Friends from the other side, amigos del otro lado in spanish, is an illustrated book written by Gloria Anzaldúa and illustrated by Consuelo Méndez, the book was published by Children’s Book Press a branch of Lee and Low Books in 1993. I obtained this books at the McAllen Public Library on November 18. The book follows Prietita a young Mexican-American girl from South Texas who befriends a Mexican boy named Joaquin, he crossed the border with his mom because of the situation of their country, a friendship develops between them and show us how Pritetita is free of prejudices and full of compassion. 2 The illustrator of this book was Consuelo Méndez, a Venezuelan painter and graphic artist whose work is widely exhibited in Latin American. Her illustration perfectly portrays the story of Prietita and Joaquin, each scene of the book is represented in the illustration to the point that you could only admire the illustration and still understand the story without the text, Méndez went to South Texas in order to capture the home …show more content…
life of those in the border, thus making the illustration accurate and more personal. She chose to illustrate this book in watercolors, graphite, colored pencils, and collage. I admire that she combined several methods of illustration and yet there is no a disconnection between the illustration, it works perfectly. Although, since it’s a children’s book I would have prefer a more colorful approach, but I think the most important part of the illustration it’s that it portrays Mexican-American children and shows subtle illustration of a typical Mexican house, like the images of la virgen de Guadalupe or the herbs at the curandera’s home. 3 The book has several illustration where it perfectly portrays the story, but one of my favorites is Prietita and Joaquin first meeting, one of the points of having illustration in a children’s book is to help them represent the story more easily than by just using imagination, Méndez’s illustration brings to life the setting for me, while Anzaldúa explain the actions and gives the character the dialogues, the illustrator portrays the clothes, the character’s feature, and the place without it being in the text, however it does not feel out of place, but more like a complement. The other one is the illustration of Joaquin’s home, like I mentioned before I love the details that Méndez’s chose for his house, all the little details are easily recognized by anyone that is Mexican or has Mexican relatives, I can easily see a similar decoration in the houses of the people I know. 4 The main subject is Mexican-American fiction, since Prietita, our main character is shaped from that upbringing, in the same vain the book is Texas fiction since her life at South Texas is another important part of her life, in the book she says, “I grew up in South Texas, close to the Rio Grande river which is the Mexican-U.
S border.” Immigration is also part of the story, although is not discussed in depth is a big part of Joaquin’s story and the reason of his mistreatment from other, like the scene where Prietita’s cousins throw rocks at him because he was a mojado. The most important subject of the book is friendship, the friendship between Prietita and Joaquin is the heart of the story, everything else is pretty much in the background, what make it more special was the honesty between them since it other stories the characters will not share something because they are embarrassed, Joaquin is very open and honest with
Prietita. 5 I think the book main them is love and companionship, for me not all love has to be romantic, I think the relationship between the kids is a pure friendship, full of understanding and free of judgements. During all the book we follow Pritetita and Joaquin’s relationship, while her cousins call Joaquin mojado, she simply wonders if he is an immigrant without reproach, she just wonders, he was terrified with her cousins and he did not confirmed or denied what they were saying, but with Prietita he was honest, their bond was again proved when the border patrol went to their community looking for illegal immigrants, and Prietita did all in her powers to help him, in addition to learning how to use herbs to cure his boils without him asking, Prietita notice them and wanted to help him without expecting nothing in return. 6 I personally enjoyed really the book and I really liked Prietita and the little part of her personality that I got to read, she stood up for what was right even if it means being against her own cousins, she did not let herself be intimidate. One of the things I have noticed in all the bilingual books I have read is the slight differences on the Spanish they use and the one I know, for example, the translation is often really formal, using the word usted when they are children talking to each other and sometimes the books are translated way too literally. I would definitely recommend this book for young readers, it does not matter if they are Mexican-American or not since for me it’s always a good thing to be able to learn about other cultures.
In today's world there is kids in child labor and many people struggling with poverty. It is important that Francisco Jimenez tells a story of migrant farm workers because many people don't understand the struggles the workers go throw.This is relevant to our lives because people who aren't struggling with poverty or are in child labor take most things for granted and those who struggle would be more than grateful for the most slightest
In both the movie, La Misma Luna, and the newspaper series, Enrique’s Journey, migrants are faced with many issues. The most deadly and scarring issues all relate back to bandits, judicial police, and la migra or Mexican immigration officers. The problems that arise are serious to the point of rape, robbing, and beating. It is not easy crossing the border illegally and secretly, but the successful ones have an interesting or even traumatic story about how it worked for them.
The third chapter is quite a different spin from what I read in the previous chapters from author's Gloria. E. Anzaldua's book entitled Light In The Dark/Luz En Lo Oscuro. Chapter three is quite interesting. In this particular chapter on page 48, she reveals her identity as a jotitita (queer Chicana). Anzaldua goes to further states that this "mexicatjena-to enter a museum and look at indigenous objects that were once used by my ancestors"(48 Anzaldua). What is interesting to me is the she ponders on whether or not she finds her historical Indian identity at the museum. In addition, she also questions whether her identity could be found along the ancient artifacts and their as she puts it their mestizaje. I really
Meaning, this book would be perfect to teach students life lessons that are important. Three of the themes that are good life lessons are: family, perseverance and survival, and humanization and dehumanization. All of these are found throughout the whole book which makes them hard to forget. Family is shown throughout the book because when Enrique’s mom leaves, all Enrique wants to do is to be with her. A short summary from Litcharts.com explains why family is such a big theme throughout the whole book. “Enrique’s Journey, as its title indicates, is the non-fiction story of a 17-year-old boy’s struggle to travel across Mexico to the United States to reunite with his mother. The events depicted in the book are set in motion by an initial instance of abandonment: Lourdes’ difficult decision to leave Enrique and his sister Belky in Honduras, while she seeks work in the United States to send money back to her family.” This whole quote shows, even though it was a hard choice for Lourdes, it was the right one because it was to help her family. Another theme that was found in the book that is a good lesson is about perseverance and survival. Survival is a trait everyone has, but this book highlights its importance, especially on the trains. Litcharts.com says, “He gives himself a time limit that shows his perseverance and the gravity of his decision: he will make it to his mother even if it takes a year. Despite the dangerous circumstances jumping trains, facing corrupt policemen, immigration checkpoints and officers, bandits, and gangsters, Enrique persists.” This teaches the readers that it is important to push through every difficulty no matter what, and that it is highly significant to survive to achieve the goal. Enrique’s Journey is a book that I would never read for fun. It is completely different from most of the books I have read, and intrigued me because the story was about a boy. Most of the books I have read in school are about a girl who goes through many hardships, and difficulties but I felt I could relate more to this one because it is about a boy who struggles. While I may not have been left thousands of miles away by mother so she could send money back, it was great to see what life was like on the other side. In this paper I will be talking about the micro and macro cultures of Enrique’s town Tegucigalpa. The situation and context of the characters decision making and how they adapted.

Symbolism is the key to understanding Sandra Cisneros’ novel, “The House on Mango Street”. By unraveling the symbolism, the reader truly exposes the role of not only Latina women but women of any background. Esperanza, a girl from a Mexican background living in Chicago, writes down what she witnesses while growing up. As a result of her sheltered upbringing, Esperanza hardly comprehends the actions that take place around her, but what she did understand she wrote in her journal. Cisneros used this technique of the point of view of a child, to her advantage by giving the readers enough information of what is taking place on Mango Street so that they can gather the pieces of the puzzle a get the big picture.

At a young age Luis Rodriguez started writing about his life story which becomes a big feat for him because of not getting education in school, gang related problems, and being a leader in school for his fellow classmates. He clearly goes against a stereotype he faces which is Hispanics are illiterate by, writing a book despite getting without help in his circumstances and writing becoming very popular throughout the years. As a result of his hard work he put into his stories and poems, thanks to one of his teachers Mrs. Baez, the stories and poems were edited and sent to many literary contests.
Enrique and many other Central American kids have a hard life. They come to America where they think their mothers will magically solve their problems because their mothers are supposed to be perfect. Enrique and others realize this isn’t true and goes on to accept it. Migrants resent their mothers a little bit, but come to start loving them as the migrants did before their mothers left. Migrants also learn about life lessons on the trains. Migrants learn that people should not be trusted, but not all people are bad. The migrants just have to learn which people are bad and which aren’t. Migrants also learned that you shouldn’t have high expectations of everything and also that you shouldn’t put your problems on one person and expect them to go away. You have to figure life out on your own.
This novel is a story of a Chicano family. Sofi, her husband Domingo together with their four daughters – Esperanza, Fe, Caridad, and Loca live in the little town of Tome, New Mexico. The story focuses on the struggles of Sofi, the death of her daughters and the problems of their town. Sofi endures all the hardships and problems that come her way. Her marriage is deteriorating; her daughters are dying one by one. But, she endures it all and comes out stronger and more enlightened than ever. Sofi is a woman that never gives up no matter how poorly life treats her. The author- Ana Castillo mixes religion, super natural occurrences, sex, laughter and heartbreak in this novel. The novel is tragic, with no happy ending but at the same time funny and inspiring. It is full of the victory of the human spirit. The names of Sofi’s first three daughters denote the three major Christian ideals (Hope, Faith and Charity).
In this book, the lives of two wealthy American citizens and two illegal immigrants collide. Delaney and Kyra were whites living in a pleasurable home, with the constant worry that Mexicans would disturb their peaceful, gated community. Candido and America, on the other hand, came to America to seek job opportunities and a home but ended up camping in a canyon, struggling even for the cheapest form of life. They were prevented from any kind of opportunities because they were Mexicans. The differences between the skin colors of these two couples created the huge gap between the two races.
Each part contains short stories within them. These all consist of a heartwarming girl, Esperanza,who matures into a woman and how she faces these gender roles through love and violence. Cisneros alters the name Esperanza with Chayo, Rachel, Lupe, Ines, and Clemenica, to explain differences between them along with to give the story more lewd effectiveness. Sandra Cisnero's main focus throughout the novel was identity. Cisneros starts off in the first section (“My Lucy Friend Who Smells Like Corn), narrating as a young child and further matures into the final section (There was a Man, There was a Woman)....
The struggle to find a place inside an un-welcoming America has forced the Latino to recreate one. The Latino feels out of place, torn from the womb inside of America's reality because she would rather use it than know it (Paz 226-227). In response, the Mexican women planted the seeds of home inside the corral*. These tended and potted plants became her burrow of solace and place of acceptance. In the comfort of the suns slices and underneath the orange scents, the women were free. Still the questions pounded in the rhythm of street side whispers. The outside stare thundered in pulses, you are different it said. Instead of listening she tried to instill within her children the pride of language, song, and culture. Her roots weave soul into the stubborn soil and strength grew with each blossom of the fig tree (Goldsmith).
The emotional letter that Juan left for his mother might be one of the most emotional scenes in the documentary. The pure emotions that the letter was written by Juan to her mother leaves the audience with the bonds and emotions felt between the kids and families. Juan Carlos’s father abandoned the family years ago and left to New York, consequently Juan believe it is his responsibility to provide for his family. He also wants to find his father in New York and confronts him about why he has forgotten about them. The story of Juan is not just about migration of children, but also the issue of family separation. The documentary does not dehumanize but rather bring the humane and sensitive lens to the story of Juan where the human drama that these young immigrants and their families live. Juan Carlos is not the first of Esmeralda’s sons to leave for the United states, his nine-year-old brother Francisco was smuggled into California one month earlier. Francisco now lives with Gloria, his grandmother, who paid a smuggler $3,500 to bring him to Los Angeles, California. Once Juan Carlos is in the shelter for child migrants his mother eagerly awaits him outside. After she sees him she signs a paper that says if Juan Carlos tries to travel again, he will be sent to a foster home.
