A Story from Start to Finish
Brian Doyle’s “Joyas Volardores” explores the life and emotions that come with being alive. This essay, even though it is written about hummingbirds, speaks about the hearts of many. To convey such emotion, Doyle intertwines long, detailed sentences with short and to the point ones all while telling a captivating story. In The Well Crafted Sentence, Nora Bacon describes a “both/and” (10) style of writing that can be used. This manner of writing showcases metaphor filled sentences that are seen as more pleasurable because they are paired with plain style sentences. By beginning his essay with compact, then leading into lengthy and descriptive sentences, Doyle accomplishes a both/and style of writing.

In her book, Bacon speaks of E.B. White who “strongly cautions against writing that calls attention to itself” (Bacon 9). But, she thinks the opposite of this. She believes that “the best writers also seek pleasure, perhaps for themselves as they write and certainly for us as we read” (10). Seeking pleasure from writing can come in multiple forms. At Boston University, Doyle read multiple stories, all of which are true, that he felt pleasure from and a connection with. To Doyle, a story shows so much more than just what meets the eye. A story should make you feel a connection. In “Joyas Volardores,” Doyle writes with much emotion, saying in it that “So much held in a heart in a lifetime. Throughout the article, Leonard Pitts Jr. makes it abundantly clear his disapproval of the "McBudget" strategy served up by the fast food mega giant. The mood portrayed could at best be described as complete and utter disbelief, with a bitter pinch of anguish. Metaphorically punching well-crafted, rational hole after hole into an exceedingly narrow-minded proposal, used to shade a harsh reality. Though subtle and straight forward, it's the underlining depths of the author's argument which truly bear the antagonizing weight in the piece. The masterful used of the word "bupkes" for example; conveys a rhetorical first strike. A Yiddish word meaning "next to nothing"; Pitts' particular choice of language supplemented a more culturally philosophical notion.
In Florence Kelley's speech to the people attending the NAWSA convention, she uses emotional appeal to motivate her audience to convince their male counterparts to legalize voting for women, and also to persuade the males to help put an end to child labor.
One of the biggest determinants for the success of a writer is engaging and maintaining the interest of a variety of readers. While there are endless approaches to telling a story, as well as many writing styles, the most effective writings are the ones that successfully impress a diverse audience. The essays Eating Chili Peppers and Conforming to Stand Out: A Look at American Beauty are two different styles of essays that unveil a similar search for self-gratification. While the essays cover different topics and the authors use different writing styles and approaches to engage the reader, they both unveil a similar underlying message of a search for self-gratification.

Last but not least, O’Connor confirms that even a short story is a multi-layer compound that on the surface may deter even the most enthusiastic reader, but when handled with more care, it conveys universal truths by means of straightforward or violent situations. She herself wished her message to appeal to the readers who, if careful enough, “(…)will come to see it as something more than an account of a family murdered on the way to Florida.”
As people age they will often still recall a good childhood story. A well told, meaningful story can go a long way when attempting to argue a point or convey information. In the essays, ''The Myth of The Latin Women: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria" by Judith Ortiz Cofer, "Gains and Losses" by Richard Rodriquez, and "Piecing It All Together" by bell hooks, the authors connect to the reader and create a better audience through their writing. Through the portrayal of a story the authors help the reader understand their point of view, they transfer information to the reader with better ease, and keep the reader engaged the authors argue a point or convey information more efficiently.
In the story, “The Killing Game”, Joy Williams, uses several diffenent types of writing skills to presuade the reader to see her views.
On December 10, 1950, in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the greatest literary minds of the twentieth century, William Faulkner, presented his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize. If one reads in between the lines of this acceptance speech, they can detect a certain message – more of a cry or plead – aimed directly to adolescent authors and writers, and that message is to be the voice of your own generation; write about things with true importance. This also means that authors should include heart, soul, spirit, and raw, truthful emotion into their writing. “Love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice” (Faulkner) should all be frequently embraced – it is the duty of authors to do so. If these young and adolescent authors ignore this message and duty, the already endangered state of literature will continue to diminish until its unfortunate extinction.
Ender is first shown as intelligent and skillful, and Peter shows the same attributes throughout the story. Ender uses his intellect to triumph over his bullies, and this translates to his experience in the Battle Room. He has to outsmart the enemy, rather than beat them physically, and it worked in his favor the majority of the time. Ender understands when he has to use his physicality to beat a bully, but also knows when he has to strategize to avoid a certain situation. When Ender is encountered by Bonzo after he won the battle by disobeying Bonzo’s orders, he has to use his judgement rather than his fists to get what he wants. Ender argued with Bonzo, “‘... I’ll pretend that you won this argument. Then tomorrow you can tell me you changed your mind.’ ‘I don’t need you to tell me what to do.’ ‘I don’t want the other guys to think you backed down. You wouldn’t be able to command as well’” (Card 87). Ender understands what his enemy, in this case Bonzo, wants, and knows how he can make both of them get what they want. He doesn’t resolve to violence when he knows that he can use a different method that benefits him. Ender’s intelligence and strategizing helps him overcome the difficulty he approaches throughout his life. Peter also uses his intellect to benefit himself throughout the events that happen.
In Flannery O’Connor’s fascinating essay “On Her Own Work,” she claims that what makes a story work is “probably some action, some gesture of a character that is unlike any other in the story, one which indicates where the real heart of the story lies. That would be the gesture which was both totally right and unexpected... a gesture that somehow made contact with mystery.”
The two essays, Splintered Literacies and Writing in Sacred Spaces, both revolve around the inherent “why” of storytelling. Each addresses a different facet, with the former delving into how the types and varieties of writing we experience affect our identities. Meanwhile, the latter explores the idea of thought concretization. Humanity developed writing as a tool to capture the otherwise intangible. Whether belief or abstract concept, the act of putting something in writing creates a concreteness, trapping the thought in a jar like a firefly. The thoughts and ideas we manifest onto the page or into the air give life to our knowledge, perpetuating its’ existence.
With an evident attempt at objectivity, the syntax of Passage 1 relies almost entirely on sentences of medium length, uses a few long sentences for balance, and concludes with a strong telegraphic sentence. The varying sentence length helps keep the readers engaged, while also ensuring that the writing remains succinct and informative. Like the varying sentence length, the sentence structures vary as complex sentences are offset by a few scattered simple sentences. The complex sentences provide the necessary description, and the simple sentences keep the writing easy to follow. Conversely, Passage 2 contains mostly long, flowing sentences, broken up by a single eight word sentence in the middle. This short sentence, juxtaposed against the length of the preceding and following sentences, provides a needed break in the text, but also bridges the ideas of the two sentences it falls between. Writing is a mirror of one's personality. When we write, we reveal a part of ourselves. We reveal our mind. We reveal our thoughts. If it is possible to exist, then it is possible to write, because writing is thinking, and thoughts are existence. This especially holds true to the mind of Edgar Allan Poe, who through writing time and time again about his love and loss through both poetry and general prose, generates the story of his life. In these pieces, not only does he create original plots, but deep within the fabric of these plots springs a background world of Poe's own life, deeper than any allegory he produces or any poem he completes. The dark corners of Poe's mind are distinctly represented in his entire work body. Experiences, mostly negative, are displayed as signs everywhere in each of his publications. Not everything is shown straight out, sometimes you have to search for hidden meaning. Sometimes, you have to think to understand thought. Intended or not, Poe left his imprint in "Annabel Lee," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "Eldorado," all of which tell thrilling tales. Many read the bare surface of Poe's bold narratives, and not much else. There is a deeper meaning to the text which connects the dream world to reality.
Students have been writing essays since education was formalized centuries ago. There are several formats that they are taught throughout the course of their formal education, two of the most common being; Narrative, and Descriptive. Both of these have distinct characteristics that define them, and while they share many similar qualities and are developed to make the reader immerse themselves in the story. Narratives tend to have the power to capture and persuade on a deeper level than most descriptive papers. Two prime examples are the narrative I Want a Wife by Judy Brady and the descriptive essay Fish Cheeks by Amy tan. While they both do an exceptional job at delivering a lesson Brady’s causes you to think from the beginning, her use of the rhetorical devices such as pathos, ethos, and logos are incorporated with a heavy use of sarcasm and harsh remarks that claws for the reader’s attention.
