Is a woman's strength determined by her endurance to stay in a hurtful relationship or is it determined by her ability to move on? The early twentieth century is known to women as the "era of exuberance." (Gilbert 1205) During the early twentieth century women began to find the answer to the question at hand deeply rooted within themselves. The answer for Katherine Anne Porter seemed to be her ability to move on based on the actions she chose in her real life. Does her literature tell a different story? Born in Indian Creek, Texas on May 15, 1980, Callie Russell Porter spent most of her life outside of the state of Texas. In 1915 after nine years of marriage to John Henry Koontz she divorced him claiming "nothing in common and physical abuse." (Davidson) At this point she changes her name to Katherine Anne Porter, her late-grandmother's name. At the young age of 25 Porter had already broken the role of a traditional woman that was known to that time period.

Does Amy’s beauty and mystique represent something deeper? In Katherine Anne Porter’s “Old Mortality,” there is an obvious obsession amongst most of the novella’s characters with Amy’s beauty. Most of the female characters throughout the novella are often compared to Amy by her family’s elders. These characters are often described as coming close to embodying Amy’s beauty (or not at all), but it is generally recognized that no one will ever be able to be quite as beautiful as Amy was. While there are a few descriptions of Amy’s physical appearance throughout the novella, there seems to be more of a focus on her careless behavior. Many of the novella’s central figures identify this kind of behavior as something that contributed to her charm
The film is portrayed in the past and present scenario setting. The story he reads to her is a love story about two teenagers named Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling), that met in the 1940’s at a carnival in Seabrook Island, South Carolina. As I look back on my past, I am pleased with my life, my accomplishments and my failures. I can say there may have been some rough times but I wouldn’t do anything over. I am now sixty-nine years old and feel it is time to reminisce. I was born on September 7th, 1533 at Greenwich Palace. Of course I do not remember this but whom does it hurt to start from the very beginning. When I was barely three my mother was executed, I may have not a vivid memory or memory at all but later on in my life, it affected me. I wonder what it would’ve been like to have a real mother instead of a lot of stepmothers. Katherine Champernowne taught my first education. I was taught many subjects and several languages that are very useful and helped me talk with foreign ambassadors. I had a close bond with Katherine she was like a mother to me. Later on my new stepmother Katherine Parr, hired me a private tutor named William Grindal. When he died of the plague Roger Ascham became my tutor. Not only did I excel in school but I played instruments, was a hunter, and an equestrian. I secretly aided the Dutch when they rebelled against Spanish tyranny. This caused Philip II to retaliate by helping Catholic conspire against Elizabeth. This undeclared war went on for years, until an English army came into the Netherlands of 1585. Katherine Parr became the Dowager Queen when henry died and I went to live with her, but left after rumors that suggested that Thomas Seymour (Katherine’s husband at the time) was cheating with me.

Gordy and Chris meet up together first and Chris shows the .45 pistol that he borrowed from his old man, who was probably too drunk to notice. But while holding Gordy asks if its loaded and Chris tells him it isnt. But when he pulls the trigger it fires. They take off from behind the building where they were. They go to meet the other two guys and set off on their journey.
When I first read some of Miss Porter’s work, I came away feeling depressed, empty and wondering why she even wrote. Her stories seemed unfinished, incomplete and pointless. However, I find myself thinking about those works, discovering new things and realizing a deeper meaning in the stories.
