The Endless Choices of Authors
(An analysis of the author’s choice of elements in All The Light We Cannot See)
The overall greatness of a novel depends heavily on the writer’s ability to write it in the first place. Authors all around the world have different opinions about how a book should be set up, where it should take place, the structure of the chapters, and a number of other elements. The way that a book is written has a gigantic impact on how well the readers enjoy it and how they can also grow educationally from it. This theory that a writer determines the level of awesomeness in a book could be taken to the test if humans still refuse to believe it is true. For example, ten different writer could all be given the same storyline and

plot to write about, and it is extremely favorable that they would all write the story a different way. Almost certainly, there would be a favorite form of the story that fits best with the plot and keeps the reader hooked while still allowing them to think a little bit deeper about certain things going on in the story. Novels all around the globe have been given countless awards for the creativity of the authors and the way that they have set up their story to reach its maximum potential. On particular novel that it structured in a very unique way is Anthony Doerr’s, All The Light We Cannot See. The very first and most obvious thing that Anthony Doerr does in his wonderful story is start somewhere in the middle. In other words, Doerr doesn’t begin the start of his book at the very opening of the story plot. When the reader begins this novel, they read, “At dusk they pour from the sky. They blow across the ramparts, turn cartwheels over rooftops, flutter into the ravines between houses...Urgent message to the inhabitants of this town, they say. Depart immediately to open country.” (p.3). At this point, the reader is completely and utterly confused about what has happened so far in this plot; however, this is used in the author’s favor, because multiple readers begin to infer and guess about what has happened that they missed. This missing information gives them that extra push to keep on reading to find out what is happening and why someone or something must immediately get to open country. On the other hand, starting in the middle of a story line can be confusing for some readers. In this case, they may be discouraged from continuing on with the story as a result of their fear for being further puzzled or lost. Nonetheless, All The Light We Cannot See, has proved to be extremely pleasing to numerous audiences, gaining the title of “#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER”. Not only does Anthony Doerr start in the middle of his story line, but he switches back and forth between things that have already happened, and things that the reader still needs to be filled in on.
Using this method, Doerr creates a symbolic puzzle that his audience has the privilege of solving. At the beginning of section two in the novel, All The Light We Cannot See, it is titled, “Two - 8 August 1944” (p.93), and at the beginning of section three, it is title, “Three - June 1940” (p.105). The author continues to skip around in time for the duration of this novel, allowing the reader to slowly start to put different pieces of the puzzle together. This structural element helps out immensely with the build up, thickening, and suspension in the plot. Confused, yet curious and interested, Doerr’s audience has no choice but to keep on reading to find out why things are happening the way that they …show more content…
are. In Anthony Doerr’s, All The Light We Cannot See, Doerr also switches off very quickly between chapters, for he needs to keep up with two different sides of the story: the boy, Werner, and the girl, Marie-Laure. One chapter begins, “It’s summer and Marie-Laure is sitting in the alcove behind the library with Madame Manec and Crazy Hubert Bazin,”(p.259), and the very next chapter begins, “ Every day there is word of another victory, another advance...Werner is fifteen,”(p.262). The reader has to switch back from different sides of the story every few pages. This causes them to think a little bit more as they read, in order to remember what is happening to each person. This could be a negative element that the author has chosen because many readers have an easier time reading if they only have to look at one person’s perspective, and the story is told in one, chronological piece. Starting and stopping between new ideas and a whole different lifestyle of another character can be challenging for many, and even cause them to have to spend a longer time reading and connecting the dots. Although, a multifold of Doerr’s audience undoubtedly had little to no trouble reading this story fluently, and putting together the beautiful literary pieces of art that have been written. In conclusion, Anthony Doerr’s, All The Light We Cannot See, is a amazingly written, but difficult, piece of literature that has been enjoyed by numerous audiences around the world.
He includes elements in his novel that many other authors do not, including his short chapters that switch between two different characters and sides of the story, the way he doesn’t start his story at the introduction of the plot, and how he switches time periods occasionally. These factors can be very difficult, and perhaps even annoying in a way to some readers, but is unquestionably genius. Once audiences can put together all the pieces of the puzzle in this novel, they reveal how truly amazing and wonderfully written the plot
was.
Fans of the novel found that the way the novel is written, you never want to put it down and the action keeps things moving and is quite entertaining. The novel pulls you in and makes you love each of the main characters in it. This is a great series for anyone to read, and it is audience friendly for whoever reads them. There is quite a bit of suspense that will make the novel exceed readers 's expectations, and the twists and turns keeps you guessing and lets nothing be predictable. Some like the way this group of people bands together when they really need to and keep things together so they can all stop the
The parts that I found boring were when there was a lot of description going on from the author. I do realize that it is necessary to set up the scenes and locations so that us as readers can have a better understanding of what is happening in the book, however I felt like at times he went too far into detail and had me nearly sleeping at times, literally.
War was one of the most difficult and brutal things a society could ever go through. World War II was especially terrible because it affected so many people.World War II was centered in Europe and the people of the European countries felt the effects much more than many of the other countries that were also participating in the world war. In the book All the Light We Cannot See written by Anthony Doerr, the story took place during World War II in Europe, the center stage for the war. This war was one of the most difficult wars because it destroyed homes, displaced thousands, tore families apart, killed off loved ones, and forced people to make tough decisions they had to live with for the rest of their lives. In All The Light We Cannot See,
but his problem was making his book read like a novel. He accomplished this by
What impressed me most about the book was the incredible detail he used to describe people, places, events, and things. As I said, some people may find all this detail to be tedious. I however think that it was important to have such details to paint an accurate picture of ancient Rome.
After reading the opening chapters, I was surprised by the laid back, casual attitude Foster displayed. He did not go about explaining certain aspects of previously written novels in a way that was hard to understand. Foster explained things in great deal, but in good taste. He did not go on with boring information; he simply got his point across in a way that made me want to know more. Not only was his way of thinking and expressing his thoughts interesting, but the subjects he tapped into were interesting also. Foster connected things that surround our average day lives to literature, and the effect it brings to the literature. For example, Foster discusses vampires in on of the first few chapters. The majority of people have seen numerous movies about vampires, making it easy to connect with what he was talking about. His overall tone and strategy of writing was relatable and the least bit overwhelming, which quickly grabbed my attention and made me interested in things I would not normally be interested in.
Richardson's method of writing is kind of hard to comprehend at first. Every chapter would start off with a new character narrarating their story. You don't know who it is until a few sentences later. The chapter starts with a character, but some chapters would have two or three nararators with a couple paragraphs each character. Sometimes it would be confusing, but once I found out who was talking, I would sometimes have to reread the paragraph from the start to understand the situatiuon. Another thing that bothered, maybe it wasn't the authour's fault, was that many quotation marks were misplaced all over the book. the first few were tolerable, but after a while it got annoying. That bothered me much and like I said, I'm not sure if it was the author or the publisher. I don't really like the style, but it's what the author used to get many stories into one.

The style of the book is what made it so special. It was VERY easy to understand, and at the same time it was exciting. Some readers may think a tragic, but yet romantic novel is hard to understand, but what they don’t know is that all books are easy to read. You are just stopping yourself too soon to learn it. This book had no problems with being beautifully written and understandable.
...d in this quote, “The action of the story continues nearly nonstop pausing occasionally to look at the stars or talk about southern gentlemen but only for a short time before rushing ahead” (Daly 17). The action of the story can make the reader get bored of it quickly or it can continue to keep the reader interested. Some of the action was forced to keep the book going but overall it was not bad. Many young readers like reading a book with lots of action so this is why the book is such a big hit.
... the stupidity and courage of men. He did a great job of doing both. This book is really a classic because so many people know about it and still read it today, and it is over a hundred years old! It reminds me of how the U.S is today. Sure we are the greatest nation on the planet, however we still need to be reminded that we do not control everyone. We should be more humble and that is how the author felt as well. All the time I see on the news how people rebel and complain about stuff. When it comes down to it they don’t do jack! They just want to bitch about how the system cheats them. There were characters in the book like this in the novel too.
understanding. I am a skeptic. The characters that he incorporates within his story, help to. establish a sense of the conditions and hardships that the country is experiencing. experiencing, and the presence of fear throughout the whole of the populace.
He also never lets the story slow down or stop moving. There is always an unexpected twist which will astound you yet make perfect sense. Such as Teabing betrayal. It was totally unexpected yet it fit Teabings personality perfectly. He always wishes to have the upper hand. Another unexpected twist was that the Grail really wasn?t hidden in Great Britain in the Rosslyn which all the clues seemed to lead. Another unexpected twist was that both Opus Dei and the Priory of Sion both wished to keep the contents of the Grail hidden.
... well to portray how life actually was in those times. Most of his elements are true and add to the validity of the story and personality of the characters in it. He gives his readers a look into the world of a Southern style of life in the given time period.
For me, what stood out the most about this book is just the beautiful writing. I didn’t think I was going to like the book when we first were assigned to read it. I just kept the writing flow, and it was very evenly paced, and I found myself genuinely interested in this crazy world of Macando.
