Insect Collection Tanner Jones Honors Biology 1st period Page 1 American Oil Beetle The American Oil Beetle is a type of Blister Beetle. These beetles are referred to as oil beetles. They are called this because they release oily droplets of hemolymph when they feel threatened. When the beetle feels threatened or put under pressure, they will release a chemical called cantharidin, which creates blisters and will irritate the human skin. These beetles have a soft, and stout abdomen with a shell that looks like overlapping plates. The beetle has a slightly bumpy surface. The antennae can be seen on its head. The beetle can be appeared as dull black, or can be even seen as shiny black or dark blue. The American Oil Beetle do not fly,
they are slow movers. The American Oil Beetle larvae are devious or deceitful. These beetles sit on flowers waiting for bees to land. They lock on a bee and have a free ride to the bees hive. Once the beetles are there, the larvae feeds on the bee larvae. These beetles are more active when spring hits and are active all year. The American Oil Beetle size and length is 7mm to 17mm. The colors of the beetle are black, and blue. The American Oil Beetle scientific name is Meloe americanus.

Bess beetles range in size all the way from 21 millimeters to 80 millimeters. The beetles are named after the French word baiser, which means “to kiss”, due to the fact that they often make a smooching sound with their legs. They have a small horn that protrudes from their head, and use their antennae to drive them forward when experiencing new smells. Though the beetles may look quite menacing, they are surprisingly docile. They enjoy feasting on rotten wood, moss, and adult beetle fecal matter after it has been partially digested by bacteria. A scientific experiment was conducted to test these beetle’s pulling power in relation to their mass. The hypothesis stated,
It’s not the latest comic book super villain that we’re worried about, here in Northwest Ohio. No, it’s a little green beetle that, since 2003, has been munching its way through our neighborhoods and Metroparks. The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) feasts on our Ash trees, leaving us little choice but to spray a bright red stripe or “X” on the trunks of the mortally wounded flora.
In the movie Beetlejuice, the theme is that the afterlife is not really the end for us all; we live on a multiple level world between life and death, and need to respect the dead. The theme is idealistic and not applicable in real life to all people. Throughout the movie, Burton reveals his take on the living and life after death and the delicate interaction between the two. The character Otho, played by Glenn Shadix is key to Burton’s interpretation and scrutiny of the afterlife. Throughout the film Otho makes comments about the dead and even goes as far to steal The Handbook for the Recently Deceased. Otho comments on those who commit suicide and how they become civil servant s in the afterlife. Barbra and Adam Maitland, played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are used as guides for the audience into the process of the afterlife and give a unique Ghost’s perspective on the process.
Venus flytrap is a carnivorous plant native in bogs and swamp lands in North and South Carolina. It was discovered in the 1700s and named after the Greek goddess Dione which gave it the scientific name Dionaea. The species name muscipula came from the Latin word “Mus” (mouse) and “Cipula” (trap). Venus flytrap is one of the only two known species of plants that use fast-closing, double-spaced trap mechanism to capture insects.
Kissing bugs are also known as triatomine bugs. These bugs defecate on the person later they bite and ingest blood. If trypanosome cruzi parasites in the bug feces enter the body through mucous membranes or breaks in the skin, that person can get infected. An unexpected sleeping person may accidentally scratch or rub the feces into the bite wound, eyes, or mouth. Kissing bugs are nocturnal, blood-feeding insects that are members of the Reduviidae family of insects.

The jewel toned Emerald Ash Borer in Newark may look pretty, but it has carved a path of destruction as it spread across the country. Despite long term efforts by local agencies to prevent further spread, this invasive insect was recently spotted in the local area. Here is a short history and the life cycle of this non-native pest.
The urban legend of the West Virginia Mothman persists to this day. Some say the Mothman appears in times of impending dangers. Others say the legend causes disasters. So, what is the legend of the West Virginia Mothman?
The resurgence of bedbugs in major U.S cities is a testament of the increase in international travel and increase sale of second-hand furniture which highlights the progress we have made in moving from one place to another and expanding our horizons for commercial benefits. Perhaps with or without realization we have become the vehicles in which bedbugs travel and the vessel of their

Have you ever wondered if there was a bat that gives your hand more comfort to get a good hit? Well, with an Axe Bat you can have a good grip, and a good hit. Its design means that it's more efficient and safe for people to use. So, if you can get a comfortable grip on a bat, then it's going to give you more control. Hugh Tompkins believes the bat's design could help players boost their performance and reduce the risk of common hand injuries.
The Bt spores then leak from the gut and germinate in the insect, causing death within a few days.
The synopsis of this classic 1975 horror film consists of an earthquake that causes these bugs to emerge and wreak chaos in this little town on the Californian fault. These bugs have the capability to generate a spark with their rear end that is powerful enough to burn human flesh and cause a fire. Eventually it is discovered by Professor Partimer, the protagonist, that the bugs are dying due to the fact that the difference in pressure is killing them (since they did emerge from underground). After a quick assessment of the bug in his lab, its is deduced that the insect shows all the attributes of a cockroach. The roaches are heavily armored giving them a prehistoric appearance similar to that of an trilobite.
This species is a very important species in the nutrient cycling of ecosystems and plays and important role in structuring the soil. They primarily feed on the dung of animals and possess the ability to remove dung by burying it in the ground. The generally prefer the dung of herbivores but will also collect the dung from omnivores. There are three groups of dung beetles all which have different ways of handling, using or disposing the dung of animals. The rollers will generally roll dung into balls which can be used as a food source or will be used as brooding cavities. The tunnelers will simply put the dung inside of the ground where they find it. The dwellers will use the dung as a place of where they can live in. These beetles have a well-developed sense of smell and can easily find or track the dung of animals. A dung beetles lifespan varies depending on various factors such as predation. It is expected that dung beetles can live till the age of 5 years, but is generally between 3 and 5 years. The main predator of this species is insect-eating animals such as reptiles and birds.
