. In this paper, i will attempt to breakdown and analyze the schemas of each of the teens to better understand the emotional and physical plights that they undergo on a daily basis.
In all the psychology of the personality is difficult to understand, because trying to read what someone is thinking about you and your personality is a tough process. Stereotyping is a normal part of every one’s life. Humans, by nature, classify things. We name animals and classify them by common characteristics but stereotyping can have negative repercussions, and everyone does it. In a recent study it was proven that everyone has an unconscious need to stereotype (Paul). In Junteenth and The Invisible man, Ralph Ellison argues that stereotyping can cause mayhem by making the people become something they are not.

During his education in the medical field, Freud decided to mix the career fields of medicine and philosophy to become a psychologist (“Sigmund Freud” n. pag). During his research as a psychologist, he conceived the Structural Model Theory, which he discussed in his essay Beyond the Pleasure Principle. Stereotypes can be defined as sweeping generalizations about members of a certain race, religion, gender, nationality, or other group. They are made everyday in almost every society. We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain all the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations. By stereotyping, we assume that a person or group has certain characteristics. Quite often, we develop these ideas about people who are members of groups with which we have not had firsthand contact. Stereotyping usually leads to unfair results, such as discrimination, racial profiling, and unnecessary violence, all behaviors which need to be stopped.

The movie Psycho, is one of the most influential movie in Cinema history to date. The director Alfred Hitchcock, wanted to test many of the conventions of movie making that was common at that time. Alfred Hitchcock movie broke many cultural taboos and challenged the censors. Alfred Hitchcock showed a whole bunch of at the time absurd scene, for example: Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) dying naked while taking a shower, Norman Bates with split personality disorder, and the first ever flushing toilet shown in a movie. Because from the late 1920's to the late 1950's, movies were made usually go around the story, and usually with a lot dialogue. This movie gives the audience an experience that was much more emotional and intuitive. The psychodynamic theory focuses on the unconscious mind. Freud’s credence is that different mental forces operate in the mind. The unconscious mind can be described as being like an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg represents the part of the mind that is conscious, everyday thoughts. The iceberg just below the water’s surface represents the pre conscious, thoughts and information that can be retrieved easily. And finally the base of the iceberg is the unconscious part of the mind where fears, traumas and bad experiences are contained, almost impossible to retrieve.

The id, ego, and superego are the three mental zones that encompass our psyche. Each zone has a specific function: The id functions on the pleasure principle; the ego on the protection of the individual; and the superego on protection of society.
