Amgen Inc Mission Statement Analysis

Written Assignment Unit 2 – Amgen Inc – Analyzing the About Us and comparing to the mission statement
I choosed the biotechnology company “Amgen Inc” which mission statement if the following: “Amgen strives to serve patients by transforming the promise of science and biotechnology into therapies that have the power to restore health or even save lives. In everything we do, we aim to fulfill our mission to serve patients”
By checking the „About Us“ section of their website (http://www.amgen.com/about/ and several sub-categories) I came to the following conclusion:
Even though biotechnology is a widely discussed and controversial topic – both in a personal and social manner – I experienced the mission statement of Amgen Inc. as very credible.

They give a good overview about their history and how they made it to the point there they currently are – one of the biggest biotechnology companies in the world. Most of their arguments are based on science and facts and not “just” spirituality or belief, which makes it very authentic for me.
Furthermore, with regard to their history, they can prove that they already released a number of new treatments to cure a number of – until then incurable – diseases. They openly admit about the ethical controversy about their products and provide good examples to prove that they also care about the social responsibility they have. For example they publish a number of guidelines and policies about corporate
governance, business and research ethics, work environment and both privacy and transparency.
They do not conceal that they are a company with numerous stakeholders and a massive earnings from their products. But they give good reason to believe how costly their research and quality assurance is. Furthermore, but providing numerous awards, they prove that they care about the environment and their employees and give a substantial amount of their earnings to philanthropy.
Overall I come to the conclusion that the company’s website both reflects and supports their mission statement very well. Based on the information of the website the statement is a quite fair presentation of the company’s mission and values.
