Activism involves efforts to express social, economic, environmental, political modifications with the desire to improve or change our society. Activists formed variety of organizations with people who have the same thoughts against the society in order to make changes. Among different types of activist groups, this essay will discuss about the major activist groups that work to implement human rights are Amnesty International (AI) and National Association of Colored People (NAACP). Both of these are organizations bring a lawsuit and have similar organizational structure, however AI focuses on releasing prisoners who are imprisoned from expressing opinion without violence, conversely, NAACP focuses on eliminating racial discrimination. NAACP and AI suggest analogous organizational structure. The organization of NAACP is supervised by a board of directors and includes, President and the CEO of the group, staff of the national offices, school chapters, area conferences, prison branches and units. Each unit has different president, vice president and secretaries. The National Board of Directors consists of leaders that were elected from candidates chosen by the NAACP Nominating Committee and it has authority to institute “committees, departments, bureaus, branches, and college chapters” (NAACP). NAACP is opening to all people, and mostly the leaders are whites. Similarly, AI is divided in to groups and has different functions for each. This organization is a volunteer organization to protect human rights around the world. The Amnesty International has created sections in the different countries and coordinated volunteers. Each section submits an annual fee to the secretariat and work hard to support visions and values of the organization. Also, the organizational structure of Amnesty International comprises of the International Council, International Secretariat, and International Executive Committee. The International Council is primary authority and every year delegates and representatives from sections are requested to attend. Through the process, these organizations try to help people who treated illegally with discrimination. For instance, Amnesty International filed a lawsuit to confirm detainees were treated humanely according to the international law. “US use of arbitrary detention and heavy shackling has violated the basic rights of prisoners jailed in the aftermath of 11 September”, Amnesty International said (BBC news). The organization states that many non-US nationals imprisoned since the terrorist attacks, and they were detained in extreme conditions. Many people had been seized during sweeps because of terrorism suspicion, despite being held only for routine visa violations. “The government’s treatment of these individuals is simply unacceptable and is a violation of international law,” Amnesty International Executive Director William Schulz said (BBC news). 36 prisoners were seized for several months without charges and they were Muslim men of Middle Eastern countries. The Justice Department said, “last month that 327 people were in detention for the immigration violations because they were being investigated for possible terrorist connections” (BBC news). Amnesty International have brought suit looking for the revelation of specified evidence on those imprisoners and released individuals.
