The subversive importance of impressionists’ arts has been discussed in various art analyses by many scholars. Ralph Blakelock, one of the most prominent impressionists, was born in New York on 1847. Having undergone formal education, Blakelock taught himself artistry, with more interest in landscape views. He, particularly, concentrated on the selective landscape views that he encountered in his journeys across America and India. One of his most sought after painting is Moonlight. The painting depicts a sense of wilderness and solitude, with a sense of solitary lifestyle in nature. With those familiar with his background, it is said that Blakelock’s painting depicted his harsh and exclusionary American society. He was not happy with the way Native Americans were being displaced during wars in America. In other words, he resorted to protest with his candid paintings, rather than be in the battlefield. It is accepted across the board that Blakelock’s Moonlight, just like many of his artworks, was highly personal in technical terms. His individualistic approach to nature endeared him to many, with more aspects of space depth being illustrated by his lighting technique. Blakelock tactically uses light to create space, hence the illuminating effects of the Moonlight. His love for wilderness is clearly indicated by the use of deep colored aspects of the dark tree leaves, cemented with disappearing valley at the background. Moonlight is a typical example Blakelock’s moods, personality and general feelings expressed in painting. This exhibition will examine the changing role of Classical imagery from seventeenth through nineteenth century painting, as well explain how these changes gradually produced Realism. In the seventeenth century Nicholas Poussin and Peter Paul Rubens produced works that corresponded with the Classicism of the French Academie des Beaux-Arts, though they presented these ancient subjects in very different ways. The predominance of drawing and planning in Poussin’s work was seen in contrast with the dynamic use of colour in the works of Rubens. These two means of addressing Classical themes ideologically divided the Academie between the rubenistes and the poussinistes, who quarreled for over a century about artistic approaches and techniques. The innovative and expressive works produced in the eighteenth century and beyond can be seen as a product of the rubenistes’ triumph in this conflict. Following in the example of Rubens, British artist Joshua Reynolds made use of colour and dynamic compositional techniques that combined the portraiture popular in England with the Grand Manner style that gained favour in the Academie. Reynolds became the first president of the Royal Academy in Britain and gained international acclaim for his work. The achievement of such an honour fared more difficult for artists such as Eugène Delacroix, who took a bolder approach to combining Classical imagery with reality and was frequently rejected by the Academie for doing so. This was also the case for Edourad Manet, whose scandalous work shocked viewers of the Salon des Refusés with its perceived immorality and distasteful appropriation of Classical imagery.

As she used every stroke of darkness painted into the canvas an opportunity to have it symbolize this darkness and evil that resides in the world. Similarly Van Gogh had used every stroke of light painted into the canvas to be a symbol of beauty, and a symbol of his fascination of the night sky and its illuminating lights. He uses swift movements of his brush to depict a sky that seem to be able to sweep the mind away from the frustrations of this world in to the dreamy night light. Before Impressionism came to be a major movement (around 1870-1800s), Neoclassical and Romanticism were still making their impacts. Remembering last week’s lesson, we know that both those styles were different in the fact that one was based on emotion, while the other was practical and serious. However, one thing they both shared was the fact that the artists were trying to get a message across; mostly having to do with the effects of the French Revolution, and/or being ordered to do so. With Impressionism, there is a clear difference from its predecessors.
In this paper, we will focus on examining Vincent’s painting, Starry Night. The paper will begin with a short introduction about Vincent where an analysis will be conducted to explore more into the painting. Subsequently, the paper will move on to explain how Starry Night impacted the wider histories of art and the period where it was created. Lastly, The paper will further examine two accounts or interpretations of Starry Night from art historians.
The first photos of the gothic transition come from the “Prairie Images of Ground and Sky” collection. The collection shows untouched nature that gives a feeling of the sublime. It shows wide green expanses, bathed in warm light, that shows a raw beauty and goodness created by nature. This feeling of the sublime is a major aspect of the gothic due to its ability to provide contrast with the often dark plots. This aspect also gives the reader a sense of wonderment that causes a confrontation and reevaluation about the power of nature versus the characters and other elements of the novel. The photos from “Prairie Images of Ground and Sky” collection instill the sublime in the viewer but lack the evil component often in gothic novels because the landscapes are pristine. These open expanses represent the unknown, but not in a traditional gothic manner that would cause worry for the possibility of something treacherous hidden in the landscape. Instead, they are lacking of any sign of human activity and utilize soft lighting associated with virtue and goodness. This collection shows the distant and sublime before contact with other gothic themes that cause a darker scene to unfold.

In the mid 1800’s realism was developed as a style of painting to replicate the world as it was seen in a traditional artistic style. This allowed for a new style of art to be created that was based of a real moment or scene but to forget the traditional artistic laws such as distinct lines and forms. Approaching art from this impressionistic view Monet’s painted “Impression, Sunrise” bringing to life a natural scene of a hazy harbor using quick, short brush strokes and defining uses of color and natural light. Van Gough’s “Starry Night” uses similar impressionistic styles to paint a natural scene using vibrant contrasting colors, yet he embellishes the scene to create art that in not merely a landscape but a piece of self expression and shifted

Impressionism is the name given to the art movement that changed art forever. Starting in France in the 1860's, Impressionism was considered a radical break from tradition.1 Through the work of artists including Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre Renoir, Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas impressionism was born. Impressionists painted outside and focused greatly on light and its reflection. They painted quickly on primed white canvas with short visible brushstrokes and placed separate colours side by side letting the viewer’s eyes mix them. (Techniques uncommon to art at this time) Regarding their subject they again broke with tradition and painted anything they wanted including the modernity of Paris and the everyday life of its citizens. This new found freedom regarding subject along with unconventional techniques greatly displeased the L’École des Beaux-Arts where academic artists would have worked on subjects such as history, royalty and mythology.2 In contrast to the impressionists their work had a smooth varnished finish, showing little to no evidence of the artist’s presence. Having introduced Impressionism, I aim to in this essay analyse why the city of Paris is at the heart of the impressionist movement. Firstly by looking at how Paris helped create the impressionist movement and secondly how Paris fuelled it.

But most importantly, old ideas rapidly became obsolete which created an entirely new artistic world highlighted by such extraordinary talents as Vincent Van Gogh, Eugene Delacroix, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Claude Monet. Vincent Van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter, and highly influenced the 20th century art. In the era of the impressionism, Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter whose work, notable for its beauty, emotion and color. One of his most famous paintings that caught my attention was the starring night over the Rhone and the café Terrace on the place du forum, Arles, at night. The reasons why the two paintings from Van Gogh caught my attention was that it has a lot of meaning and representation.
