Consuming an average amount of Salmon in one’s diet is proving to be one of the foods that can curb the desire to become violent. The experiments performed and carried out by Stephan Mihm, as well as other resources gathered, consider this to be somewhat accurate. Are we really able to determine which foods have this effect? Salmon is only one of many foods that contain Omega-3 Fatty acids.
The experiments that have been done to date however, by Mr. Mihm, have used Salmon; contains one of the highest levels of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, to test on prisoners and the evidence may suggest that once it became a regular source of their diet, their violent tendencies decreased over time. Significant improvements in their behavior have been reported when …show more content…

Omega-3 Fatty Acids are said to have an effect on prisoners, by decreasing violence and aggression. Mihm acknowledges that the environment and nutrition determine the actions of the prisoners. The poor environment and diet test the hypothesis that violent behavior is largely a product of a poor diet. Mihm also suggest that supplements can also be substituted, and it should have the same effect as having a meal containing Omega-3 Fatty Acids.
Mihn studies indicates that Salmon’s health benefits are the cause of the reduction of violence in prisoners however although salmon is healthier than other animal-based foods, particularly red meat, when other researchers compares salmon to truly healthy alternatives like plant-based protein, which has no cholesterol, and can be easier to source and cheaper, Salmon comes in a comfortable second on the Omega-3 Fatty Acid scale.
For example, a Nutritionist called John McDougall, MD, warns that “salmon is “half fat” and says eating it increases the risk of obesity and type-2 diabetes”. Salmon has very high levels of
Cholesterol. Fish-based Omega-3s has also proven to inhibit the action of insulin, which directly impacts blood sugar levels which can eventually lead to …show more content…

If they found a clear link between diet and violent behavior, it would always be a debate that, “Violence is a product of free will - Mihm, 2006, which is measured by cognitive ability. The perception that people choose to be violent will be argued, but according to Mihm “The belief that people choose to be violent may be irrelevant if the brain is not firing on “all cylinders” and it is safe to say that in most instances, our brain affects impulsive acts of violence (Mihm, 2006).” The link that we established between diet and violent behavior with the prisoners who were convicted of violent crimes shows, that their levels of Omega-3 were lower than usual. Omega-3 fatty acids develop the growth of neurons in the brain’s frontal cortex that controls impulsive behavior. Having average levels of Omega-3 fatty acids may keep violent impulses in check. It also implies that Omega-3 can also help people suffering from that effects of substance
